Forum > New Target: Drew Smyly

Just saw over at MLBTR that the Tigers are taking calls on Porcello and Drew Smyly. I like Porcello, but naturally, so do the Tigers.

I would almost be more interested in trying to acquire Smyly while other teams pursue Porcello, in that, he is a year younger (23), is a solid ground ball pitcher, thrives on control, has a nasty slider developing, and is on the outside of the Tiger rotation plans thus far. We could use a 5th starter, and Smyly projects to be a #3 and perhaps a #2 starter.

Of course, we'll have Yu, Harrison, and likely Holland before him, but he could fit nicely in as a future #4 for a while until Feliz comes back. Thoughts?

I like Smyly, but how much would the Tigers want back for him?

I could be okay with him, depending on what we'd have to give up. Looks like a pretty promising kid.

Porcello: 54% GB's.
Smyly: 40% GB's.

I'd take either if it meant we didn't have to give up a hell of a lot. Maybe start with a future Jhonny Peralta replacement? Luis Sardinas?

Maybe Sardinas and Grimm.

Porcello has a much higher projected ceiling, and would certainly require much more than Grimm/Sardinas, but I think that would be enough for Smyly. Just a thought!

Smyley could be a good pickup. But I really don't see JD adding much if anything more to the team. Rosenthal writes that the FO is not that excited about what is out there minus Upton.
