Quote Of The Week (1/17)

Hes looking for an opportunity to get back in the game. There are no promises, he has to perform. If he does do that, well be happy to have him here. If he doesnt, then well have to make a decision.

- Ron Washington on Sammy Sosa. He and the Rangers agreed in principle to a deal that would bring the former Ranger back to the team that brought him to the show way back in 1989. Jon Daniels and Sosas agent Adam Katz are now going to work out the details of the deal and a formal announcement should probably come out in the next few days.

As a transplanted Rangers fan in cold snowy Chicago, I'm curious what (if any) buzz about Sammy's return there is in Texas. I linked over here from MVN cousin The Cub Reporter, having adopted the Cubs as my NL home team when I moved to Chicago in 1995. It was fun to cheer along with Slammin' Sammy in the glory years of the late 90's and early 2000's, and also sad to see how he ended his Cubs tenure. I for one think he has been (rightfully) humbled and hope that he does well, helps the Rangers regain some offensive pop, and gets an opportunity to end his career more gracefully than it appeared he did last year. Anyone else wanna chime in?

Pete, there's been a decent amount of buzz, although mostly negative. The talk show pundits in the DFW area are not very optimistic on Sosa's odds of being a capable producer at DH - and let's not kid around here, Sosa's probably not a capable outfielder anymore beyond emergency duty.

I think if he's strictly kept as half of a DH platoon, against left handed pitchers, that perhaps Sosa can help this team. If he starts getting regular at-bats, the Rangers are probably going to be in trouble, unless Sosa shows that 2005 was a complete fluke.
