Forum > Upton to Seattle rejected

There is no such thing as "moving on" this early. Actually, I'd say it's heating up nicely.
Big posturing going on from Towers & Daniels. Usually, this happens aroound 15th Jan,
but here on the 10th, it shows some good heat. I liiiiiiike it. The tension builds...

The M's offer is an extreme overpay. Texas had a last chance to outbid Seattle but would not accept Tower's offer, and he rejected JD's last bid. I have to assume Atlanta received the same call and likewise rejected Towers. This makes SEA an outlier, and if Upton cannot be motivated to waive his mo trade clause--and with that offer, if I were AZ I would throw a few million at Upton to close the deal--then these rumors will continue. I fear that hubris may get the better of Towers and he will pull another Didi, taking a weaker deal in order to avoid conceding to a Rangers offer he has rejected.

If I were SEA, I would add a couple of pitchers to that package and call MIA.

there's absolutely no way texas gets upton. towers is going to re-sign upton if they don't get profar

January 10, 2013 at 9:24 PM | Unregistered Commenterwingsofjoy

I still believe Texas could offer the best available package, even without Profar or Elvis included.

Mike Olt, Martin Perez, Cody Buckel/Justin Grimm, or one of Mendez/Odor/Sardinas should be significant enough. Arizona will not be able to do better than that.

Well if the Mariners were giving that up for stanton might as well put in some more young talent and go for stanton, right?

Towers is greedy. And the gm for the Mariners was foolish to entertain that idea.

J Upton can bollocks any trades to only four teams: Seattle, Toronto, Boston and the Chicago Cubs.

Who says "bollocks"?

That is a studly deal from the Mariners. Face it, the Rangers aren't getting Upton.

There are too many teams that don't value prospects like we do willing to give up big packages like this to get one player.

Am I saying the Rangers are wrong? Heck no, just don't expect us to make big moves all the time. If someone bites at our little fish package, then so be it. But it's not going to happen often.

Rangers moving on from Upton...
That sound you heard was Eric's little heart breaking.

How big was Seattle's package, and why the Rangers would in no way approximate, was delineated by Ken Rosenthal when he said to the effect that Upton had just saved Jack Z(duriencik)'s job when he invoked his no-trade. I pose, could he simultaneously also saved JD's had Seattle not made such an offer taking the Rangers out of the loop.

We're all just guessing about what happened behind the scenes, or what each party's ulterior motive might have been. I don't have any facts to support the following idea, but just for kicks I'll throw another conspiracy log onto the fire.

What if Towers went to Upton and said "will you go to Seattle?" and Upton simply replied no, because he has the no-trade clause and wants to gain leverage and have a little more of a voice in choosing his next destination.

Then Towers calls up Jack Z in Seattle and says "Hey Jack, I'm trading Upton to Texas but I want to extract as much out of them as I can, so can you help me out by publicly pretending you made me a great offer? Maybe Texas will panic if they think Upton is going to a divisional rival and increase their offer." Jack Z giggles and says "Sure, I might as well help you pluck another good player or two out of the Rangers system and send them to the NL."

Meanwhile back at the ranch, JD stays as cool as the other side of the pillow and tells Towers "Nope, I've already laid my cards on the table and it's time for you to do the same. No more bluffing, no more trying to lure a few more chips into the center of the table. Just show us your cards or step away from the table."

Jon Daniels lives vicariously through himself. Even his enemies list him as their emergency contact. He has inside jokes with complete strangers. Cuba imports cigars from Jon Daniels. In museums he is allowed to touch the art. His mother has a tattoo that says "son". He is, quite simply, the most interesting man in the world.

PS - I cannot take any conversation seriously that includes the phrase "giving up Furbush"

If the Mariners were willing to give up Taijuan Walker in that deal and that is what towers wants from any Upton deal (young promising starters) then I think we should move on past Upton. The deal the M's proposed was massive, and unfortunately I think the Andrus-Upton deal is off the table, considering what was just offered for Upton

January 11, 2013 at 7:37 AM | Unregistered CommenterJoker

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed. That's a haul for Arizona, if Upton agrees. I am weary that someone (AZ/SEA) will sweeten the deal with a long-term extension or a multi-million dollar payment to forfeit his NCL.

I still think it's possible that JD has leaked he's "moving on," although he's really not. JD never leaks anything until the player signs / is traded. Towers has lost a ton of leverage with Upton, he still hates Upton, and he still has like 5 or 6 outfielders.

On a related note, I can't believe Seattle offered that much for Upton. Upton is good, but I don't think I would have offered that, if I was in their shoes.

January 11, 2013 at 7:41 AM | Unregistered Commentergnats

I agree that was a huge package for Upton, who i don't think was worth all of that. I agree with Rosenthal/Morosi who says that Upton just saved Jack Z's job. I do not think JD is really moving on from Upton, I think JD is posturing too. But on the other hand I think Towers is stupid for not takign the Olt, Holland, plut package from Texas. If nothing else Seattle turns around and trades Olt for another need and inserts Holland in their rotation.
