Forum > Any hope on a Michael Morse trade?

When looking at all of the available options out there that we could possibly trade for I can't help but think Michael Morse has the biggest upside for us. He is a potential .300 30 HR guy that can play a corner OF spot or 1B. Just curious what you guys think the odds of us trading for him could be. Maybe a Olt+Perez trade maybe.
On another note I'm glad I found this site. As a longtime Rangers fan in SE Tennessee I don't get many folks to discuss my team with.

I would think Olt straight up would get the deal done - or Perez straight up.

Not sure why this forum values our prospects so lowly. Morse is a decent piece, but Olt has a higher ceiling (lower floor, too, for that matter). And, Olt is a superior defender at 3B and likely would be at 1B, too.

I don't necessarily have a low value of our prospects, I just feel to keep us in a position to make a run for the Series again we need one more impact bat. It just seems more likely to me that we would be able to get Morse than Stanton.

Welcome to the board.

Since Morse only has one year of team control, there's no way we give up Olt or Perez for him -- not even straight up. I'm not very high on Michael Morse since he has a high K rate and career 5.9% BB rate. That doesn't really mesh with the personality of our lineup. Mitch Moreland is significantly cheaper, and including defense, is worth about the same amount on a WAR basis.

Also, the Nationals have Zimmerman at 3rd for a long time, and LaRoche at first for the next two years. I don't think they'd want Olt.

I wouldn't mind Morse, either. I just hope the Nats aren't asking the farm for him. He can be pretty streaky and we already have that in Nellie.

I had forgot Zimmerman had 3B locked up. Oh well maybe just wishful thinking but I would love for us to make one more solid move this offseason.

The biggest difference in Olt and Morse is that Morse has had a better chance to show his stuff. Wash is so bad at letting young players play if there is a choice. The best move is Wash for Morse.

Are you guys on crack! Olt has not done a damm thing in the show! Morse is a lifetime 295avg with proven huge power! The term prospect means they have not done anything yet! Give me the proven player anytime over a second tier prospect. With the exception of Profar the Rangers and Ranger Fans way over value our prospects!

Huge power? I don't see huge. I see power. But, I think Olt has more raw power.

Both seem to have issues staying healthy, though.

Look at Morse's spray chart. His power is focused on right center. Imagine him hitting at the ballpark towards the homerun porch with that ballpark jet stream! Morse is more like "ME HIT BALL HARD!" Olt has done nothing so far. If 5 years from now Olt stats look like Morse's the Rangers would be happy! Does the name Justin Smoak mean anything to you?

Morse can't field, can't run, can't draw walks, and could leave in free agency after this season, but he's an upgrade over Moreland. One year of Morse isn't worth Olt unless we get to negotiate an extension with Morse first.

Morse will be expensive, to many teams want him. The Nats want a quality left handed reliever.. They may move Detwiler to the pen when they sigh Vazquez. So a trade that may work is Ross and a 4th outfielder, the Nats are set in the outfield, it is why Morse is available. The choices are: Borbon, Beltre [who is unproven but talented and a top defensive center fielder] or unfortunately Gentry. So would you want Morse for one year for Ross and Gentry? Very expensive. It also means cutting into Cruz and Murphy's playing time and leaves Martin as the only real center fielder. After Martin, the next in line in center is Engel Beltre [is he ready to contribute?].

why would we want him?

Nats are looking for lefty relievers and/or young pitching for Morse. I don't think they'd be that crazy about Olt, not b/c there's anything wrong with Olt but for the same reason he's constantly considered for trades by the Rangers: Nats have Zimmerman at third on a long contract, and they've got Anthony Rendon waiting in the wings. Last I heard they were gonna try to make Rendon a 2B since they anticipate Zimmerman staying at 3rd, but if Zimmerman's shoulder continues to deteriorate, they may eventually move him to 1st and put Rendon at 3rd. Bottom line: they don't really have anywhere to put Olt.

They may be interested in Perez though.....

The truth is, the Rangers don't have a dire enough need for Mike Morse to justify getting rid of any of our top 10- to 12 prospects. Morse is only controllable for one more year, and is only worth maybe one win over Mitch Moreland at 1st, who is making the league minimum next year.

I'd be willing to give up a guy like Cody Buckel or Justin Grimm, but not both, and certainly none of our upper-tier players.

The Nats have no pressing need for right handed second tier prospects. What they want is a left handed reliever, it is why they will sign Vazquez. They can then move Detwiler to the pen. The only one that even could interest the Nats is Ross, and even then they probably could do better with a team in more desperate need for a corner outfielder or first baseman: Boston, NYY, Cleveland. If the Rangers need another corner outfielder that bats right, there is one on the cheap. just cleared waiver and is a free agent and that is Chris Dickerson. Would not even cost a spot on the 40, sign to a minor league contract and bring to Surprise. He could prove one of the best bargains of the season. I may be partial to those who spend the time in the weight room, having been into body building for 50 years myself, but Dickerson actually makes Cruz and Hamilton look small and frail, and that is not easy to do. He also has defense and speed. Some one will sign him to a minor league contract, might as well be to Round Rock.

Before Berkman I still wanted Morse. Now, not as much. Too much overlap between them, even if Berkman's older and probably likely to garner fewer PAs this year. What I want is someone that can play IF, preferably 2B, SS, and 3B, and whose bat is more threatening than Blanco's coming off the bench. Not sure who that is, but that's who I want.

At this point, assuming Berkman doesn't fall off a cliff before the season starts, I want that guy a lot more than Morse.

NOPE, as of 1/16 Morse is off to Seattle in trade. Cheap too.

Billy Beane does it again... I am really surprised that is all it took to get that deal done. And so it is.
