Forum > Rangers Looking to Add MORE: WS Champs 2013!!!
There are fewer and fewer ways to increase the Rangers WAR now, after adding Berkman.
Napoli, if available, might help since Moreland is a weak link at 1st. Alternatively, Cruz ia a weak link and if Cruz plays DH with Berkman at 1st, then Napoli is an upgrade, or later in the season, Berkman could replace any time that Cruz would have spent in RF, and Napoli would replace Cruz. Napoli would also be another part time catcher if there is an injury or fatigue.
Willingham could help instead of Napoli, but Willingham has less defensive value than even Napoli, but would be cheap enough.
Profar might be the equivalent, if Kinsler shifts to 1st or if Berkman plays 1st with Kinsler at DH or RF. Some project Profar at about 4 WAR, so replacing Moreland's .8 WAR would be an upgrade, even after shifting the other players. Profar can play about 2/3 of the season without costing a year of his service time.
Since I see Ross as a strong starting pitcher for about 25 starts to fill in for Lewis and any other starter who gets injured, I dont feel any other starter is an upgrade. However, some would like Vazquez or Garza for one year, or Lohse on a short term deal.
I would like to obtain Darren Oliver, who has said he will only play for the Rangers this year and not anyone else. Adding him would make Ross even more available to start. Ross has enough pitches to start, as he has demonstrated in the minors.

If Ross performs as he did in the minors and in the pen last season, he will be a beast in the rotation. The boy can just plain pitch. He is not over powering by any stretch of the imagination he pitches and relies on location and defense. But in the rotation facing batters two or three times per game I am not sure how he would hold up in the bigs.
As far as free agents out there still, I do not see a major upgrade at any position, left. The only way to upgrade over what we have now is trade and even then, Upton may be your best bet.

Ross was grossly exposed the latter half of the season. I think it's fool's gold to take a small sample from a young player and project him to continue at that level. Can Ross be a contributing player? He's certainly a good candidate. But I seriously doubt he'll be a "beast" any time soon.

you are just debbie downer this morning! Fools gold?? I think Ross was over used in the 1st half of the season and hit a wall that he just never got over. I think the same thing happened to him that happened to Ogando the yr before. Do I think he'll be a potential All star this yr probably not but I still think he's going to be pretty darn good and with this defense behind him who knows he might be a "beast" this season.

Jon Heyman, "[the] Rangers [are] still looking for more after adding Berkman. MBourn, JUpton, Kyle Lohse could be in play"
Does not add Stanton. Soriano: What will happen?
