What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
Is it just me or was anyone else annoyed with Soto's throw backs to the pitchers last night? He looks like he was falling over every time.
nah it was just YU
It also seemed like Darvish was pissed at Soto for some reason. At one point Soto was calling the signs and Darvish was like WTF. I don't know what was going on there but Darvish seemed out of sorts and slightly irritated. Is Chirinos an option for the big league club seeing as our backup is only playing once a week anyways? Hes got about a 1:1 W to SO ration and an .850OPS with the Express. I have no idea about his defense but I assume they would not have acquired him if he doesn't have potential there.
Jimmy I noticed that, too. I was hoping it wasn't just my perception. I've posted my dislike of Soto on several occasions. However, at least he could fall back on his handling of Darvish. As a refresher for those who missed it, Darvish's development into ace status began after Mike Napoli was injured and Soto began to catch every day.
If he can't work with Yu, he has NO VALUE TO THIS CLUB. This makes me fearful of losing Pierzynski, age 37, for any length of time.
Just for the sake of accuracy, AJ's birth date is listed as 12-30-76 which would make him 36.
I stand corrected. Nice job Marktown. :)
Soto is the same catcher that Yu had great success with to end the year in 2012. Dumping in the backup catcher makes no sense to me. Soto was initially slated to be Yu's personal catcher this season. That was derailed after AJ and Yu hit it off so well. In the end I think it's silly to assess blame on the catcher for a pitcher not having command on his stuff. Yu was off last night, and whether AJ, Soto, or Pudge caught him it wasn't gonna change that.
Rev, you make some outstanding points. But I have to disagree with you on this one. This guy is an empty suit. He doesn't rake or play notable defense. He seemed to handle Darvish well, last season. Yu had bad stuff last night. So, you're correct, he can't be blamed for that. But there's just something ill-fitting, chemistry wise, about this dude. Hope I'm dead wrong.
Speculation here, but considering that Yu was so outstanding pitching to Soto previously, is it suspicious that Yu was nay-saying all of Soto's calls and subsequently getting batted around a lot more than he's used to (and consider that he was getting hammered by... get ready for it... a 4-for-4 Dwayne Wise(!))? The two things could very well be related. Given Maddox and Wash's comments from last season about Soto making pitchers better and having a feel for calling good pitches with good effect, in my mind this could push some/more "blame" for the "bad" Yu we saw last night onto Yu himself and not Soto, who had many of his pitches shaken away by Yu from the mound.
On a sillier note - When was the last time Soto caught Yu? Maybe they need to... "bring back... that lovin' feelin'... ohhh-hhhh."
Yu had bad stuff last night but I think he knows what he can rely on each night and soto pissed him off because he kept calling for stuff yu wasn't getting over. AJ knows what a pitcher can rely on and calls it. He did great things with grimm in seattle when they had him on the ropes and he called for breaking stuff on a 3-2 count and struck the seattle hitter out. AJ is a thinking mans catcher and it shows how he helps pitchers get through a game especially the 2nd and 3rd time around. AJ can be pushy but he does know his stuff and people respect that.
Soto looked out of it; like he was high, drunk, hungover or something. He also looked genuinely uninterested. .
Soto looked out of it; like he was high, drunk, hungover or something. He also looked genuinely uninterested.Nice fact-based analysis. I suppose you also don't like Kinsler because of how you perceive his body language?
Nadel said Soto loves calling for Yu's cutter and relies on it heavily. Maybe that had something to do with it? If Soto calls for stuff that Yu can't command, he's going to get irritated --at Soto and at himself. Also Yu is not a stranger to having a rough first inning. He had other struggles, but I don't fall squarely in the #BlameSoto camp.
I like Geo as a guy and he seems like fun, but I'll take AJ over him catching every time.
Good Lord-he's a fucking backup catcher.
I perceived the problem as between Yu and the umpire. Thought there were a three or four of strikes on the corner the umpire called balls that bothered Yu
I also wonder about Yu, about his character. It is possible that Yu is a primadona type person under the surface, under the Japanese manners. Obviously love him to death but he was raised as a rock star from a very young age. We like to imagine that we know these guys but the truth is we don't know shit about them. Whether it was Soto or Yu acting weird or both, it doesn't make any sense to automatically blame Soto because Yu is the better player. The reason why Jimmy I thought we might call up Chirinos is because of his bat, something Soto obviously can't offer much of. Then I was looking at the Express stats and Jose Felix is bringing some game at the plate as well. I would like a strong armed catcher to play for us. I don't know if Felix has a great arm or what.
Let's dig umtil we find something. Otherwise-STFU.
feel had being ignored angel fan? You know you are very transparent
Seripouly clown, move on
clown show any factoid that would indicate you know anything of value about the rangers history other than nolan ryan pitched here. you are a clown angels fan
Don't be a fool clown.
Dude, do you have a job? You must be unemployed because it takes a lot of time to be as big a dickhead as you are. Go do something constructive with your time that actually helps society.
You mean like posting inane drivel like you?
Really, don't you have anything else to do except write stupid shit here? Really? Do you have a job or something?
Troll or not, completely agree with JD--Soto is a BACKUP catcher, and an above-average one at that. Wondering whether Chirinos would be a better option at this point is just plain silly.
And "no value to the club if he can't handle Yu? effectively??" Statements like that don't really deserve a response.
Hired gun: Yeah something.
