What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
I have zero issues with Darvish going for 130 tonight. I am not convinced that him throwing 15 more pitches makes him more susceptible to arm injury when he's not tired. He's 26 with 7 years of experience as a professional. He can handle it, and the people lamenting it are the same people that two weeks earlier were saying "Yu needs to pitch deeper into games to be an ace."
I guess there are some people that are not happy no matter what happens. He saved the bullpen when called upon, and pitched a hell of a game after the third inning. And please save the Mark Prior claims. Injuries happen and when they do they are usually freak things.
I don't know who's been saying going 130+ was a bad thing, but hey, stay passionate, man.
Across the Rangers blogosphere there are folks hot under the collar about this one.
Revsader said >>"I guess there are some people that are not happy no matter what happens."<<
That sentence says it all.
Rev, I saw your ongoing debate on the espn article about the pitch count. I think it's a valid concern in many cases, but I think Darvish has proven that he can handle it. I do think it needs to be noted that when he was doing it in Japan, he was getting an extra day of rest. Some managers have s track record of overworking pitchers, but I don't think Wash fits that description. Quite the opposite, actually.
but I don't think Wash fits that description. Quite the opposite, actually
I completely agree with you there. There was talk that Jon Daniels had a conversation with Washington about pitch count after the game. I am interested to learn about this conversation, but we may never know what was said. I don't think Yu will go on to pitch 130 in many more games, but worrying about Yu, because others have had health issues seems premature. Also, I am fine with treating younger pitchers in the organization differently than Darvish, who has 7 years of pitching professionally under his belt. Tepesch and Grimm should probably be limited, because neither has seen more than 162+ innings yet in their careers.
Nolan was talking about this the other day. Throwing 127 and 130 pitches in April and May is not the same as Aug, Sept. pitchers are still pretty Fresh and strong the weather hasn't been hot and it's not a big deal right now.
Sportscenter showed 2 overlapping pitches to Cabrera in the 5th (I think), fastball and curveball that ended up in the same spot. After the curveball Cabrera smiled and shook his head like, "wtf was that?'. Man I love watching Darvish pitch!!!
I bet Reagan knits in her spare time.
I am not worried about pitch count. I am more concerned with efficiency. Yu is great at getting strik outs, but in that process he is throwing too many pitches per innings. I wouls like him to get some easy ground outs (like first 5 batters yesterday) and pitch 8 innings with 100-105 pitches.
While I'm with you Rev for the most part...I am slightly concerned about the pitch count thing. In a isolated situation, sure, 130 pitches shouldn't be that big of a deal...especially for someone as prepared as Darvish...the thing that worries me (slightly) is consistently pushing up his pitch count over 10-15 starts.
If the game was closer I don't think anyone would have an argument about Wash staying with Darvish. In my mind, we had this game locked up and could have (not should have) pulled Darvish after 6.
On the other hand...the pen definitely needed a break especially with Tepesch and Grimm coming up (not to mention Ogando landing on the DL) so, as you said, this really shouldn't be that big of a deal.
Good post Rev.
He was also good before the third inning.
Screw pitch count. I'm tracking MITCH COUNT!! Bitch.
I don't see why it's such a big deal. I think too much is being made of the entire thing, especially about JD saying something to Wash about it after the game. I'd like to know what Maddux thinks about it. I'm sure if he felt Darvish should have come out, he would have spoken up.
10-4 lead. 130 pitches! WTF?
I think the state of the starting pitching says you back of a bit on YU. You need him desperately right now. No need with the state of that game to get him to 130 pitches. If you can't entrust that game to the bullpen at that time then you have to let some of the bullpen go and get some new blood in there.
If we need Yu to give us 130+ pitches every time the lead is 6 runs or less, injury odds gotta be much higher. Just pick your spots Wash.
I think since he's shown now this season that his pitches don't lose much of their "stuff" when the PC gets that high, I'm fine with it. While I'd rather not have him out there throwing 130+ every outing, I don't think he's being overused...yet. I completely agree with Rev about Yu knowing his body and how much he can take, considering how long he's been a pro.
Workhorse of the staff for three years running &... what's up with Verlander? Is Verlander wearing out like Halladay?Pitch counts arose from consideration of injuries that have happened (read Strausberg) - I watched David ClydeAge & history should mean Darvish can do this in the foreseeable future but...
Love the bygone era baseball commercial w/starting picher has tossed 100+ & here comes the manager... "bet he's gonna put in the closer... That would be me!"
Far from perfect that was the best pitching performance I've seen in yearsVictor Martinez & Miguel Cabrera responses to YU were PRICELESS
Can't believe I'm defending Wash here. As others have stated, there's a good chance we will have to burn our bullpen arms the next three games. Wash picked his spot by looking at upcoming games.
I, as a fan from Japan, am happy to know Daru having such men like you, Revsader (It is hard for me to spell your name, actually this is the second time to spell but still having difficulty.) around him there in the US (which I took liberties to guess where your are).
In that game in question, Kinsler dived into 3rd base (head-first sliding). That is the spirit.Daru went deeper into the game than most of outsiders had expected. That is the spirit.Folks, they are fighting and making their livings out of baseball, ultimately to grab and hold high for us the WS trophy.
You shall go and play when your team boss asks you to do so. No matter however much big lead the team has.The boss should have something in his mind. That something, who knows? But, I am only sure Wash is fighting as well.Injury issues? What is Mike Maddux for? ,
Well said, Hiro. Wash and Maddux know what they're doing. And so does Yu. Lots of well-thought comments on the topic but in the end you have to put your faith in the management team that they know what's best, for both the long and short terms.
Of course, if Yu gets knocked around his next start the high pitch-count screaming will amplify. But I'm fine with the way it played out otherwise.
Good post Hiro....that is the spirit of a TEAM sport. Yu sucked it up and threw 15 more pitches. Wash said himself "Yu Darvish, in my opinion, is a stud." It was very impressive that Yu, after 115 pitches, set down the heart of the Detroit order.
Yu's last start vs Houston, Yu left in the 7th with a 8-3 lead. Final score, 8-7 with a rested bullpen almost blowing the lead. If both the outcomes of these 2 games would have been losses, the naysayers would be pissed Yu didn't pitch 1 more inning. It would appear the Rangers finally have their ace.
Oh yeah, I especially like "Injury issue? What is Mike Maddox for?" Good one.
Thanks for your response, sandwisch. I am really aware and concerned of the critical points that you have kindly indicated.
I shall be realistic here, allow me. I do not think the management team would dare cast away over 10 billion JPY that they invested in the RHP with shallow-brained visions in both short and long terms. Still, some says they have already gotten (or promised to be get) enough to be paid off, though. JD might have met with Wash to make sure of that, who knows?
By the way, am I the only one who thinks Daru seems to have changed his approach to batters recently? In the last two games, he seemed to have been in attempt to go himself deeper into the games, instead of being K machine.Am I the only one who thinks, if so, it is all for the team?
