Forum > What Now?
My issue with all of this is that it seemed avoidable. Resigning Ham never seemed like a priority, initially the team seemed to almost be pushing him out the door by inviting him to go see what was out there. It seems clear the team didn't think he would get any real offers and they acted as if he was nothing more than a Plan B type guy. Nolan publicly ripping him at every turn seemed a bit heavy handed given he was a pending FA too.
Now the front office wants to act like a spurned girlfriend. They had all of last year and all of this postseason to make their best offer and it never came. The Angels recent history is to sweep in, tell a guy they want him and make it known they don't want a protracted back and forth -- they come in hard and heavy and state their case, they made their best offer at hello it seems and that appears to have resonated with Ham.
Krama can be a mofo.
Pitch
Exactly my point Pitch. If you want the guy tell him. All men get sick of playing those mind games with women. JD is the woman in that analogy too by the way.
Chuck
Everyone thinks JD is light years ahead of every other GM. He is a good one, but shit look at billy Beane and Andrew Friedman of the Rays are fucking good as well. Look at the Rays payroll every year, they still put out a contender in the AL East.

yes chuck but the smart man knows when to cut loose a game-playing chick. once that man sees that that chick is not worth the trouble and has too much baggage he lets her go. it is only the foolish man that continues to try to make things work out. Hamilton was not worth the $125 million the angels gave him, plain and simple. like the sorry ass chick who eventually goes on to become someone else's problem, Hamilton is now the angels' problem.
this isn't just about signing players, it's about running a successful team. just because a team wins the off-season doesn't mean they will also win in the regular season. last off-season the marlins and the angels came away as beauty pageant winners, in that they came out looking really good. neither team made the post-season. gentlemen it's about building and running a winning team for the long haul. making irrational and impulsive decisions leaves the rangers looking like the present-day yankees, an old, expensive team full of non-movable contracts. is that what you want for the rangers.

Sign Priezynski. Sign LaRoche and go after Upton full bore.
Sign a VET #3 starter. Short moves that won't break budget;
We'll more than compete in first half. We can tweak at ASB on +/-.
Plenty of time to find out if we're buyers or sellers. We can WIN.
2013's not lost.
HubZ(is not R-FtW)
Right now we have the worst catching combo in baseball, one of the worst in recent MLB history. That needs to be addressed before the season starts.

Chuck, Price will very likely be traded. The Rays probably will not extend him, and so they can get more than a draft pick by trading him. Price probably won't be traded now, but he probably will be at some point. It's the same reason people think Elvis will be traded, except the Rays probably have less than half the budget the Rangers do.

Is JD the problem? ...or is it this so called Rangers' brain trust? Does JD really call the shots or is it Nolan... or maybe it's someone else. Maybe there is simply so many people involved that the Rangers simply can't react fast enough. Who knows. Doesn't matter. There is evidence that is very hard to overlook that the Rangers have trouble signing their targeted FAs.

I agree with Pitch... no matter how sad JD sounds, I just can't believe they really wanted Josh very much with the whole "bring us your best offer" attitude. No way was that gonna work, and even if we were competitive with an offer it doesn't make the player feel particularly wanted.
If you vow never to sign a bad contract, or a contract that could be questionable in the end, you are never, ever going to sign a star free agent. Which is fine... but now, they've got to come up with another deal like the one that brought Josh here in the first place: getting a guy who is on the cusp of being a star, but still has several years of reasonable paydays ahead. I can kinda see where they were going with Upton in that regard.

I'm not concerned about losing Hamilton. I knew he was gone and believe he quit on this team. I don't want someone that quits on my team. What concerns me is that we have lost 3 everyday players, 2 top relievers, 1 starter, and have 2 key pitchers on injured reserve. Let's not kid ourselves. Soria won't be back to his old self until the end of the year, and Feliz won't be back to his old self until the following year. It takes 1.5 years for men to return to their old form after Tommy John surgery. While I trust JD, I'm getting anxious about the number of players we have lost. I see one replacement in Profar. I don't count Whiteside as a replacement for Napoli. That is a lot of losses to make up for to improve our team. As of now, we are not a better team. Given the FAs left, we will do a lot of trading prospects or go into the year hoping for the best. I am nervous, and I believe.

Slim...That strategy was the same used on Cliff Lee. Granted I agree that neither of thos eplayers were worth what they finally got. But my point is JD nad the Rangers strategy of signing FA's is obviously not working most of the time. Greinke was your number one target...failure, granted he was not worth that money. Upton trade was target two, that fell through. Shields was target three, no freakin way he was worth that package. Now Hamilton basically told you to go pound sand just this offseason alone there is an obvious problem somewhere in teh negotiating process or a personality conflict between our GM and other GM's as well as agents. The Angels from what I have read gave Josh their best offer and told him take it or leave it, which worked in this case. So my point is, the Rangers strategy in negotiations both with FA's and with GM's in trades needs some serious work. I do believe JD is a very smart guy and I do believe they understand what it will take to get us a WS title however there is a link missing somewhere in the chain.
Yes I believe the Ragners are best served treating 13 as a rebuild year with a lineup something like this: Andrus-SS, Profar-2B, Moreland/Olt-1B, Beltre-3B, Soto-C, Kinsler-RF, Martin/Gentry-CF, Murphy-LF, Cruz-DH. Bench- Snyder, Garcia, Borbon, Whiteside
YOur rotation: Darvish, Harrison, Holland, Ogando, Perez/Ross/Grimm Bullpen: Nathan, Soria, Scheppers, Ross, Grimm, Lindbloom, etc.
Chuck
What would it take to get Carlos Gonzalez away from Colorado? He intrigues me as a possible replacement for Hamilton. I think it is time to trade some of our prospects.

rangers wont be signing or trading for any biig names!

Ok I am tired of reading trade for Price or trade for Felix. Neither of those two pitchers will ever be traded!!! I don't care what you offer unless you have an ACE to trade back for them.
I agree this offseason is a complete and utter failure. I believe JD has failed miserably again! He has this impression that a FA will bring him back the best off he recieves then give JD the time to match it. That is not how things work as proven by Lee, hamilton and Greinke!!! The problem with JD is his snobbish behaviour and his inability to adjust to the situation. If the player is something you want you make the player an offer and hope for the best. You make him such an offer that the player can't turn it down or at least begins negotiating with you. OMG this is not hard. You would think JD has never bought a car before!!
