What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
So with this soft cap happening soon how do you guys think this is going to effect the FA market. Between the draft pick compensation and the cap do you think we are going to continue to see the stupid Pujols, Arod, Hammy type contracts or do you think those are gone (with few exceptions). Also do you think players salary's are going to come back down? How do you think this will affect the Elvis situation? I mean if teams aren't giving out HUGE contracts anymore...
Not sure where this goes... I was under the impression the "Soft Cap" had been in place for years.
The Yankees ascended into the "Luxury Tax" stratosphere years ago and have been paying around a 50% Luxury Tex for every dollar they are over the cap. They can stay there, if they want... it's not a hard cap... but, they are desperately trying to get under it so that it'll reset and they'll be back down to a 15% tax rather than 50%.
Is there something new coming down the pike?
I think you have it right. There has always been a penalty, the Yanks have just been over the threshold so long they have reached the point where they need to get under it for a season to get breathing room.
Once they get under it for ONE year they will likely go right back to spending.
Depends on how much of a fan-boy the owner is. You're seeing a transition with the Yankees from George Steinbrenner to son Hal. Hal is more an economics wonk than his father was, so he's instructed Cashman to get under the cap by 2014, as 2013 wasn't doable. So that's why they are signing all the old guys to one year deals until they can start to get outfrom some of those horrible deals.
The Dodgers & Angels may not care. The Dodgers are awash in cash, so I wouldn't place much stock in making deals for players like Kershaw & Ethier. If they want them they'll pay them.
Arte Moreno is a well bankrolled fan boy. He's as close to old man Steinbrenner as there is these days. The Red Sox seem to have taken a timout. They're signing free agents, but not the really high priced ones. They probably still can't believe the Dodgers took both Becket & Crawford off their hands. So they're ionvesting in the "B" type free agents like Napoli & Victorino, which shows the fan base they're still making moves, but not going all in during a bad free agent market.
Sorry guys my Viagra took all the blood from my brain when I wrote this! I had salary cap and the yankees in my head thinking the cap started in 2015. mixed metaphors.
lol - yeah... for the Yankees, everything starts in 2015... once they've been UNDER that cap after 2013 and stay there a year.
Elvis becomes a FA after 2014, so 2015 is the perfect target year for the Yanks where Andrus is concerned. Now, will the Rangers be relevant enough in 2015 to be The Team Elvis would want to play for, or will the Yankees have the brightest lights. Don't leave LAAoA and LAD out of the template, either. They could surprise.
LAAoA, particularly, seems to like having ex-Rangers grace their headlines.
This isn't a fair statement. The Rangers have done quite well with ex-Angels. Vladdy, Darren Oliver, Mike Napoli. We can't pretend the Angels are picking our pockets; we've been doing it to them as well.
The current CBA has had a few intended and a few unintended contracts. The reason that Bourn and a few other big FA are still out there is because the tying of dollars to draft picks has made it more painful to sign someone who is not elite that has been given a QO. I wouldn't sign Bourn or Loshe to a 1 year deal. The cost is too much to do that.
The soft cap has become a bigger deal in this CBA because you can actually get refunded some luxury tax money, iirc. If you get under the soft cap and stay there for a year you can get some money back, I forget whether this is past luxury tax money or if it is a refund of some of the profit sharing type of monies. That is the reason the Yankees are getting down under it this year.
@Tommy: lol - Yeah... but, Ollie was ours, first. Never said we didn't like doin' them back...
Yeah, taking headliner from LAAoA is a LOT more fun (for us) than the other way 'round. So, the statement IS fair... just wasn't complete.
And Vlad & Nap were dumps by the ANGELS. Vlad for injury reasons and Nap to Toronto for their salary dump of Wells. This hardly compares to silently signing away from the Rangers their #1 starter one year, and their debatable best hitter the next, as free agents of a team thats plan was to resign them. So lets see what the future holds with those two teams, recalling an old idiom 'what goes around comes around'.
