Forum > Starting in RF...
I have a hard time believing the FO sees the net value of starting Profar in RF in 2013 greater than that of a guy like Joey Butler.
Butler is a non-prospect who fills a need and wouldn't be out of position. Profar would be starting his service clock 2 month sooner than need be (to get an extra year of team control) and if he doesn't hit well, probably takes a bit of a hit in any possible trade scenario. To me, it is lose-lose moving Profar to the outfield.

With Profar's 5-tool ability, mainly arm strength, I can see RF being a decent fit to fill the gap. I don't read this as a definite Profar to right, but why not try him out there and see what happens? I imagine the RF tryout (under the assumption Cruz is out) will be a crowded audition.
Rangerbourne
That is certainly Old School in thinking and practice. Nothing new or shocking about Daniels approach.
I don't see Profar riding the pine @ MLB level either. Cruz scenario has tipped the choices to be more open.
I thought of E. Beltre right off, as a big spring look. Rangers can easily go to an aggressive run w/speed attack.
Looks as if Daniels has hold of the rope though and not Washington.

Don't worry I'll start in rf for you this year

I remember when Arias went into the OF, that didn't go well for him.

I remember when Mickey Mantle, also a 5 tool, was moved to the outfield. Ummm, HOF.

I have posted several times that Kinsler is best at second and that Profar is a Pitcher/shortstop from the age of 8 and 8 or 38 that translates as ball player. Right field would hardly be a challenge to Jurickson, especially with Garry Pettis to show him the ropes. All of this is dependent on what actually happens to Cruz by Opening Day. The Process may not move that fast, and Cruz could play deep into the season, before anything is even decided one way or the other.. Meantime, backup plan is try not only Profar but Olt in right field. Beltre may finally be ready to step up, and if he does he takes over in center field, sliding Martin to right and Gentry as the #4 outfielder. Unfortunately for Olt and Profar, Beltre and Andrus are headed to the WBC, which means both will play a lot in the infield and will have only limited time to play right. But they will have plenty of time to show that they are ready for the MLB and thus gain little by starting off at Round Rock. So to quote an old idiom, losing Cruz early may be 'a blessing in disguise'.,

Will someone please start a list of other 5'11" 165# right fielders in the league?
I'll wait...
The_Henchmen
Would be stupid to start Profar in RF. Would also be dumb to start Joey Butler in RF.
To me, roll with an OF alignment of Murphy/Gentry/Martin left-to-right, with either Julio Borbon or Engel Beltre as the 4th outfielder, and Brandon Snyder as your 4 corners man.
Certainly one of, if not the, worst outfields in the Major Leagues.

So, you're officially calling Jon Daniels stupid. You're an enigma wrapped up in an enigma.
Kid, you need more experience, as in life years. Baseball on a card is not really baseball,
nor much insight. Certainly not wisdom.

@les
Oh, I have many that would be that or close to those figures of height\weight.
Let's start with just one though_____*Roberto Clemente-HOF
(although he did teeeter between 170-180 in later years)

You did say league, but I am assuming that one could not be stellar and lithe w/o bulk, etc?

Thanks for going back half a century for the history lesson, grandpa urine.
If you haven't noticed, the world of professional sports has changed in the last 5 decades and even the smallest guys (Ichiro, Bourne etc) carve out their niche with speed. Everyone agrees Profar has good instincts, but he won't even be a 30SB threat in his best years.
Profar is going to be the real deal, but to throw the kid out in right field at 19 years old and burn a year of service time is, as eric put it, pure stupidity.
The_Henchmen
Why not sign me and Johnny Damon we would have your of covered

Never said anything about baseball cards or calling Jon Daniels stupid. Go drink some warm milk and take a nap, old man.

Learn to spell your last name Manny.
Not that Eric
...but you nor eric are Jon Daniels, so... history repeats inevitably- remember that lil' bit of wisdom.
It's fun to play big boy with fantasy baseball, but you nor eric are bigtime MLB gm's or even gopher boys.
Just have fun with it and try not to be condescending. It's obvious TRs are salivating to get Profar on team.
GPUrine
Yo GPu, shouldnt you be yelling at some teens right now?
BTW( you arent a GM either, unless youre ricki, in that case we're all effed)
Thomas Putnam
@grandpa
To be honest? It doesn't matter to me what you think. I'm not here to play fantasy baseball, nor am I here to be a pretend GM. It's all about thinking rationally and objectively. If you can come up with a solid argument to dismiss the notion that Murphy/Martin/Gentry/Borbon/Beltre are anything but platoon outfielders, I'm all ears. I don't care if it's the Rangers or any other team in baseball: I'm going to call it how it is.
I'm not a cynic or a skeptic, nor am I an optimist. Actually, come to think of it, I'm more of a nihilist, even though I don't believe in nihilism, either.

^^^That has foundation eric. I agree whole heartedly. My eyes don't decieve me yet. I see as you.

Jurickson Profar?
@JeffWilson_FWST
#Rangers to have multiple players try right field in spring, in part because of possible Nelson Cruz suspension. Includes Jurickson Profar.
