What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
So Jeff Baker's fielding at third base is about .875 fielding about like Mike Young. ... The hot corner killed both of them lately - but Jeff played 2nd, 1st base well as well as Michael stats-wise as good last season ..
So Jeff Baker last few years hits about .260/.270. He slugs better career-wise than MIchael Young did last year, slightly. Fielding, Baker is like PADMY. Except that, better to pay $500K to Baker than $7 mil to PADMY. Am I right?
Baker and Adduci were the surprise of spring training. .. So I wonder why Baker got traded or released 2-3-4 times last year?
The worst thing about spring training: retreads like Baker, Kirkman, get on the team with confidence, while all of fans hide our eyes ..
Here's some things to be happy about:
1. The front office manages to find decent catching prospects. At Round Rock the best hitting avgs as of Apr. 26 are: Felix, Chirinos, Whiteside. Why? ...
2. Brad Mills, guy we picked up on waivers from the Angels, is stinking great at RR. Anyone remember in spring training in game on Ch. 21 late in spring training how he silenced his old team? We picked him up on waivers, then the next day pitched 5 or 6 or 7 innings with only a couple of runs maybe no earned runs against his old team? ... This dude might be better than Grimm in a pinch. We'll see tonight.
3. Lindblom has excelled at RR, although I would rather have the crazy dude Bonilla from the Phillies up instead of him. Bonilla has amazing stuff but if he gets a hit against him he gets angry at himself. Getting visibly angry at yourself when he gets men on base is something you can't do at the ML level. Meek, Robertson, Burns, and Ross Wolf are other guys that have done good with a few innings in the pocket at RR. Yoshi had a bad inning but is great against righties at any level.
4. Miller Lite is the best beer, hitting, pitching, fielding average, in history. The hangovers from Miller Lite are so few that it creates billions of dollars in American economic output each year, untold billions that would be lost for everyone drinking . Budweiser etc. .. . When I drink a 12-pack of Budweiser, I am on the ground. When I drink a 12-pack of Miller Lite, I practically hop out of bed in the morning.
You're an idiot
Jeff Baker is a replacement player, so right there your entire analysis falls apart.
In other news I farted today.
at least wash doesn't feel compelled to play baker every single day in the 5th slot in the lineup, at least yet. after yesterday's debacle wash may want to put baker in the 4 slot and play him every single day just to show the fans what a stinking managerial genius he is.
Stop it! Get past your racism.
JD, is that all you got? Racism! LMFAO
Jeff Baker is a RH 4c guy. He's not great but if you use him in that roll he's probably a bit better then replacement value. You're talking about a guy with an over 800 OPS vs LHP. If you can't squeeze value out of that then you have a manager that doesn't understand how to use a platoon. Baker as used correctly yesterday to start with, but when it comes time to play defense later in the game he should have been replaced.
The same Michael Young that is hitting over 350 and has a slugging percantage near 490? Yeah, he sucks. Always has. This site is blind when it comes to Michael Young.
suck me dolemite
Hambone, he started out about the same last season. Trading MY without picking up all the salary AND getting decent players in return may have been JD's best trade last offseason. If he were here, what would he play? DH over Berkman? 1B over Moreland? The Rangers need to get younger, and Young, is not young. Even if he wins the triple crown for PHI, I, for one, will have no regrets.
He could play 1st base. That is really the only place on this team for him. I am really not a big fan of his defense either, any way you slice it but one thing the man can do is hit. He always has been able to outside of last year. He is in the top 5 of doubles hitters since 2006 and I don't think the Rangers got a very good return for him either. Lindbolm could be a decent pitcher, but he is prone to the home run but I am reading that he is getting stretched out in the Minors as if he could be a starter so I guess time will tell on that, but one bad season of Michael Young turned everyone sour. The Rangers could definitely use that bat in the lineup right now. The offense is struggling.
good idea to take three games worth of a sample and conclude the book on jeff baker. smart, rational thinking there.
jkolar is right -- he's a RH4C guy and if we utilize him properly (i.e. spelling either murphy or moreland vs. LHP), then he should easily provide above replacement-level production, probably somewhere in the 1.0-1.5 fWAR range over the course of 200-250 plate appearances.
also, in case you are from planet clueless, spring training means absolutely nothing. i don't know how you can justify shitting on baker and kirkman for putting up mirage numbers in spring, then justify guys like brad mills being good because he performed well in a spring training start.
in short, this topic sucks, and it's completely off base.
Hambone the problem with quoting stats for Young from 2006 on is that 2006 to probably 2009, if not further up, is probably not relevant to the current Michael Young. Michael Young is an old player, who really looked like he had lost something major last year, with 2011 looking a lot like a dead cat bounce. Things I will bet about Young right now, he's not going to have a 10% walk rate. he's not going to have a 417 BABIP all year, probably more in the 350 range. He probably won't keep up a 16% hr/fb rate all year. I won't mind at all if he succeeds this year. I've always liked Young even last year when I wanted him benched because he was one of the two worst regular players in the MLB.
If I had to place a guess on Young for this year, I'd guess 290/330/360.
baker isn't the issue. getting him in and OUT of the game is the issue. as for MY they don't have a book on him. when they start brushing him off the plate and working him inside all those averages are going to drop. he is also a fastball hitter in the fastball league. Just wait a little while and he will begin to return to normalas they back him off the plate and throw offspeed pitches to him.
