What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
am i the only that thinks this whole situation is being handled completly wrong? a few minutes ago mlb came out and said hes going to get a 8 game suspension(1 game for about every week zack grienke will miss) imo the guy shouldnt play again till grienke can(and all of these arguments that say this is part of the game/it happens are crap)
I don 't get it. Quentin's stance invited and received HBPs, the game was 2-1 (unlikely to be intentional), and there didn't appear to be any mustard on the ball. I can see how suspensions cannot be directly correlated with the other player's injuries, but 8 games seems pretty light.
Bad incentives. What's to stop RW from sending Martin to go break one of Jered Weaver's bones (when he comes back)? 8 game suspension for Martin?
And I realize Weaver is bigger than Martin...
8 games is at the top end of suspensions given for charging the mound. You can't tie the suspension to how many games Greinke misses, well you could but it would actually be a fairly dumb way to do it.
I expect the final suspension to be 4-6 games. It's basically bad luck that ended up breaking the collarbone after the fight was started.
That having been said Quentin should get the heavier side of it, because he has made getting hit a part of his game. On a per game basis he has been the leader in HPB during his entire career. If you refuse to bail out then you shouldn't EVER charge the mound. Honestly one of the few times that I would have endorsed charging the mound was that Piazza/Clemens mess. Clemens was being a total toolbag.
In the off season MLB needs to go to the players union and negotiate updated mound charging suspensions. A week if you charge, period. And a month if you charge and anyone on the field winds up on the DL.
It makes sense, so the union wouldn't agree to it.
With retaliatory beanings, there is some doubt if a HBP is intentional. You can't have black and white rules that work for that way of taking care of business. But, there isn't any question of intent when you charge, so there isn't any reason that MLB and the union couldn't come to agreement on stiffer penalties that are uniform and don't involve an appeals process.
If Quentin plays Monday over/under 3 hbps
I think you will see it get ruled on by the start of Monday's game. I don't think they want Quentin in LA. There were a bunch of issues with dodgers stadium recently.
I question this...why is it that we look at it as the everyday player is suspended and won't play for 10 games...but yet say a pitcher gets 10 games...that only equates to 2 starts. No one every states that. So no....I don't feel sorry for Greinke and the Dodgers. Don't think it was on purpose....but that is beside the fact. Quentin got the right punishment.
2 months of Grienke is worth $7 million (Dodgers think so anyway), whereas 8 games of Quentin is $470,000.
Honestly with the way things get juggled 10 games is really one start. Drop the appeal right after your turn in the rotation and you are pushed back one day on your second start.
Greinke Grousing vs Sprint'n Quint'n --> Hitting vs Pitching
Greinke is a wimp
Greinke needs to learn the Pedro Martinez sidestep/grab by the head/throw down move. Or at least the Nolan headlock and punches move. Going into a defensive crouch against a charging guy twice your size is a recipe for disaster. (I'm kidding, and Quentin leaned into the ball. Suspect him for longer. Also someone tell AJ Ellis to get out in front of the batter quicker to protect his pitcher)
Greinke is fucking retarded. His instinct to face a charging person is to absorb all their momentum in his upper body? Learn physics dude. Terrible decision to stand there. It's hilarious to me. If that had been one of the Rangers I would call them a dumbass too. Thankfully AJ would beat the dog shit out of any batter stupid enough to approach on of the Rangers arms though.
Agreed. AJ wouldn't have allowed this to happen to one of our pitchers.
The catcher should have taken Quentin down.
Ha! That's the first thing I thought. You try that sh*t with AJ and he will beat your punk bitch ASS. Come to think of it, I hope I get a chance to see that this season.
Also, I actually agree with JD --Fuck Greinke.
Might be why nothing happened with Scheppers and Darvish plunking the M's left and right.
Anyone happen to notice where Greinke's left hand went almost immediately when Quentin got to the mound? I can't tell whether that was a punch, a subtle fondle or a full bore grope.
Quentin was headed for first until Grienke said something to Carlos that re-routed him to the mound. Zack has a bit of a reputation for head hunting. This is nothing new, and Quentin covers the plate like Kinsler and moves little on pitches meant to push him off the plate. Eight days is steep, if it was Capuano or Lilly the suspension would be the customary 5 days. Being that Grienke is an expensive star, money speaks, thus Carlos has an additional 3 days. But blame the catcher for the injury as much as anyone, it is his job to protect his pitcher by interceding between the two and nearly escorting the batter to first. Wait and see how A.J. will respond in a similar situation this season.
Ballplayers, even enormously paid ones, will always have egos regarding HBP. It's part of the game and the suspensions do a pretty good job of discouraging the idiotic behavior of charging the mound. However, it's just stupid behavior. If you really wanted to end them, everyone who leaves the dugout/bullpen gets 5 games, everyone who runs to the mound (who is already on the field) gets 3 games. This would help eliminate the real danger of injury in this behavior and send a message to fans that charging the mound is just dumb. Now, if a batter charges the mound he gets 15 days. Just like a DL stint. If he really feels the pitcher is after him then that's worth it to protect his career. If the pitcher had intent, he loses three starts or 15 days, whichever is greater. This eliminates stupid 'purpose' pitches. The rest of HBP is just baseball. Don't stand on top of the plate if you don't want to get hit. Make sure you clock a homer next time up. Be a professional ballplayer, not an egomanical douchebag.
Les I hate to disagree but that didn't look like what I saw in the footage. Quentin was walking toward the pitchers mound and staring Greinke down. It looked like he was trying to provoke a reaction and when he got it he had his excuse and it was on.
Seriously, who gives a shit?
