Forum > Two media-generated thoughts

These are two separate, unrelated items from the last week.

I read yesterday that Hoggy Price has given Hambone's jersey number to a non-roster invitee, but did not give out MY's No. 10. Since the days of Joe Macko, I've believed that the clubhouse manager knows the "room" as well as any non-player, and I suspect this move says a LOT about what the team thought of Hamilton, and of Young.

On the other hand: Eric Nadel said on Galloway & Co.last week that Wash had to ride his regulars hard last season because the Rangers had a terrible bench. He specifically said the Rangers really needed a Super Utility Player, and didn't have one. OK, then what the HELL was Michael Young supposed to be? I thought that was the plan from spring training forward - Young as the backup at every infield position. I'm usually in Nadel's corner but - in my opinion - this stance makes no sense. No sense at all.

Discuss among yourselves.

If Young had been more of a bench player and less of an everyday player, he probably would have improved the bench. But it's not every day you tell an established team leader with the most seniority on the team that he's going to be relegated to a bench role (which the Rangers didn't, at least during the season).

I would have been fine with Young still being here this year, if he played only a few times a week. That may or may not have been the case. He might have been a better guy than our current bench options...maybe...

But, all things considered, yes, the Rangers had a weak bench. It was probably better than the Astros', but considering the Rangers' everyday lineup contained a number of well-established players, many of them all-stars, there was a huge dropoff in the talent level from regulars to bench players. That's not a good thing.

Well yeah, but the Rangers wouldve had to pay him 16 mil for it.

As opposed to paying him 10 mil to leave...........hm.......

As far as the team numbers go, I think it has less to do with how the team felt and more so the idea that Michael Young's number will be retired, and Josh's won't.

I disagree with Nadel on having a bad bench. I mean, I hate to play the small sample size card, but Brandon Snyder was actually pretty decent against LHP. Mike Olt had a walk off hit. Jurickson Profar had a game-winning hit.

It was pretty evident that Wash wanted to roll with his regulars. I don't expect a whole lot from Snyder or Olt or Profar, or anybody, really, if they are only getting a start every week or two.
