Forum > Forget Upton, how about a trade with the Cardinals..

Oscar Taveras and Shelby Miller for Elvis...

St. Louis needs a shortstop.. Taveras is blocked at least for a little while in the outfield (halladay and beltran), Miller is their number 6 starter... both have high upside (#s 12 and 19 ranked prospects) and this will free up a spot for Profar...

January 16, 2013 at 3:50 PM | Unregistered CommenterMM

I doubt STL would do that.

January 16, 2013 at 4:16 PM | Unregistered CommenterNorthTex

wishful thinking I guess... who do we have to add... they do need a shortstop... certainly I can't imagine that JD would do a deal of Elvis for either one of these guys straight up...

If Shields and Davis (each on 2 year contracts) are worth Myers, Odorizzi and Montgomery (and a fourth guy I can't remember)... what's elvis worth?

Is it Taveras and Trevor Rosenthal? (though I don't think the rangers do that)... Or is it Taveras and Miller for Elvis and Grimm?

I know this is all silliness, but it seems to me that there should be some fit between the teams... They need a shortstop and have depth in the outfield and pitching...

I like those players and would do that trade very quickly, but I would hate improving the Cardinals.

While I love any proposal that involves us getting Taveras for Elvis, STL won't part for Taveras for anything short of Profar. They hold him in the same esteem as we hold for Profar. They are going to want Matt Adams to part of the trade since he is blocked. The most you might be able get from them is Matt Adams and maybe Shelby Miller if they are really desperate for a SS at the all star break.

well to that, i'd say that Adams and Miller don't get it done...

How about Rosenthal and Miller...

Then packaging, rosenthal, miller, olt and beras for stanton......

Just having fun here...

Beras? Nobody has a read on Beras yet. He hasn't even played 1 game for us. Consequently, nobody would value him that highly in a trade of any consequence. What reason would St Louis have so far to think he'll even get past rookie league when he hasn't even played there yet? You can't trade guys like that, because you don't know what you have, and neither do they. I still wouldn't be comfortable trading Brinson or Gallo yet, because they've barely gotten their toes wet.

Morse going to Seattle

I'm not sure you COULD trade Beras. Do International signees have the same 1-year restriction against being traded that draft picks have? If so, he wouldn't be tradeable until July or August (whenever the contract became official).

Still, I'm excited by the prospect of having Beras grow into the next Juan Gonzalez (without the PEDs and the congenital narrowing of his spinal corridor that negatively affected Gonzo).

Yeah, Cardinals wouldn't give up Tavares and Miller for Elvis. You might be able to pry Shelby Miller straight up, but probably not Oscar Tavares straight up.

I also don't think this trade would take the Rangers over the top and into the postseason in 2013. That's why I prefer Upton.

What?! Roy Halladay now plays outfield for the Cardinals?! Silly me, I thought he was still pitching for the Phillies. So much player movement these days, I can't keep up.

It's amazing what two little vowels can do.

January 16, 2013 at 5:58 PM | Unregistered CommenterDuuuuuude

eric, maybe you can't get Taveras and Miller for Elvis, however, I would have to think you could get more than just Miller... I realize it was a long time ago, but with 1.5 years left on Texeira's contract, daniels netted harrison, feliz, salty, elvis... In the four years prior to the trade, Texeira had a WAR of 15.3, Elvis's has been 14.0. Not that much difference...

Also, Towers just rated the # 5 overall prospect for a SS prospect not in the top 100 prospects.. Certainly elvis is worth more than the 19 prospect.....

Andy, I wasn't proposing Beras as a trade to St Louis, but as part of a strong package to Florida, who we know is looking for a Spanish speaking star....

But I get that he may not have that much value (though he was a very highly rated prospect that we paid a 4.5 million dollar bonus for as a 16 year old... (someone thinks he has potential)...

Duuuuuuude, anyone with 7 u's in their name, shouldn't complain too much about a misplaced or incorrect letter or two... clearly you know to whom I was referring...

Why not just coax 2 more years out of Furcal, hang on to Taveras and Miller, and go heavy after Andrus for 2015. It all seems to always go back to ANDRUS FOR UPTON. Even Mitch Williams [alias 'The village idiot'] screams why is not that trade made already. From his view he sees it as a double win for the Rangers, allows Profar to play short and gets the power hitter to replace Josh, at the same time gives Arizona the all star shortstop to team with Aaron Hill, and challenge in the NL West.

maybe you can coax another two years out of him... but, I kind of doubt it...

MM, GM's have gotten (somewhat) smarter since the Teixeira trade. Universally it was a dumb move by the Braves. If you combine that with the fact that Teixeira was a MOTOB, and one of the best in the game, then trying to relate that to a light-hitting shortstop seems a bit of a stretch.

Shelby Miller is a potential TORP. TORP's are scarce. I'm suspect even the Cards would want to trade 6 years of a potential TORP, who could figure to net between 16.0 and 25.0 WAR in that time, for two years of Andrus, which at most is worth 10.0 WAR.

You're really comparing apples to elephants if you want to go down the Elvis vs. Teixeira route.

At the trade deadline one year later, the Braves traded Tex to the Angels for Kotchman and Marek. Marek never played at the Majors level and Kotchman was a washout immediately. OUCH!!!!

January 16, 2013 at 7:33 PM | Unregistered CommenterProcurion

Chill MM, it was just a joke. And I actually have six "u"s in my name so there you go again.

What if your name was Dirk but I just called you Dork instead? See what a difference that makes? But that's okay, it's only one little vowel and everyone knows who I'm talking about anyway. :)

January 16, 2013 at 7:44 PM | Unregistered CommenterDuuuuuude

funny.....no one on here likes any player from the Tex trade now.....Andurs, trade him for Upton.......Felix, 8th inning guy......Harrison, no good, cant ever stay with that luck......Salt, traded.....

But, those guys got us to 2 AL banners and 2 WS appearances. Do you honestly think Upton can do that? Or maybe, a trade of Andrus at the correct time, when prospects are good, gives us more in return?

January 16, 2013 at 8:05 PM | Unregistered Commenterozzie33

Is it just me or did the Nats pretty much just hand over Morse? You can't tell me he didn't generate more interest than that...

I don't think Jaso does much for the A's but the M's keep adding bats and sooner or later that offense isn't going to be a problem for them.

"no one on here likes any player from the Tex trade now....."

Most idiotic and untrue thing I've read in here in a while...

January 16, 2013 at 8:23 PM | Unregistered Commentergnats

lol... also, extremely sarcastic...

The Tex trade had unique circumstances. The GM was stepping up and the manager was stepping down. Both wanted to shoot for that one year miracle. Didn't happen. That deal would never have been made otherwise.

Duuuuuude (with 6 U's) i'm ok with the joke... i didn't take it seriously...

Eric, quality shortstops may be the hardest thing to come by in baseball.. certainly a whole lot harder than power hitting first basemen... i think the apples to elephants analogy is really overstating the case.... I think that Elvis is far more coveted than you give him credit for... at the very least, by JD who doesn't appear willing to include him in a trade for Upton values him pretty highly...

My guess is, if the Rangers offered Elvis for Miller in a trade straight up, Mozellak would be saying yes before JD had finished the sentence.... and if JD was willing to do that trade, it would have been done a month ago for Trevor Bauer since he is universally perceived to have a higher ceiling than Miller... and all Towers got for Bauer was a mid level prospect....

January 16, 2013 at 8:32 PM | Unregistered CommenterMM

that morse trade is a whole lot better for Seattle than the Upton one...
