What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
Choo is one of the only above-average outfielders who is going to hit free agency. Paying him $60-80 million over 4-5 years doesn't really seem like the way the Rangers roll. Hell, Nick Swisher settled on 4/56 from the Indians. I would have signed him to that deal all day.
If Cruz and Murphy are both cut loose, which is a realistic possibility, then I'd assume the Rangers just platoon guys like Engel Beltre, Mike Olt, and Mitch Moreland in the OF -- given that Ian Kinsler shifts to 1st base.
I can see Choo being brought in bc he's a high OBP guy and right now, I'd prefer both Murph and Cruz gone. Both are defensive liabilities and on the down side of their careers. Allocate that money somewhere else and let the young guys come through. Engel Beltre is on his last option and if Martin improves, he could definitely slide over at times. Even Garcia would be an upgrade over Murph right now. But honestly, I'm already dreaming of a Choo, Gentry/Martin, Stanton OF.
All I'm saying is that signing a guy like Choo for his age-32-to-36 seasons is not the way the Rangers have done things under this regime. They stay away from the high price tags for guys on the wrong side of 30. Instead, they want to accumulate as many players for their peak seasons. Shin-soo is not in that 26-29 frame anymore.
I do think Giancarlo Stanton will be coveted strongly by the Rangers when he becomes available. In theory that would give you Stanton, Leonys Martin and Craig Gentry in the outfield. Since Gentry is only a platoon player, it means the Rangers either go after (a) a left-handed platoon partner for cheap or (b) pay the league minimum to a guy like Engel Beltre.
Either way, we aren't paying a premium for that guy. Dropping a shitload on Shin-soo Choo improves the team only marginally. Smart money is on going the cheap route.
God that is brilliant Rainbag.
Learn to spell loser.
@eric: If it's between Ian and Mitch, I hope Ian plays OF and Mitch 1B. Ian runs faster and, even though it's declining, has better range.
Also, Murphy is not a defensive liability. Have you watched him lately? He's no Gentry, but he makes a lot of plays.
Let Kins catch. you guys think he can play everywhere else.
