Forum > Leonys Martin - what to expect?

I concur eric. All that money in the bank, waiting to mature, but for what? Non-Upton deal was a big fail.

Sorry Eric but I don't have nearly as an abysmal view of our OF situation as you do. Martin may be a super star waiting to happen. Lets see what he's got.

And yes, you are one to say I told you so.

The inability to obtain Upton was not for lack of trying. The Diamondbacks simply wanted too much from the Rangers for someone who they saw lacked motivation and did not fit into their mode. They did the same with Bauer, who may prove to be a bigger mistake on their part. So it was never an issue after the Seattle aborted trade. Thus, ruing over acquiring Upton is as meaningless as regretting the Rangers choosing Arias over Cano years ago, when the only choice thereafter is to move on to Plan B { Gonzalez, Stanton, Taveras or someone else to overpay for}.

@Eric

On what basis is Martin a "platoon" guy. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying how did you come to that conclusion? I know in the minors he's hit pretty well; are his splits wild? If not, I don't see how you come to the platoon conclusion.

I want to see what Martin can do. I want him to get 300 at bats over 3-4 months and be given a REAL opportunity. I have no opposition to letting Murphy / Martin / Gentry Cruz get all the at bats over the first 3-4 months. If it ain't working....then you make a move. But if Martin or Gentry breakthrough and prove a solid everyday player we'll all be happy they had an opportunity.

What I absolutely DO NOT do is sign Michael Bourn....a light-hitting, strike-out crazy, speed-dependent guy on the wrong side of 30 whose services will cost ?$10M and a first round draft pick. No thanks.

@aHoakie
Maybe not for the lack of trying with Upton, but we're still left with a questionable OF, even with Cruz.
How short sided does it have to get, before the FO thinks they need to act on improvement? We're
stripped of a strong foundation, with now support of sand and even bigger questions. One week before
spring training. This should be interesting.

@MrMan

I'm a believer in Leonys Martin. I don't want to get that twisted. I'm lumping him into the category of "he's yet to prove anything," so, until he does, he's a 4th outfielder. Assuming Cruz gets hit with a suspension, our OF situation will quickly become untenable, so whether we like it or not, Martin will get baptized by fire. I'm cool with that. I'm excited to see what he's got. But I can't pencil him in for 4.0 WAR or anything. Not yet, at least.

From the looks & sounds of Daniels, Profar might be our new SuperUt. If he does get 400+ PAs
then he'll obviously help the team, which is the major point, not retention of his overall prospect value.
I can see Leonys, if Cruz is suspended, being the Rangers right fielder. Rangers could use another power
bat. Olt can fill that void, while playing some COF and 1B. Going back to the farm for Profar & Olt is a coin flip.
