Forum > failing to acquire upton should be considered a blunder
You're post is a blunder.

Not a blunder. No proof JUp isn't a serious head case...
And, it wasn't Sardinas... the talk started and ended with Elvis and Profar. Texas wouldn't include either and AZ went elsewhere. Texas tried to pry a SS out of Atlanta to flip, but they wouldn't do the deal.

Actually, contrary to what you said, all recent reports from the Evan Grant's to Rosenthal's of the world said JD offered Olt, choice of Perez or Buckel, Leury Garcia and a 4th prospect. If they don't take that then peace. That's a monster package. All of those prospects will have the same or more value by the trade deadline or next season. Don't fret. Personally, I think the only reason we still have Elvis is in case we trade Profar for Stanton or Price.

Save these pieces for Price or Stanton. I'd rather wait and get in on one of those even if we don't get them than not have the pieces to be in the mix.

Kevin Towers is a blunder

If you read what the Braves are offering, the only reason Towers isn't making our trade is bc he's a dbag and doesn't want to "lose" a trade to JD. That or JD was just like screw you, we'll keep our prospects and still make the playoffs.

Confused about J Upton. Is he a power hitter? Somewhat. Is he fast on the basepaths? Sort of. Is he a great defender? At times. Is he known somewhat as a prima donna? Supposedly. So then, WTF? The Rangers will not be much better with him. Therefore, I'm liking the idea of seeing where the Rangers are @ during the All Star break. Also curious to see where the Marlins and Rays will be @ that time. I think we hope for a close race in the West this year w/ what already have. If we are w/in 5 games of the top of the division, I strongly suspect Rangers will make an awesome deal! I just hope the Rangers can compete so they don't lose the fan base. I am cautiously optimistic the Rangers will win the best once they make a stellar deal by the trade deadline. I just don't believe Upton will substantially improve the team. Stanton or Price will. If our scouting dept is as good as everyone says then Rangers can replace prospects whenever the time comes to do so!

We offered a hell of a package. If they don't take it, it's not a blunder. Good chance in 2015 we might look back and say, "Wow, I'm glad we kept Olt"

I am nothing short of delighted we haven't made any of the deals discussed in this thread. Ecstatic, perhaps.
Go JD!

WHY start ANOTHER UPTON post, when one NEW one is staring us all in the face with NEW INFO???
PT
Wait judgment on Towers until the Braves prospects/ players are made known, could equal the Mariners. An UPTON / UPTON / HEYWARD outfield could be best in the NL, if not eventually the Majors.

Failing to trade Elvis Andrus for Justin Upton when we had the chance will go down as the biggest mistake of the offseason. For that, I will be highly critical of JD and company. The Rangers are not a playoff team in 2013 with the roster as currently constructed.

Surely eric reining is joking-right?

I wouldn't trade Sardinas now. In an optimal situation, you are always selling high. That is what we seem to be be doing with Olt, and maybe even Garcia for that matter. Luis Sardinas' value is low right now. It makes no sense to trade him now as a third piece when with his supposed talent, he could be headlining a deal 2-3 years from now. It is a simple concept. Sell High. Buy Low.
juricksoon
Ok Eric, if it's a failure, what should they have offered? How much should they have overpaid? Should they also have Greinke and Hamilton on the roster as well?
TB
Whoever thought Andrus for Upton would have done it, you are retarded.
2 years of Andrus for 3 years of Upton before he bolts for a huge contract? AZ has always wanted much more.
Stop thinking you know everything
Ilovetrades
oops, too many threads at once. Sorry. I wouldn't have done Elvis for Upton. And declining that deal doesn't make it a failure of an offseason.
TB
Three years of Upton is more valuable than two years of Andrus, in my opinion, especially since Elvis's replacement is up and ready to go.
eric reining
I'm tired of this shit. I've been against Upton to Tex all along, and I can't wait for him to be a Brave on Friday so everyone will shut up about him. JD offered a hell of a package, way more than I'd be comfortable with, Towers got afraid he'd get taken again by a smarter GM, and balked. JD rescinded the offer, and here we are. We have a good team.
Playoffs without Upton. Book it.

What are we betting, Mr. Bourne?

Rangers are in the top four to win the entire American League according to Vegas. With 19 games against the Astros this season, they'll probably win over 90 games. The AL East will beat up on itself, the central is basically a one team race, and do we really think the A's are gonna win 96 games again? We have a tough division, but the Rangers should be no worse than a 3:2 dog to make the playoffs. They are only 10-1 on winning the world Series so making the playoffs is far from a stretch.
TB
This Rangers team will be fine as long as they find a way to get Jurickson Profar in the mix somehow. I would like to do it with Elvis and Kinsler. Injuries seem to make things work out but if Mr Profar is the stud that we have all heard he is then you certainly don't trade him. Elvis and Kinsler are all stars. Yu Darvish is already an All Star and will likely get better next year. I see Derek Holland having a better year. Cruz and Murphy are on contract years. Beltre is still a superstar. This team is certainly a playoff team. I just think they are one bat or one arm away from getting those 11 wins in the postseason to get what we all want the most.
Champ
Where would Upton play?
The CF platoon of Gentry/Martin is a good one defensively. It also will provide a OBA at the top of the order and allows Kinsler to bat lower where his power is better used. Upton would not bump either of those guys
With the Berkman signing Cruz will not be a DH so replacing Cruz with Upton might be a ne wash in terms of WAR because you have to subtract Cruz while adding Upton.
That leaves Murphy - Honestly the Rangers could get the same production from that slot by signing a fielder that platoons with him but is right-handed.
I have been saying this for a couple of weeks. Towers wants too much for Upton especially considering how little an upgrade he would be compared to signing a part time right-hand COF with a little pop and a good glove.
It the the Rangers are going to trade away the cream of the farm system they need to go for Stanton. Paying the price the Snakes want for Upton would be a bad trade

from my understanding, the diamondbacks wanted olt, perez, and sardinas but daniels didn't want to part with sardinas. how do you not make that deal?
