What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
Like Wash said this is Garcia's time to get at bats and although Profar will see some game time he is seen as "Just the next guy". "why bring up Profar just to sit him?" Simple he's the next man up can you imagine what would have happened to Profar's psyche had they skipped him and brought up Solarte? not to mention his trade value or what the media or fan base would have said. The way they are doing this makes me believe that the Rangers org. aren't looking at players in the minors like we are (right now). what I mean is Kins went down they aren't saying "hey Profar is going to be an All-star in a few years lets get him as much playing time as we can" I think it's more along the lines of Kin's went down Garcia your playing second. who is next in the minors? Profar great he's our new utility man. They have been doing it with the pitching staff all year... Grimm, Lindblum, Wolfe who's next... Profar (I think) to the Rangers org. isn't "special" any more he's just another player in the system.
I for one think it's AWESOME that someone with Profar's talent can be "just another guy" it speaks volumes to just how good an organization the Rangers are!
Joe, you misrepresented the entire situation.
He isn't seen as "the next guy," as you said. There would have been nothing wrong with his psyche regardless if they called him up now or later. He knows he's good enough to play in the big leagues, the Rangers do, the fan base does, everyone does. Whatever the Rangers' FO is doing with Profar right now, limiting his playing time, isn't a surprise to him. The player and the organization have a plan, and we as fans don't know what that plan is. That's essentially what we are discussing here.
What we are trying to figure out is: He's past the date threshold where it would cost the Rangers a year of service time for calling him up, and he's a better player head-to-head than Leury Garcia. He's the best backup option we have behind Ian Kinsler at 2B, so don't you want the guy helping you win games in the lineup as often as possible?
Because they are splitting the playing time, to me it can only mean one of two things:
(1) Due to their expectations of making the playoffs, the Rangers don't wish to overexpose JP from a scouting standpoint. At this stage in his development, every plate appearance reveals something new in his offensive game. Major League teams will be paying attention when he's in the box.
(2) In a less likely scenario, they don't want him playing for two weeks and absolutely sucking, thus dinging his trade value down a rung if Texas decided to go down that route -- which I don't believe they will. Still, we can't discount the power of perception; these next 10 days will be the difference between fans and pundits alike saying either "He's the real deal" or "He's overrated."
That's just the way it works.
Annnnd it appears I never closed off the italics. SO THAT'S GOOD.
Yea, if he plays every day till Kins comes back and sucks, that might (ever so slightly) tarnish his trade value... If he is splitting time and sucks it's just because he didn't get regular time.
Eric, to the point regarding Leury in ST, no, I don't buy that mentality, but that is what the FO and media gave us. I believe the Rangers want him to develop a few more tools in AAA and have an entire season of stability to hone his game.
I think to your points, it isn't necessarily one or the other... I think they may both be accurate. He'll be up in September when the rosters expand, and over exposing him now will only give pitchers an idea of how to pitch him then. If the FO is considering an offseason trade, exposing him in May/June may negatively impact his September performance, which ultimately would hurt his trade value worse. The FO has a plan, and for better or worse, they appear to be sticking with it.
EricI get your points and I agree that's what they "SHOULD" be thinking but I don't think it is. I think this is Wash being Wash, he has 25 guys on his team and the other 15 on the 40 man don't play unless one of the 25 go down.Rangerbourne and EricI wouldn't count on Profar helping to much in Sept. "IF" he's still on the team I think he'll be treated just like last yr. There is the bench rook find yourself a spot.I also think in either July or next offseason Profar turns into our new corner outfielder or starting pitcher. He is stuck in AAA until JD trades him or Elvis/Kinsler goes down for the yr with something serious. The kid is a talent! he's going to be a great Pro but unfortunately he won't ever be that with the Rangers because Elvis and Kinsler have him blocked.
There is the bench rook find yourself a spot.
Joe, seriously, stop saying such dumb shit. This is not some children's movie; it doesn't work like that in reality.
Whatever the case, I trust in whatever the Rangers' reasoning is. They've been correct far more often than not. Remember, to keep some perspective, understand that Ron Washington is an employee, and he has to follow the orders of people like Jon Daniels when he says 'This is how I want it.'
Basically, we need to stop throwing around the lazy "It's just Wash being Wash" nonsense and instead chalk it up to "This is how the organization wants it." If Kinsler was going to be absent longer than two weeks, then I'm of the opinion Texas would have a totally different approach to this situation.
Very good points made be eric not to overexpose Profar.
we missed our chance to trade profar. his value goes down every day
Happy Memorial Day weekend, everyone! I"ll be up in Keller, staying with some friends.
Wash is looking at it from this perspective. Leury Garcia is the utility infielder for the 2013 season. Jurickson Profar is going to be a player in the future, but not in the present. Leury Garcia will be here when Ian Kinsler leaves and Jurickson Profar will not. So Garcia is going to get more at-bats in the near future while Profar will continue to play every day in AAA. I'm personally glad that Wash looked at it this way before Profar came up. I remember Wash saying that Mike Trout is "Not Willie Mays" last year, and that is a good thing to remember with Profar. He is still just a kid that would just be finishing his second year of college if he chose that path for his life. Garcia is here for the long haul and Profar will only be here until Kinsler gets healty and then will mostly go back to AAA until September. He may come up before then, but it is not wise to have a 20 year old kid sit on the bench for an extended period of time. It is worth remembering that Garcia is just 22 years old himself and he is still developing, we will see what his future holds as well. There is just not an imminent need for either player at the MLB level right now, which is a great problem for the organization.
I remember Wash saying that Mike Trout is "Not Willie Mays" last year, and that is a good thing to remember with Profar.
Trout did not (and has not yet) done anything to prove Wash wrong about that, FWIW.
Anyways, I wouldn't be surprised to see Profar get sent down when Kinsler gets off the DL, then called up later in the year to rotate with Andrus/Kinsler.
What Wash is saying is that is unfair to a 20 year old kid to have the expectations of Willie Mays on him the rest of his career. Willie Mays was in the Big Leagues at age 20, and did not have the season that Trout did I will give you that, but there is a chance that Trout may never put up that type of season again. According to WAR Willie Mays had 6 seasons of 10+ WAR. There is a chance that Trout never puts up a 10 WAR season again because those are such lofty standards. But I don't wanna de rail this thread. I love watching Trout play, watching him take BP is a thing of beauty, but Willie Mays is arguably a top 5 player in history, so in that sense Wash is right.
But back to the subject. Has anyone seen Profar play very much? Who does he compare to (right now). Not what he can be. I've only gotten to see box scores lately, how is he looking?
You're all a bunch of darny poopheads. Yawn. Grow a mustache. Wash should play each of Kin and Elvis 5 games out of 6, and Profar 2 games out of 6. The two vets get rested, and the kid gets game time and exposure.
Hasn't he played all but one game?,,,the first day he wasn't activated till the afternoon,,,,
Don't start bringing facts into it, Djones, you gosh darned person.
Eric needs his own blog, I just can't get enough on this site. As a matter of fact you all need your own blogs. This forum is a better place to come to for Texas Rangers experts than all others. Hands down.
Uncle Griff and I have our own blog - it's called Secrets of the Castle. You can only get it though Tor.

Thanks, Eric, for the great blog!!
Everyone should have a fool that imitates them.
Sometimes my foot irritates me. Uncle Griff offers to rub it, but then he wants me to rub him. Sometimes I don't want to.
