Sunday Morning Open Thread: Five Questions

Justin Smoak follows through on a spring training homer. - Photo courtesy of Scott Lucas1. With Justin Smoak now looming within even closer proximity to the majors, Chris Davis continuing to struggle with the bat and the enigmatic Hank Blalock attempting to rekindle his offensive value, should Texas opt to make a major lineup change at first base during the All-Star break? If so, what should that change be?

2. Which player is your single biggest trade deadline target, and what would you be willing to relinquish to bring them to Texas? Assume all salary/positional implications, as well as the apparent payroll inelasticity.

3. What is your level of concern regarding the seemingly inevitable transfer of majority ownership of the Rangers from the possession of Tom Hicks?

4. Do any Rangers other than Ian Kinsler -- and arguably Kevin Millwood -- absolutely merit selection to the American League's All-Star squad?

5. In anticipation of the upcoming second annual mid-season iteration of the Baseball Time in Arlington Top 25 Prospect rankings, who, in your estimation, are the five best prospects in the Rangers' farm system right now?

Reader Comments (22)

I'd play Blalock more at 1st base. Davis obviously needs to work on his hitting, so I'd send him down (up) to Frisco to do that. Rotate the outfiielders into the DH spot.

I don't have any trade targets as of now, but I would only trade prospects at positions where the Rangers currently have good young players on the major league roster ahead of them. For instance, Joaquin Arias is an example. I would not trade Borbon, or any pitching.

Of the three major league owners in the Metroplex, Hicks is obviously the best. If I were him, I'd try to sell the Stars and the soccer team. If the Rangers must be sold, maybe Nolan Ryan can put together a group to buy the club. I think everyone would feel comfortable with Nolan as the managing partner.

Sorry, I don't think that Kinsler or Josh Hamilton merit selection to the All-Star game. Hamilton should thank the fans for their support, and bow out because of his stats and injury situation. I can't believe that the Rangers have the gall to push for Kinsler's selection considering his .260 average. Yes, Millwood is worthy of being selected, but there are probably several more starters with more wins.

The Rangers obviously have a very good farm system, but I'd rather read others' comments about the top prospects so that I can better educate myself.

Thanks for the questions!

1. Yeah, I would send Crush down and go with Hack at 1st. At least he's hot now

2. I fall into the lets go with who we got mode.

3. On a 1 - 10 scale I am about a 15. I am very concerned after all the years it took to get Hicks to see the light, now someone else's massive ego is going to foul up my beloved Rangers

4. I voted for Cruz. He is having an all star type season but I am not sure he is one of the 6 or 7 best outfielders. Frankie Frank - almost if not for injury and CJ except 8th inning setup guys dont go.

5. I'm not one of the prospect gurus but the usual Smoak, Feliz, etc group

1. No changes except maybe start Blalock a little more if he keeps up this recent display of power. Evan Grant had a good idea that Davis could be a defensive replacement after 6 innings while he continues to work daily with Rudy on his swing. I don't think you bring up Smoak in the middle of a tight pennant race unless Davis gets hurt. Chris' fielding has been outstanding, and his ability to dig out marginal throws from Andrus is a key reason the Rangers defense has improved as much as it has.

2. I think the Rangers should stand pat unless they can afford to the cost of a true Ace for the top of the rotation. Their bullpen is fine now that FF is getting a little healthier. They could replace Eddie with any of several loogies in waiting in OKC. A big bat would mean an increase in payroll that just isn't going to happen right now. I think the offensive plus-up needs to come from within (i.e., Hambone, Cruz and Kins getting on a roll, and some others reducing their whiffs somewhat). NEXT YEAR is THE YEAR, unless a true Ace magically appears soon in Arlington that can win several October starts in a row.

3. Hard to say what's going to be the net result. If a new owner goes in a completely different direction, we could actually see a completely different management and staff in place starting off next yr. Money isn't the savior of the franchise, as Hicks proved during these past 10 yrs, so if a smart owner comes in and looks at the current organization as possessing the ingredients of a long stretch of title-contending teams, then I think they'll be happy to mostly "stay the course." At least we can all hope, anyway. We Ranger fans are all excited about the team right now!

4. Nobody in the current everyday lineup, including Kinsler, is probably standing out heads and shoulders above their peers. However, I would place MY, Elvis, and Cruz among the top 4 in the AL, and Kins is obviously no worse than in the top 3 2Bs in the league. Millwood would be on my team, if I had the choice to make. You could make a real good case for FF, CJ (surprising!), and O'Day (really suprising!!) being among the top 10 relievers in the AL, too, IMO. But they tend to pick starters and only a couple of closers who are among the current leaders in saves, so now one in that list has a real shot. 25 pretty good players have been much better in 2009 than 2008's 4 All-Stars and not much else.

5. It sounds like Smoak is the real deal and should be #1. Perez is looking like he's got the best parts of Holland and Feliz together in one talented package -- he's got to be no worse than #2. Feliz is #3 based purely on his fastball and his age -- but he needs to show he belongs this high on the list during the rest of the season. I'm not sure who should fill the last 2 slots, but maybe Borbon and Wieland should be there. I wouldn't know where to rank the two June high draft-picks, but it sure sounds like they're legit prospects. It's too bad Main, Beavan, Beltre, and MaxRam haven't had better seasons. Hopefully, they'll all rebound -- Beavan hasn't been horrible. I've been so happy to see Holland and Elvis graduate to the bigs...they are going to be key parts of any future championships the Rangers will win.

Top 5 Prospects

Smoak
Feliz
Martin Perez
Blake
Kasey

1. I think it's pretty clear Davis is not going to figure things out in the majors at this point. I'd send him down, and put Blalock at first while Smoak crushes some PCL pitching and hopefully improves his game against lefties a bit in preparation for a callup sometime after the trade deadline.

Blalock obviously has platoon issues to deal with, but that might be something we'll just have to live with for the time being.

2. I still wouldn't mind having Josh Willingham to provide some patience, a platoon partner for Hank and a right-handed DH to make Andruw Jones expendable. I'd be willing to give up somebody like Kiker for him, but not much else.

Really though, I don't see us making any big moves at the deadline this year. We probably won't even sell on somebody expendable like Blalock while we're in the thick of the hunt, and the Rangers probably don't want to expend the prospects it'll take to bring in a starting pitcher of any real worth. And please, please... no Wang.

3. In the long run I'm a bit concerned about getting a new owner who will come bumbling on in and bowl over all the dominoes this franchise has so carefully arranged, but right now I just want to see the top 2 draft picks signed.

4. Nelson Cruz is still 9th among all AL outfielders in WAR despite the recent slump he's been in. Aside from Kinsler, he's probably our most deserving player. Don't know if he really merits a selection on his own, but he'd be my second choice behind Kinsler.

Hamilton getting voted in is a freaking joke though. If Hamilton and Rollins both make this All-Star squad, it's going to be kind of sad.

5. Hmn...

1. Smoak
2. Feliz
3. Perez
4. Beavan
5. Wieland maybe?

July 5, 2009 at 10:05 AM | Registered CommenterJon Page

Davis needs to be at Frisco for do overs. Sending him out there day after day at the major league level is not helping anything. If he remains at first then let the pitchers hit or put Blalock there and get on with it. The hole created by Davis AND Salty at the bottom of the order is a killer.

Stand pat on trades. Hope Hunter is the real deal, Harrison can come back and harness his control and hope that Holland figures out that hitters at the MLB level get paid a lot of $$$ to hit fastballs and that some of them are pretty good at it.

Pray that we don't wind up with an owner who thinks he's a baseball guy.

Smoak
Feliz
Kirkman
Beaven
Perez
Wieland
Smith
And one or two others..hard to stop at 5 :-)
Thanks for asking....

Oh, and I'm not sure that Kinsler, who's beginning to dog it at the plate, deserves an All Star berth. Nellie Cruz would get my vote.

July 5, 2009 at 10:32 AM | Unregistered CommenterJohn

1. Platoon Blalock and Davis. If Hank is traded this month, work in Saltalamacchia at first, giving Teagarden more time to develop behind the plate.

2. Go for the best pitcher: Zach Geinke/Matt Cain/Roy Halladay. I would help KC build a solid ML team in 2010 for Greinke; the trade would include Jarod Saltalamacchia, David Murphy, Brandon McCarthy, Matt Harrison, and Kasey Kiker. The Rangers would not add salary in 2009 in this move.

3. Very low level of concern, especially when the new ownership commits to the Nolan Ryan-Jon Daniels talent development plan. George W Bush should buy the Rangers with prt of the money he stole from the US citizenry and become an absentee owner who occasionally shows up with a corn-ball smile and an idiotic one-liner..... he is good at that.

4. Millwood deserves to be an All-Star; Kinsler does not. Neither does Hamilton, btw.

5. Neftali Feliz, Justin Smoak, Julio Borbon, Tim Smith, and AJ Murray are the top prospects ready to contribute to the Rangers in the next year. I have seen all of them perform this year and am excited that their accomplishments will translate to MLB success.

1. Looks like Blalock is a butcher at first base, so I'd go ahead and get Smoak up here. I just think he's a hitter, and hitters hit regardless of where they are. His defense will be superlative.

2. Stand pat and hold on to the prospects unless someone gets silly with you and offers the world.

3. Would love to see Hicks go. Would also love to see Nolan own part of the team and influence the direction even more than now.

4. Ian doesn't deserve it but may eke in. Millwood should be picked.

5. Smoak, Feliz, Perez, and a bunch of others tied for 4th and 5th.

July 5, 2009 at 2:25 PM | Unregistered CommenterRockwall Tim

1. I think until Davis gets his head right down in the minors, Smoak is the only real option. His walk rate, power, and defense all translate well to the majors. I think it's time to throw him into the fire.

2. There really isn't anyone who I'd target this year. I'd prefer to stand pat and make a move or two next year. I'd like to get AJ Murray up here. It would cost us cutting Guardado.

3. I'm not really concerned. I think a new owner would be crazy to get rid of Nolan as the decision maker, and hopefully we would no longer be in financial handcuffs.

4. As far as I can tell, Michael Young is the only player on the team that's truly played like an all-star. However, if a setup guy could ever get consideration, I think CJ is deserving.

5. Martin Perez, Justin Smoak, Neftali Feliz, Blake Beavan, Mitch Moreland
