What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
Can anyone with a handle on the situation break the bullpen down for me?
All I feel when I look at it is mild fear.
I'm confused as to where this bullpen is going to come from. Maybe JD will make a move before opening day or thereafter?
Bullpen is one of the things that is easier to remake during the year. I think your core is going to be Nathan, Ross, Scheppers and Kirkman. Soria comes back, most likely, in June. Feliz probably comes back somewhere around July. I think we have a question there, but its not a horrible collection of talent. Definitely could be good enough to gel together and be a decent bullpen till the bigger names get healthy.
Nathan closes. Robertson and Ross from the left side and Frasor, Lindblom, Scheppers and Andrew Bailey from the right side to open the season. Where is Kirkman and Lowe? Kirkman is spot starting until Colby is ready and Lowe is at Round Rock to start off, but will be on first call basis. Borbon finally given a chance, but at Boston in a trade for Bailey.
Im not optimistic about Robertson holding down a spot for long just looking at his history.
Scheppers has been bad this Spring, not what you look for from a young guy who has had very limited MLB success.
Bailey, well, that would be nice.
I'm thinking we need Kirkman in the pen even though he may be the best option to bridge to Colby Lewis' return.
Maybe you go get a veteran like Garland to bridge to Lewis so you can put Kirkman in the pen.
Then you have Nathan, Frasor, Lindblom, Ross, Kirkman, Lowe, and Robertson
Thats not a bad pen especially once you get Neftali and Soria back to replace Lowe and Robertson and McLellan to challenge Lindblom and Kirkman.
I like the idea of Ross and Kirkman competing for innings and survival head to head in the pen.
good one les, borbon for bailey
According to T.R. Sullivan:Closer Joe Nathan – If anything happens to him, everything else is irrelevant.
RHP Jason Frasor – He is the Rangers eighth-inning setup reliever. He is more suited to the seventh but right now he is in the eighth inning.
LHP Michael Kirkman – Having a tremendous spring to the point where the Rangers are toying with the idea of using him in the rotation.
LHP Robbie Ross – Two strong innings in relief against the Reds on Saturday
RHP Tanner Scheppers – The Rangers desperately want a right-handed power reliever in a setup role and he is the hardest thrower in camp.
RHP Josh Lindblom – He has not had a great camp but his velocity is back up and he has had success in the Major Leagues the past two years. There seems to be too much agonizing over a guy who should be good enough for what the Rangers need.
RHP Derek Lowe – The Rangers are still evaluating him but they see him as a middle reliever and possible spot starter at this point. It’s still not out of the question he could be in the rotation.
LHP Nate Robertson and Joe Ortiz – Both have had great springs but their chances of making the team are still up in the air. Right now it depends on….
A.) If either Kirkman or Lowe go to the rotation.
B.) The Rangers prefer a third left-handed reliever over Lindblom.
RHP Joakim Soria – On April 3, it will be one year since he’s had Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery. The Rangers want him in the eighth inning but it’s not going to happen until mid-May at the earliest.
RHP Cory Burns – He is still in camp and may be pushing Lindblom for a spot. Not much has been said about him lately and he does have options.
RHP Coty Woods – The Rule 5 Draft pick from the Rockies is probably not going to make the team but the Rangers may try to work out a trade with Colorado to keep him. The kid has a tough makeup and can pitch. He is worth trying to keep.
RHP Johan Yan – Another side-arming righthander. The Rangers want somebody with velocity like Scheppers and Lindblom.
angels released mark lowe today... rangers have interestt?
You mean Dodgers? And no I think we know exactly what Mark Lowe is.
He might be better than what we have at this moment regardless of what he is.
Joe, don't be stupid.
He might be better than our worst guy contending for the bullpen (whoever that is), but he's probably not good enough to make the pen over all the unknowns we have.
Wow Andy, thanx for that great insight.
Andy, I don't know how Lowe was pitching for LA but we don't have a bunch of guys pitching well in camp. The guys we want to go in we are trying to excuse on account of their awful spring like Scheppers. A couple of other guys are pitching well but they are either really green minor leaguers or guys who have failed with extended MLB exposure.
I realize that, Joe, but I'm pretty sure I'd rather throw any of them out there than Lowe. Especially in the 11th inning. Bad things always happen to Mark Lowe in the 11th.
I guess that could be decent until we get guys back.
I'm still having a lot of trouble wrapping my brain around the logic in letting Koji walk. Barring injury, I can't see how he doesn't match the value of his current contract with Boston.
I think it's been posted many times vis a vis Koji: He had no interest in coming back... Apparently, there was an issue with Darvish and him not being Japanese enough (deferential)...
by the way, I think Ortiz makes the roster
Now rumors out of Surprise are Kyle Castro is getting a call up to big league camp for an audition, as well as possibly bringing Miguel De Los Santos back.
Derek Lowe has made team as reliever accd. to TR Sullivan. ... Retweeted by Jeff Wilson of FWST not sure if TR has tweeted it himself yet.
