Sunday Morning Open Thread: Five Questions

Jerry Jones shows off his newly manicured nails to Tom Hicks on Monday, April 6th.1. Reflecting back upon Tom Hicks' soon-to-end reign as owner of the Texas Rangers, what would you consider to be his single greatest mistake and/or success?

2. Do you really care whom the Rangers hire as their new hitting instructor this coming week?

3. Obligatory gun-to-your-head hypothetical question: If payroll circumstances forced the Rangers to cut one of their five arbitration-eligible players (Scott Feldman, Brandon McCarthy, C.J. Wilson, Frank Francisco and Josh Hamilton), who would you prefer to see get the axe?

4. Baseball Prospectus's Kevin Goldstein on the Surprise Rafters' Mitch Moreland earlier this week: "His future might be as a left-handed bench bat who can fill in at three positions." Is Goldstein's appraisal of Moreland's upside too conservative or right on the mark?

5. Rank these Rangers alumni in the order that you would personally induct them into the Hall of Fame: Juan Gonzalez, Sammy Sosa, Kevin Brown and Kenny Lofton. Suspend reality temporarily and assume that, for all intents and purposes, voters no longer omit alleged PED users from their annual ballots.

[Yeah, this question is ostensibly strange, but I'm interested in seeing how the perceptions of their careers contrasts with reality. And yes, Bert Blyleven -- who is also a 1976-77 Rangers alumnus -- deserves induction before any of them, but that's neither here nor there.]

1. In a twisted logic sort of way, it could be argued that his biggest success and mistake are the same transaction, the A-Rod signing.

2. Not really, they had the best in the business so anyone else is just underwhelming at this point.

3. McCarthy, though I'm just as happy this is only hypothetical.

4. I see a Matt Stairs starter kit.

5. Juan Gonzales.

Sammy is a first ballot no brainer. 500 PLUS HR has always added up to first ballet. Bert is not in, because he is border line, like Tony Perez, Jim Rice and a lot of other guys. Jim got in, but look how long it took. Bert should be in, however to put hom ahead of Sammy can not be done. That is given your own rules (voters no longer omit alleged PED users from their annual ballots).

1. Biggest mistake was the Chan Ho Park ting, but was that really his FAULT? ARod signing right up there too - and that was his fault.

2. Yes I care. I"d be underwhelmed if it weren't Greer.

3. No gun needed; CJ Wilson.

4. That's hard to say. Look back at guys who killed in the minors and were underwhelming in the big leagues...a guy like Kevin Seitzer, for example.

5. Sosa, Gonzalez, Lofton and Brown (I suppose you meant K. Brown the pitcher and not K. Brown the OKC shuttle catcher. ;)

November 1, 2009 at 7:36 AM | Unregistered CommenterJim

1. 252 million, and still no pitching. It has to be A-ROD.

2. If some of Rusty Greer would rub off, that would be great. Work ethic and plate discipline.

3.The rangers do not have the guts. Josh Hamilton is a big risk. CHRACTER + INJURY does not add up to a big contract. Especialy for offensive player. He had one great first half. I would try to trade him first.

4. I have no idea.

5. Sammy,Kenny,Juan,Kevin

November 1, 2009 at 7:49 AM | Unregistered Commentercanada

1. The A-Rod deal, no question.
2. Not really but, sentimental choice would Thurman Clyde III.
3. If Texas could cut ties w/ McCarthy right now I'd be all for it. Might have more to do w/ the nausea that caused by seeing Danks toe the rubber in Chicago, than Mac's lack of "stuff". He's as frustrating to me as a younger "Benoit".
4. Not to sure about the kids ceiling, but he had better be able to roam the OF a bit, because AB's are going to be hard to come by @ 1B.( Davis/Smoak)
5. Give me Sammy, although I'm not certain that I've ever seen someones attitude wreck a dead-on 1st ballot HOF like Juando's.

November 1, 2009 at 8:01 AM | Unregistered CommenterBrandon Powell

1. Biggest mistake: signing Alex Rodriguez. Biggest success: naming JD as GM AND sticking with the long-term plan of talent development..... which is Hicks' own admission that the A-Rod and Chan-Ho signings were his biggest errors.

2. Hitting coach: Don't care.

3. I would trade McCarthy, Hamilton, Wilson, and Francisco for Greinke..... No gun needed. As far as a salary dump, McCarthy is certainly an awkward fit for the 2010 club......

4. Moreland should get a legit opportunity to start at first base...... for another ML club.

5. I cannot suspend any more reality. All of that potential has been exercised in rooting for a pennant-contending Rangers team since 1972.

1 - Tom Hicks' biggest mistake was the common human error of greed. He tried to win without the growing pains of building the franchise from the ground floor. It's just like the vast majority of fans. He wanted to "win now" while ignorant of the patience needed to develope the players and chemistry required. Maybe a partial reason for that was buying a playoff team. But most likely it was not having the right people surrounding his in advice.

2 - I will a year from now.

3 - McCarthy.

4 - I have no clue.

5 - Lofton - Sosa - Gonzalez - Brown.

1. Hicks biggest mistake was what he did to This Thing after the 2004 season. Instead of continuing to build around a very good young core of players that won 89 games and ride the momentum of a fan base where there were nearly 6000 more butts in seats per game than in 2003, he got greedy. A payroll with tremendous financial flexibility (we were at $ 55 million in 2004) remained stagnant yet Hicks had dramatic raises in tickets and parking. It didn't go over well with the fans or the players.

The best thing Hicks did was hire Nolan Ryan.

2. Hitting coach isn't going to matter if the GM doesn't give him good material.

3.McCarthy

4. Don't know enough about Moreland.

5. Sosa-Lofton-Juando-Brown

November 1, 2009 at 9:11 AM | Unregistered CommenterJosey Wales

1. How he spent on FAs.
2. Don't really care.
3. BMAc.
4. Maybe a starter on a poor team.
5. Sosa, Lofton, Gonzalez, Brown

November 1, 2009 at 9:53 AM | Unregistered CommenterRob M

1. Chan Ho Park, (but don't really know that it was forseeable). Success? Finally sticking with a plan form more than 2 years.
2. I don't care too much. I like Clint Hurdle, but honestly, I think anyone we hire is going to be a step down over Rudy.
3.McCarthy, but there is no way the Rangers will be forced to cut an arb eligibles. Payroll will be fine, and I'm thinking the ownership thing gets settled sooner than later, with the payroll actually getting bumped up a notch.
4. I guess we'll see one of these days.
5. Sosa, Lofton, Juan, Brown. But what about Palmeiro? I think he'd go in ahead of all but Sosa if we're excluding PED issues.

November 1, 2009 at 10:21 AM | Unregistered CommenterMike E

1. Park was pitching in LA, a pitcher's haven, and he had flyball tendencies - so they should have seen that coming. But I think ARod was a bigger mistake. And then what they got for ARod while having to keep paying a portion of his salary was a mistake, and what they got in exchange for what they got in exchange for ARod was a mistake (and still paying ARod's salary) - so the whole cause & effect string is one big cluster-you-know-what. In the end it was like ARod for Brad Wilkerson, to reduce all of it down to absurdity. LOL.

That's the only question I feel like answering. Happy November everyone.

November 1, 2009 at 10:29 AM | Unregistered CommenterJim

1. The A-Rod signing was not good because we traded him after 3 years.
2. Rusty Greer
3. McCarthy
4. He has a chance to be a bigleague regular.
5. Sosa, Lofton, Brown, Gonzalez

November 1, 2009 at 10:51 AM | Unregistered CommenterAaron Martinez

1. Single biggest mistake: Signing off on the A-Gon/Sledge/Young trade for Killian/Otsuka/Eaton.
Single greatest success: Committing to rebuilding in 2007

2. I hope the organization hires Clint Hurdle to be their new hitting coach.

3. B-Mac...and it's not even close.

4. Strictly based on statistics, which is all I've got to judge Moreland since I've never watched him play, I'd say he's being sold short. That guy has gotten better as he's progressed and those types of hitters usually aren't bad major leaguers. Plus, he's a k/bb=1 guy...that's huge. It wouldn't surprise me if he turned into a legitimate major league regular.

5. Sosa, Igor (my favorite Ranger player ever, btw), Lofton, and Brown.

November 1, 2009 at 12:24 PM | Unregistered CommenterRocky

1. Mistake: failing to have Doug Melvin rebuild through the farm.
Success: sticking with Jon Daniels through a farm rebuild.

November 1, 2009 at 1:16 PM | Unregistered Commentergcotharn

Correction. I misread question as Rangers hall of fame. Only Sosa gets in the actual Hall.

November 1, 2009 at 1:30 PM | Unregistered CommenterA. Stephens

1. ARod. That contract will be what both of them are remembered for.
2. As long as it is NOT Rusty Greer I don't really care. I love Rusty and one day he might be a a great hitting coach, but hiring a guy that has never been a hitting coach at any level probably shouldn't be your first choice.
3. BMac. I would love to hear an argument for anyone else.
4. Maybe. we'll see how he hits AAA pitching this year.
5. You can't not think about PED's when talking about these guys, but if you could Sosa, Gonzalez, Lofton, Brown

November 1, 2009 at 1:49 PM | Unregistered Commentertrenton_tx

1. Worst - Firing Doug Melvin as GM. Best - Firing John Hart as GM.

2. Should have hired the AAA hitting coach who fixed CD.

3. CJ. He is a LOOGY who thinks he is a closer.

4. No idea.

5. How about None of The Above.

November 1, 2009 at 3:26 PM | Unregistered CommenterTim Raub

1. Failure - improper management of team funds in first several years with a win now mentality that caused overspending and future unnecessary financial constraints.
Success - Sticking with a plan of building a team for the long term since 2007
2. Yes, but not sure who is the best choice, other than Rusty don't really know anything about any of the other candidates except what I have read lately and that isn't enough for me to judge them by.
3. McCarthy
4. Probably better to be conservative and happy if he does better later than expecting too much and being disappointed if he doesn't perform up to expectations. I would hope though from what I recall seeing in different articles, updates, etc. that he would be more than a utility man.
5. Sosa, Gonzo, Lofton, Brown.

November 1, 2009 at 3:41 PM | Unregistered CommenterRanger_Rick

1. Chan Ho Park
2. Doesn't really matter in my opinion, but there has to be quick chemistry with Wash.
3. No Brainer...Brandon McCarthy (Ceiling is there, but so are the endless injuries).
4. Possible
5. Sosa, Lofton, Gonzalez, Brown

November 1, 2009 at 4:33 PM | Unregistered CommenterWood1378

1. obviously Chan Ho Park was terrible, but you just cant top the A-Rod signing. as someone else said, $252 million and still no pitching. the Rangers gained nothing from A-Rod other than some naitonal exposure and maybe the selling of a few tee shirts. he dragged the team and former teammates through the mud by saying that "Texas" was the place of introduction and use of steroids.

2. i dont have any warm and fuzzies for Rusty Greer getting the job. i mean i love him and everything, but the last thing this young team needs is a hitting coach (or any coach for that matter) who's got zero experience in this manner.

3. well McCarthy but i'm more than willing to stay with him. he's still 25 right? fatty francisco needs to do some crunches and get a little tougher during the offseason or he's next on my list.

4. not really qualified to make a really legit comment, but we'll know precisely where he lies come about July.

5. Sosa, Lofton, Gonzo, Brown.
- seriously, why are they banning PED players if no one knows who actually did them? it's going to be based on gossip, he-said, she-said garbage.

November 1, 2009 at 9:48 PM | Unregistered Commenteroughttobe mcdowell

1. Probably A-Rod. But I personally regret that we let Pudge leave. He should have spent his whole career here.
2. It is important who the hitting coach is. I don't know who the best of the four mentioned is, but the Rangers need to hire the man who will really do the best job -- and that may not be the more glamorous or well-known guy.
5. Lofton is the only guy in that group that deserves hall-of-fame. Sorry, I can't suspend reality. Unless Sammy can clear up the steriods question ( I doubt he can), I don't want to mention HOF in the same breath with his name. Same with Juan.

1. The biggest mistake was signing Alex Rodriguez and then failing to invest in the rest of the team soon thereafter. The biggest success was Hicks committing to rebuilding and permitting Daniels to pull the trigger on the Teixeira trade.

2. No.

3. For real? Why would anyone not choose to cut McCarthy out of those choices? Wilson/Francisco are our 8th/9th inning relievers, Feldman is our best starter, and Hamilton will hopefully be our best hitter in 2010, again. McCarthy has shown to be a decent #4 or #5 starter who can't stay healthy. McCarthy's stuff also looks extremely mediocre; he simply lacks the stuff to be a top of the rotation starter. This team has plenty of starters who could take McCarthy's spot next year (Harrison, Feliz, Hurley, Nippert, Moscoso). The same can't be said for the other guys.

Nevertheless, if I was considering trading one of those guys, I would consider dealing Francisco and letting Feliz pitch out of the pen for 2010. I think the "closer" label has artificially increased Francisco's value and he might be able to net something solid in return.

4. His analysis is probably right on the mark, but of course as with any prospect, he still has the capability of being better. That is just his most likely trajectory.

5. Sammy Sosa, Kevin Brown, Juan Gonzlaez, Kenny Lofton.

I see that texaslifter is still living in his dream world.

November 2, 2009 at 2:02 PM | Unregistered Commentergeoknows

1. Chan Ho Park
2. I'm not all that concerned about it mainly because II really don't know enough about the canidates to say who I prefer. Greer would be interesting but his lack of experience has to be a huge concern. The rest I don't know much about and wonder if there are reasons why they aren't currently employed. Promotion from within seems to me to be the best option.
3. McCarthy... Not that I don't want him back... It's just the others have proven success while McCarthy hasn't proved he can be successful or healthy for that matter.
4. no idea
5. Sosa, Gonzalez, Lofton, Brown
