What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
I am not sure why some players get a pass while others who play better are constantly maligned with bad press. I was looking at some numbers this morning and was struck by how bad on of our fielders has been; and how mediocre they have become as a hitter.
If I told you we could put an outfielder in RF who last year had(fangraphs.com) a WAR of 1.5 with a line of .300/.345/.496 with a wOBA of .364 and 29 home runs, what would you think? He rates as a fielder as having an RZR of .852 with an UZR of 0.0 and UZR/150 of 0.9....this awesome player's name is Vlad Guerrero! Those were his numbers for his last year here in Texas. I remember the screaaming and agonizing over why we would even THINK about playing him in the field-or at the plate, sometimes. I remember all the questioning of Washington's sanity for putting him anywhere on the field.
So why does Nelson Cruz get a free pass? He IS quite likeable, has a very friendly demeanor and gets along well in the clubhouse-almost like Michael Young. Guess what? ACROSS THE BOARD, Vlad's numbers were better-by far, in some cases-than Cruz's. I read that we need to replace virtually everyone on the roster with the exception of Beltre, lol, but no one dares speak Cruz's name when it comes to poor performance.
I get it, he is likeable, but he has become a pathetic right fielder. At 6'2" and 240lbs+ he is a huge guy who ha aged very rapidly after just bumping up against being above average. He is regularly injured and has poor plate discipline. Why the free pass? I think that putting a platoon of young guys out there is a better course of action than running Nellie out there every day.
What are you talking about? People criticize Cruz's defense all the time in here.
Yes we do. We are totally justified in throwing Cruz under the bus defensively. He to me is still average offensively. But we could do better. Now I have read many posts where people want to trade Cruz. If you could work a deal to send him to the Mets, he would probably set the world on fire up there.
Everyone bashes Cruz all the time. The problem is he's unmovable. That's why you don't hear his name coming up on here that much.
Cruz is not unmovable. He should be traded and would net salary relief and a c prospect.
Have you been hiding under a rock? People are pissed about the Berkman signing because a lot felt that if we were keeping Cruz and potentially trading for Upton, Cruz would be our full time DH. There are plenty who don't want him in the field.
On a side note, his cheery disposition didn't do much to save him from ridicule after Game 6... Did you not read the national media reports the next day about how Cruz was at fault for not getting that ball?
That's my point, Rangerbourne....he's not even a good DH. But you and others consistently mention DHas the best spot for him-we could do better.
I don't see a problem. I can see a trade for Upton that includes Perez, followed by Cruz and his fan-friendly boomstick being packaged with a prospect and swapped to a power-hungry team for a starting pitcher. Patience, I say.
I think a lot of his hamstring issues would be resolved as a strict DH, and that he'd be serviceable in that role. However, I'd like to trade him, but he doesn't have a very tradable year right now.
Thus, people assumed he would DH this year while Upton would play RF. Now that Berkman is here, look for Cruz full time in RF and deal with it. There will be plenty of bitching about his defense (and perhaps his offense) this year, never you worry.
If the Upton deal does go down now I do expect Cruz to be traded and that Upton will be our new RFer. If it doesn't I think Cruz will rebound from a subpar season output last year. We have a new hitting coach who has proven he is one of the best and Cruz will be in the final year of his contract awaiting Free Agency. I agree he needs to improve defensively but he still carries a big boomstick to home plate. If he does leave I will remember him for the bomb that he hit off Verlander on a 100mph pitch rather than the misplayed fly ball in the World Series.
Upton to the Rangers for a after- 2014 -unsignable Andrus, then Cruz to the Mets for JOHAN SANTANA, and salary relief. An X-ACE, who had a no hitter in 2012, to slot in as #5, at least until Colby is fully healthy. Thus clearing log jams. And well motivated an another year later, who is to know what Johan's numbers could be.
You'd think that our GM's office would see a defensive replacement for Cruz, is a priority. It's perplexing to me. Our loaded top flight farm system has no speakable corners to step up in 2013 or 2014. Cruz is certainly not UN-moveable. Since Ryan was the muscle that got Berkman here, JD hasn't been too active, unless it's another press rumor of Upton. We're dealing on the cheap side of the wallet. I'm not seeing anything that a neophyte kidwouldn't do in a fantasyland trade, with low budget. Maybe Daniels has been roped and tied? How did Howell find his way to the Dodgers? Why didn't we score that LH gem? Perplexing.Still way too many questions unresolved, in my view. I've done the math. I see 85 wins (+/-).Perplexing (stealthy) indeed.
Obi, sounds like you are going to need to find another team to root for, if you want to root for your team in the World Series, may I suggest the Angels. Understand they have signed a new right fielder.
Obi, seriously, if, and a big if, the Rangers obtain Upton, and Berkman is full time DH, What would you do with Cruz? Move him to left?
If Cruz is on the team, he should DH, with Berkman playing 1st. However, Moreland will hit RHP better than Cruz, so what is the point? Unload Cruz and his salary!
@ les why should obi respond, you just ran him off for having an opinion.
Without a doubt the Berkman signing poses more questions than it answers. Right now anyones guess is as good as mine and yours (les non caps possibly short for lesser) I have been reading this site for a long time and posting here nearly as long. The one thing I can say beyond the shadow of a doubt is that rude or negative, personal, comments will get you nowhere. That type of commenting kills a discussion. Try to remember that we are all here because we love the Rangers aside from the occasional troll. Are you a troll? I read NOTHING from OBI pertaining to LAA so that comment was a stretch. It also might behoove you to remember that you could be talking to a kid. It has happened before.
So man up, make good, intelligent and RESPECTFUL conversation, as you would like to be engaged in and always remember it could be your son, daughter, little brother or niece/nephew that you are speaking to!
Back on task. If no trades are made Cruz should start the season in RF with the occasional DH mixed in.
First base should Morelands to lose in 2013. He has earned that right.
@ les in hindsight the kid thing in this situation was probably a stretch, but you get the point.
@lesI don't get your point les, but I do get Obi's. Why would he root for the Angelswhen he's an obvious Ranger (concerned)fan? If you want to kiss JD's azz, then take your line in lemmings. There's more to dealing, than just FA dreams. Our BP staff is soft and so is our bench. Cruz has become a liability to move. He's moveable. Get it done & cya. Kinsler now has a MY contract? WTF? I like the Berkman signing. Nice job NOLAN.
