Well let's see. We're not gonna trade our prospects and we are not gonna play them at the ML level. What the hell good are they? How many top prospects get MORE valuable once their names have been bandied in trade talk? Martin Perez comes to mind. We couldn't get half what we could have gotten 1-2 years ago. Play them-trade them-store them at AAA/ YAWWNNN.

Let's bench Elvis and Beltre!

January 8, 2013 at 6:48 PM | Unregistered Commentergnats

@gnats, c'mon, that's small. Olt is stiffled(Beltre) and yes, for years here. He's 25y/o- you trade him.
Unless you can retain his talent & value, by extending his player position. He's a good 3b. The MLB
market is short of his commodity. Get full value and move on, by drafting talent and needs. Bye Olt!

January 8, 2013 at 7:04 PM | Unregistered CommenterHubz

this is why i don't understand why we haven't traded olt + package for upton yet. if we do that, the race with the angels is going to be alot of fun.

January 8, 2013 at 7:24 PM | Unregistered Commenterandrew

Maybe there are other options. Heyward, Price or Stanton. The more likely reason is he is being given a chance to raise his trade value.

January 8, 2013 at 7:29 PM | Unregistered Commentergtownfan

maybe arizona doesn't want olt and others for upton....it takes two to make a trade...

January 8, 2013 at 7:37 PM | Unregistered CommenterMM

^^^ thank you.

January 8, 2013 at 7:42 PM | Unregistered CommenterRomro212000

lol... er... ditto!

AZ said no to Olt... it's either Profar/Elvis or nada.

True Hubz, my bad Not that Eric. I've been reading on Durrett's ESPN page all afternoon and it's filled with people moaning and crying about how terrible it would be to send our prospects down to AAA.

So, to give an actual response...

I think it would be beneficial to move Profar to AAA, at least until the end of May or so, when he will be eligible to gain another year of team control. I'd love to see Profar start in Arlington, but I would really like to another year of him, if the team can play without him being vital.

As for Olt, yea, I see no reason why the team would keep him, but for some unknown reason, he's not on a plane to Arizona yet. If he starts in AAA, I won't really mind, because it will mean that a deal couldn't be worked out for Upton, but JD didn't move him "just to move him" and trade for some crappy pitcher/outfielder.

January 8, 2013 at 7:51 PM | Unregistered Commentergnats

Here's a thought. Maybe we havent traded or played them yet because they're still PROSPECTS.

Give the guys some time to develop. I don't get why everybody is so impatient lately. Go read some Evan Grant or something.

@ gnats
100% agree.
We're getting better, but at a slower pace than 3.5mm fans understand,
or at least what 1mm DO understand. I hope it does not hurt mrktng sales.
It's still a business. Seems ALL seats have gone UP in Price for 2013.
There's even going to be an *upsale price for High Mrkt Games!

January 8, 2013 at 8:23 PM | Unregistered CommenterHubz

Hope I'm wrong but both Olt and Profars value will probably never be higher. Let's win now. They are assets now-use them!. We have other talent coming. Pull the trigger-GEEEEZ

January 8, 2013 at 8:40 PM | Unregistered CommenterNot that Eric

With Profar though, there's no reason to trade him. He's not blocked (in the sense that, we all assume Elvis is gone in 2 years or less), and he's still really young. Olt, on the other hand, will not play 3B for the Rangers unless something drastic happens.

Putting Profar in Arlington come April will hurt him, IMO, because he might get 8-12 ABs a week. Let him play in AAA (where he's never even played) and get everyday practice.

January 8, 2013 at 8:48 PM | Unregistered Commentergnats

PULL THE TRIGGER ON WHAT? All the shitty options currently available? No thanks. Wait until deadline to see who else becomes available, or hold them for next year. You don't just trade away top prospects for nothing. They're under team control for a while. I'm getting really sick of everybody's bullshit this offseason. I'm excited for the current rangers to win and shut everyone up.

"Let him play in AAA (where he's never even played) and get everyday practice."

Um, damn... Well done, gnats. Point of the day, awarded to you.

January 8, 2013 at 8:52 PM | Unregistered CommenterRangerbourne

According to someone on here Stanton and Upton are 'shitty options.' Wow since when are proven MLers not worth pursuing? MP, profar, and Olt for stanton-in a heartbeat.

January 8, 2013 at 8:58 PM | Unregistered CommenterNot that Eric

Im sure JD has ideas we can't imagine.
And haven't been uttered aloud for the press to talk up.

He has earned our trust and patience.
The Rangers are at a place i've only dreamed of!.

Elvis is the key. He should be extended or traded now.
If we can't sign him---make the Upton deal--or an unknown to us possibility!
And start Jurickson Profar at ss 150 games.
I cant see keeping them both.

My preference would be to pay Elvis and keep him as our franchise ss.
Any exotic trade that the Rangers might make--Price-Stanton-Cargo or ????
begins with Profar.
The Marlins have no reason to move Stanton--he's cheap and under controll.

My favorite scenerio would be Elvis at SS, Kinsler at 2b and Price on the bump at BPIA.

January 8, 2013 at 9:35 PM | Unregistered CommenterTerry C

@Terry: the Marlins have every reason to move Stanton.

Right now, the Marlins could trade 4 years of Stanton, including 1 year at league minimum, for pretty much anyone. This is not an exact figure, but for the sake of comparison, let's assume it is. For this example, I will assume the Marlins and Rangers would agree to a trade of Profar, Olt, Perez, and Buckel for Stanton. Now, the Marlins are probably 3rd or 4th highest on the "not going to contend" list this year. The Marlins making the playoffs this year would make the A's campaign last year look a run-of-the-mill occurrence. So, this year of Stanton is essentially going to be wasted.

Next year, they can trade 3 years of Stanton, but none at league minimum salary. A corresponding package for those last 3 years of Stanton might be something like Olt, Perez, Buckel, and, oh, say, Akins. Or possibly Profar and any one of those guys. Point being, the Marlins could increase their haul dramatically by trading him now instead of next year. But they probably won't, because they're dumb.

January 8, 2013 at 9:49 PM | Unregistered CommenterAndy

As far as has been reported and as far as anyone knows, Stanton remains untouchable. Marlins aren't listening. So no, he isn't an option. As for the rest, my opinion remains the same. There are better options in 6mknth/year available.

January 8, 2013 at 9:50 PM | Unregistered CommenterRangerbourne

"Point being, the Marlins could increase their haul dramatically by trading him now instead of next year. But they probably won't, because they're dumb." exactly. They should trade him and have every reason to, except for their general lack of reason. (like that?) I agree you trade the farm for him, if he's available and if you extend Elvis, but that's not an option right now.

January 8, 2013 at 9:53 PM | Unregistered CommenterRangerbourne

Believe me, every player has a price. Marlins aren't dumb, just not antsy... untill Spring Training.
If Rangers go insane and sign Bourn, there's an added haul to drop in the laps of the Marlins or
for that matter, the D-Backs.

When Daniels says he's got his team this early, I sit up higher to view
his posturing. The next five weeks are going to be interesting.

Prospects are currency. The more prospects we have, the more currency we possess, and the more avenues we have to work through. Hindsight is 20/20. It would have made no sense to move Martin Perez when he was 17 or 18 or 19 or 20. He looked like a TORP. Now that he's 21 (about to be 22), people are saying WHY DIDN'T WE TRADE HIM WHEN WE HAD THE CHANCE. That's dumb logic.

Rangers fans always want to bake the cake and eat it, too. Let the process play out.

January 9, 2013 at 3:13 AM | Unregistered Commentereric reining

I wonder how many fans once screamed at the Yankees for having this kid named Mickey Mantle whiling away in the minors when he could have been traded for someone good!
