Braves got Upton per everybody.

Put this baby to rest.

Now we can finally stop talking about him.

What if Gentry or Martin don't cut it? What do you do? What if Cruz still lumbers around in the field and hits in the .220's? I think Upton is a young guy that could have been a big boost to the team.

What if the sun doesn't go down today? Do we play all day games?

^ Actually pretty funny.

Lohse or Bourne discussion anybody? Hurry up Spring Training!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gentry and Martin probably weren't going to be displaced by Upton. Seriously, would you want him or Murphy or Cruz in CF? I wouldn't. Moving Upton to CF might jeopardize his defensive value, which has yet to be firmly established.

The package they received seemed light. Towers is an idiot. Glad this is over.

Package isn't light at all. Package is legit.

Disagree. They get 1 year of Prado (a great player, don't get me wrong) and get Delgado, who's good, but has a lot of control issues. This makes them a little better in 2013, and then far worse for the forseeable future (since Bauer was MUCH better than Delgado).

LOL and everyone knew exactly what this thread was going to be about... NOW WE CAN GET ON WITH OUR OFFSEASON and commit to Martin or our pretty decent platoon. Moving on. Stay away Bourne.

I'm still rather skeptical of Towers' ability as a GM, but this isn't a bad trade, based on the information we have now. The Braves have a likely downgrade at 3B but now have easily one of the best outfields in the game, and the Snakes get some promising guys.

I think Newberg tweeted something yesterday to effect that after working with Leonys, Magadan described his ceiling as "limitless". I'm looking forward to seeing him this year. I won't lie, I was excited about an Upton deal, but keeping our chips for a run at an even bigger deal later, while getting a chance to see what our young team can do is pretty exciting too.

Jamey Newberg wants Leonys Martin to be Jacoby Ellsbury.

Now we can focus on real targets: Price & Stanton

Why can't you give Cruz reps at 1b during spring training lots of guys like him(I'm looking at you Carlos lee) move to 1b as they get older that would allow you to get bourn play Martin and murph on the corners, have a significantly better at least defensively outfield, help with the bench as Moreland and gentry are great bench players for various reasons(and ot but put Garcia on the bench with them and our bench looks a lot better), and reduce injury concern with Cruz not to mention moving kinsler out of the leadoff spot(a guy with his skill set should be hitting 2-3 IMO)

I need to put this in ranger terms to see the quality of the haul. AZ is getting their 6th (wilmer font), 10th (joey gallo), and 13th (luke jackson), best prospects. Plus a year of martin prado (murphy comparable?) and delgado (perez comparable?) for upton and a utility guy. It didnt look that great when i originally read it, but in that context, its a solid haul.

The first time Cruz had to stretch for a ball at 1B his hamstrings would pop like samurai chopping rubber bands.

Well, I guess JD completes a perfect off season. He failed to land, either Grenke, Hamilton, or Upton.

January 24, 2013 at 10:36 AM | Unregistered Commentermantis

I can't help but think the rangers could have beaten that offer. My hope is that means the rangers are in discussions for a player they like more (Stanton and Price being the obvious hopes).

I'm comfortable with Profar spending the year in the minors as a reinforcement in case of injury. I don't like that idea for Olt, and I like even less the concept of either of them sitting on the bench relying on Washington to make a good decision in playing time. I have to think a trade is coming, but what do I know? (answer: very little)

If Prado leaves, and he should/will, this trade is horrible. We offered a much better package. If Teheran wasn't included, then it makes no sense. Delgado has major red flags. You're trading Upton for pennies. In terms of surplus value, that is a marginal haul with few impact prospects*. They won't even get a first if Prado leaves. Just stupid. But I'm glad this is FINALLY over.

January 24, 2013 at 10:40 AM | Unregistered CommenterP1 Stefen

@P1, those are my thoughts. They must really like Prado and feel like they improved their club for 2013 and added to their farm. They may also feel like they can extend him. If he leaves, that would be the equivalent of two years of Upton for Delgado and the other prospects. I guess it depends on which Upton that's for - 2011 version or 2012...

January 24, 2013 at 10:47 AM | Unregistered CommenterBrian

To be honest, maybe 6 years of Perez and Olt would have been a better deal, but the Braves just got the Diamondbacks' best player and didn't have to give up more than spare pieces to do so. This is an excellent trade for the Braves.

January 24, 2013 at 10:48 AM | Unregistered Commentereric reining

If the Rangers traded the equivalent of Upton and Bauer in an offseason and the best player in return was 1 year of Prado... we would be storming the ballpark. Towers should be fired.
