Terrifying Statistic Of The Day
Since the 2000 season, 79 major league teams have had offenses which posted 800 runs or more in a single season. Of those 79 teams, exactly two have have posted team walks-to-strikeouts ratios of lower than 0.44 -- Texas in 2007 (0.411, 816 runs) and Detroit in 2006 (0.380, 822 runs), with the implication being that it's extremely difficult to have a potent offense AND have a poor ratio of walks to strikeouts.
As of this afternoon, the 2009 Rangers are on pace to score approximately 789 runs. Their team walks-to-strikeouts ratio is 0.364. The historical precedent obviously does not portend well for this team's chances to score 800 runs if a radical change in this team's hitting approach or an offensive acquisition in the vein of Nick Johnson is not immediately forthcoming, and if this team can't score 800 runs, it's going to be very hard-pressed to win 85-86 games (the team's current Pythagorean pace), much less the AL West.
