Once upon a time, there were two rivals -- a pitcher and a catcher. One day, the pitcher's team acquired the catcher, and the pair flourished.
The catcher worked closely with the pitcher:
C.J. Wilson wears T-shirt in honor of Napoli
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Before speaking with reporters following the Rangers' 4-0 win on Monday, starter C.J. Wilson looked down at his blue T-shirt and laughed.
"It's tough to keep a straight face on while I'm wearing this," said Wilson, who had clubhouse manager Hoggy Price help him with the design and getting the shirts ordered. The players got them on Monday.
The shirt had a picture of Mike Napoli wearing a chef's hat and holding a spatula with the words: "On the Menu" beside his smiling face. On the back of the shirt, it read: "Turkey Sandwich."
On why Napoli has been able so successful catching the Rangers’ staff:
One of the things that is such a strength for him is that he hit against all of us, more or less. I think one of the reasons he catches me well is because I’ve been pitching against him for five or six years. I’ve been facing him since ’05 in the minor leagues, so he knows exactly what it’s like to hit off me, and he tries to keep me at my best.
And then one day, the pitcher left ... and after a comment here and an ill-advised tweet there, things went to hell in a handbasket:
Wilson had no further comment on the [Twitter incident], but when he was talking about working with a new set of Angels catchers, he named each of the six Texas Rangers catchers he had worked with over the previous few years, omitting one.
When a reporter suggested it was Napoli, he replied, “Oh yeah, Napoli.”
I'm not sure why you'd attempt to downplay the controversy stemming from an ill-advised tweet and try your hardest to kill the story off (to the extent that he gave Rich Gosselin a "next question" response when he queried him on it yesterday), and then consciously give the story new life by snubbing your former batterymate. If I didn't know any better, I'd say that was even more deserving of criticism than the tweet that triggered this entire thing, but what do I know?
