Rangers Defensive Barometer: June 22nd Edition

Interesting, albeit meaningless observation: The Rangers seem to be moving laterally as of late in terms of Ultimate Zone Rating (+18.3 runs) and plus/minus (+36 plays), although that's easily ascribable to the small sample sizes involved over that short time span and the consequential lack of predictive value, and Texas firmly remains among baseball's best defensive teams in terms of converting batted balls into outs ... in any event, here is the latest player breakdown:

1B: Chris Davis (+1.4 UZR, +2 +/-)
2B: Ian Kinsler (+6.0 UZR, +11 +/-)
3B: Michael Young (-9.8 UZR, -14 +/-)
SS: Elvis Andrus (+6.4 UZR, +8 +/-), Omar Vizquel (+2.1 UZR, +2 +/-)
LF: Marlon Byrd (-1.0 UZR, +2 +/-), Andruw Jones (+0.8 UZR, +2 +/-), David Murphy (-1.3 UZR, -1 +/-)
CF: Marlon Byrd (-3.2 UZR, +3 +/-), Josh Hamilton (+5.8 UZR, +2 +/-)
RF: Nelson Cruz (+11.6 UZR, +5 +/-)

All numbers are in runs above or below average for that position. Some miscellaneous thoughts (with the standard small sample size disclaimer included):

  • Neither UZR nor plus/minus quantifies the value of Davis's superior stretch at first base (which has clearly saved a few hits on bang-bang plays this year relative to what the league-average defensive first baseman would be capable of), but the numbers indicate that his stellar early-season defense is beginning to erode. Is the horrendous offense beginning to affect other aspects of his game? Again, we're working off less than a half-season's worth of defensive data here, but the trend is ruffling.
  • Kinsler/Andrus is still a dynamite double-play combination both visually and statistically. Young is beginning to stabilize a bit -- digging a bit deeper, you find that Young is two plays below average on balls hit to his right, six plays below average on balls hit to his left and a whopping 11 plays below average on balls hit straight-on. Boston's Mike Lowell is threatening to claim the title of "worst defensive third baseman in baseball," registering at -8.0 UZR and -14 +/-, which is pretty startling in light of the fact that he had been a steadily above-average defensive third baseman since arriving in Boston.
  • No, the metrics still can't agree on Byrd's defensive aptitude.

Joey, I assume you will be doing this on a monthly basis. It woul dbe nice if you could include the previous months data. Thanks.

Actually, the plan is to do an update once a week, coinciding with the every-Sunday update of UZR. Plus/minus is updated daily, as far as I know.

Here are the other two I have done: May 8th and June 17th.
