Forum > Make or Break Season for Wash...
Sorry... wrote that in Notepad and it didn't format very well... here it is again with better formatting...

Clear observations:
1) Josh Hamilton was allowed to completely embarrass himself for upwards of
.....4 MONTHS. You do not allow your mega star to struggle like that. You
.....put him on the bench a couple of days, try again, then, if the issue
.....persists, put him on the DL. He has to WANT to do better. And a
....."manager" sees to it that is what is going on. Swinging at pitches
.....thrown in a completely different stadium really needs to be addressed.
2) Michael Young was allowed to completely embarrass himself for upwards of
.....5 MONTHS. Yeah, he finally did have a decent September, but all of the
.....trust... the fanlove... the joy of his game... was completely destroyed
.....because the manager trusted his star more than he trusted what he was
.....seeing from his star.
3) Ian Kinsler clearly was not attentive to his game. He was picked off more
.....than anyone else in baseball. He got caught stealing way more than usual.
.....His focus at the plate was also well off from previous seasons. Did the
.....void in leadership affect him? Was he looking over his shoulder at the
.....Frisco Sensation and wondering just how much longer he was going to be
.....loved in Texas? A "manager" would have headed that off from the start...
4) This entire team is built for the long haul. That means JD builds one of
.....the Best Farm Systems in the game and Wash establishes the criterion
.....for their training. Seems if this were truly the case, Wash would be
.....eager to get "his" talent on the field and show what it can do... When
.....it's time to replace veterans, we're supposed to be able to trust the
.....next generation of Rangers - not go out and buy somebody else's stars.
5) "The players didn't do the job", was Wash's response when Nellie didn't
.....catch that Freese fly ball in Game 6. You don't lay the blame on the
.....players when the manager clearly had the opportunity to make an adjust-
.....ment, TALKED about making an adjustment, and left things the way they
.....were. As a manager, he failed his player first by leaving him out there
.....in a less than optimal condition and secondly, by laying the blame on
.....him after the fact.
6) As was mentioned above... how many games did this idiot bring in his
.....closer with 4, 5 and even a 6-runs leads apparently not trusting the
.....other members of his bullpen to be able to do their jobs when,
.....clearly, they had been lights out almost the entire year - Mark Lowe
.....notwithstanding...
The objective evidence is clear. This guy cannot manage.
David Draggle
David pretty much summed it up nicely.
Romeo212000
I think it is a make or break season for you idiots calling for washington's job. Youtr posts are becoming redundant. Look it up if you don't know what it means.
Not that Eric
BTW, David Driggle has been allowed to embarass himself for upwards of-well let's just say ever since he first posted.
Not that Eric
I gotta defend my man Ron Wash right here.
My man David Draggle. Josh Hamilton struggled for 4 months of the season, but who could have predicted that he would have slumped that hard? And even with the slump Hamilton hit 43 home runs. He is a game changer. You don't put game changers on the bench who can change the game with one swing of the bat. And this "manager" doesn't put people on the DL. The front office and team doctors do that. And there is this thing called the Players Union, that would never let someone go on the DL without an injury. Benching a guy for 15 days straight who hits 43 home runs wouldn't be a good move.
I'll still defend Michael Young til the day I die, but on this one I agree with you to an extent. MY should not have gotten as many ABs as he did. But I don't really see a better alternative. What MY did was play 4 positions and there aren't many players in the game that can do that. I agree that Wash could have handled this one better, but then again I'm not so sure if we were put in his position we would have had a better alternative. Going into the season MY was top 3 in doubles hit since 05, but he struggled last year.
I really don't see the logic on this one. I assume you are referring to Profar, but did Ian really think his playing time was going to be taken away? He was really threatened by Profar. Profar had all of one month of service time and played in 9 games with 17 abs. I don't really think Ian was threatened and that is quite a reach to say he was. Sabermetrics actually say Kinsler was one of the better baserunners in 2012, I don't necessarily agree with them in this situation, but you said you have 'objective evidence'. metrics are about as objective as you can get.
I don't really understand you're point here and I'm not trying to insult you either.
5) "The players didn't do the job", was Wash's response when Nellie didn't
.....catch that Freese fly ball in Game 6. You don't lay the blame on the
.....players when the manager clearly had the opportunity to make an adjust-

.....were. As a manager, he failed his player first by leaving him out there
.....in a less than optimal condition and secondly, by laying the blame on
.....him after the fact.
I'm guessing you are reffering to him replacing Cruz with Chavez, which is benefitting from hindsight. I know you aren't talking about re adjusting Cruz from where he was positioned though, because that would be irrational. Freese had hit all of SIX, yes SIX balls to right field past where Cruz was positioned at Busch that year. If you look at his hit chart, which I will paste a link proves my point. This really irritates me when people blame that hit by Freese on Wash.

6) As was mentioned above... how many games did this idiot bring in his

.....clearly, they had been lights out almost the entire year - Mark Lowe

What exactly has this hurt? I really don't see any injuries or problems with this? That's not distrust in his other pitchers, that is wanting to win the game with your best option. No reliever has been overworked in his tenure.
Hambone33
He should have been fired when he got busted for sniffin the white stuff. Ryan had his chance. We would be wearing at least one WS ring! Get rid of the Rodeo Clown!!!
Gump
We have a bench and rosters can be further expanded in September so managers don't have to ride their regulars into the ground. Or can bench them for a few games when they need a timeout to get themselves together. We all saw what was happening and couldn't believe he kept it up. He's been in baseball so long - it must have been obvious to him. People say he's stubborn but to me it just seems like deer-in-the-headlights managing.
Old Tom
Every year I hear from fans of other teams that wish they had a manager as successful as Ron Washington.
samson
Still love there are fans out there that say "I'm in the middle of a pennant race let's replace all of our stars that we went to 2 WS with, with unproven 20 year old players and minor leaguers".
?!?!?!?!?!?!!?
Bottom Line:
This isn't a video game people. Wash can't sit in the dugout and mindf*** someone how to swing, run, etc. And he sure as hell can't, in the middle of a pennant race, replace stud players with unproven talent. If that didn't work you all would have his head even more, for flipping out and not staying the course.
Only in Texas, after 30 years of futility, would people come on and dog someone who took these "Horrible Players" to two straight World Series.
ilovetrades
How many teams do you think would swap their manager for Wash if given the chance?
Seventy8
@ilovetrades
Amen and amen.
Notorious
Hey ill im saying is that we won 93 games last year
There were many teams with FAR less talent that did exactly the same thing.
If you want to defend washington dont tell me that we made the World Series 2 years in a row.....tell me what Wash did to get us there.
Its very hard to quantify a manager and truthfully I dont think they make too much of a difference, but apart from Wash being a "players guy" I dont see many things that link him to being a good ingame manager
Showalter and Melvin did more with Balt and Oak then Wash did with TX last year (now thats fonking terrible)
trickydick
2 straight WS was bc of.....(in order)
1) JD
2) The players
3) The scouts
4) Mike Maddux
the rest is just noise (if anything wash just got in the way.....see game 6.....blame cruz or blame the guy that put him back in there)
trickydick
The answer to the question of whether or not this is a make or break year for Wash is in the hand he's dealt. At this point in time, this team is significantly less talented than last year's team... but that's not Wash's fault.
If JD makes a move or 2 to truly replace the talent lost this off-season, which is nearly impossible barring a trade for someone like Stanton, and Wash doesn't deliver another pennant, then yes, I suppose it would be time to move on... BUT I guarantee he will have another managerial job within a week of being fired. He IS an elite level manager that would be in high demand. I'm shocked he hasn't demanded a long term contract. Most managers that have improved their win totals every year they've been at the helm, and won back to back pennants, would have demanded a long term deal. We are fortunate he's still here...

Please tell me your trolling us. Please tell me that your bored and need something to do and that's why you just said
"Hey ill im saying is that we won 93 games last year There were many teams with FAR less talent that did exactly the same thing."
WHO? was this team? Oakland and Baltimore? Oakland pitched there asses off and caught lighting in a bottle with Cespedas and riddick and found a few really good pieces that no one else wanted. Which is is excatly what billy bean is known for doing! but in the end they didn't get too the world series let alone win it, and lets see how long it lasts.
Baltimore or the Rangers east Buck did what Buck does takes a really bad team and make them contenders, then he will get fired and someone else will come in and take them to the World Series. He did it with the Yankees, D backs, Rangers and will probably do the same thing there. And again didn't get to the series...
But you said Many teams, who else won 93 games with far less talent?
Joe C.
This is very easy.......just look at the way he handled michael young last season.
651 PA for a player with a (1.4) WAR........this is boardline retardation
the man cannot think on his feet........this is my starting lineup for 162 games......i will always bunt in these situations.....this guy will pitch the 7th.....this guy will pitch the 8th.......this guy will pitch the 9th
so predictable, so sad
trickydick
He is a very very very lucky man to be blessed with the talent that JD has served up to him on a silver platter....fooled many people
Hopefully hes not using that silver platter for anything else, anymore at least
trickydick
All you Wash haters are pointing out players struggles, not managerial struggles. Not one of you have mentioned the fact that 2/5s of the rotation went down halfway through the year and Ogando and Holland were injured at times as well. You all are blind to the fact that with all these problems this team still won 93 games. That is a VERY good season. He is now becoming a victim to his own success.
Hambone33
REALLY!!!
"He is a very very very lucky man to be blessed with the talent that JD has served up to him on a silver platter....fooled many people"
So was Joe Torre and Joe Garridie (sp?) with the Yankees to have Cashman, or Melvin to have Bean.
But quit changing the subject! I asked which other teams with far less talent won 93 games last season?
Joe C.
^^^^
Just off the top of my head if throw out Baltimore and Oakland.
Romeo212000
Wash had the best team in baseball to manage, for three years...
Hubz
What about the Phillies vaunted rotation? What happened there?
Procurion
This argument will never get anywhere.
Unless the Rangers win 100 games this year Washington sucks.
ilovetrades
"And he sure as hell can't, in the middle of a pennant race, replace stud players with unproven talent"
The person people wanted replaced was Michael Young..not sure MY qualifies as a "stud"
Also, I suggest you read MJH's piece on entitlment, if you think the"studs" are untouchable.
