What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
The Rangers lack of getting a big Free Agent or making a big trade for someone like a James Shields seems awfully similar to another Dallas sports team who made their fans giddy about the off-season and the moves that could be made due to $$ and other things. Well just like the Mavs, the Rangers seem to be swinging and missing on most everyone they've checked in on. Hope Rangers don't make a knee jerk decision and trade Elvis to Arizona. That would be a mistake.
Are you sure the Rangers are "missing" on all these guys?
You know for sure they wanted Greinke? Or, did they want it to LOOK like they wanted him to drive up his price?
Did they want Shields? His stats in Arlington weren't that good.
When the Rangers WANT someone, I doubt you'll hear about it until they've locked him up.
They would be crazy to not WANT Greinke. And they have been in the talks for Shields ever since he became trade bait. I understand that Daniels and company are very stealth when it comes to their off-season plans. But you'd have to be crazy to think they didn't WANT a pitcher or two that could definitely give them one of the best rotations in baseball.
This comparison is a stretch. The Mavs went all in on one guy (who will not be named) and he stayed with his current team for an extra guaranteed year and an additional $25 million that the Mavs could not offer under the CBA, even though they surely wanted to. In baseball it's a straight up auction and the Rangers weren't comfortable with how high the bidding went for Greinke. That's their right to make that call. But if you let the media dictate your team's chances at signing a guy when they really have barely any more information than you do about actual conversations between the parties, you run the risk of feeling duped as you do now.
As for Shields... I wanted him here probably more than anyone but when this trade is universally viewed as a landslide LOSS for the Royals, I can't be too upset. If Hamilton leaves and an Upton trade never materializes, then it may be time to panic.
Ya know the Detroit Tigers have no problem addressing thier intentions, do they? You'd think that at least two of the three billionaires, that front the Rangers Org,would certainly want to see a World Championship in DFW, before they start thieryears slipping into a fresh pair of "Depends", sucking on prunes before breakfast, changing from DeWars to Lactose Free Milk and drop kicking Lil' Poofy out the backdoor, whilst Mildred is serving tea to her weekly peanuckle party of blue haired beauties.
Gawdamnit, grow some frick'n NadZ... drop the spread sheet. How much $$ does one need?Get a Life (for our community, PleeeZ Sirs)
Things could be worse. Dayton Moore could be our GM. I thank god every day that JD is our GM and not Moore.
To be fair, Greinke's $147M price tag was a little too steep, and the package Tampa got from KC is absolutely ridiculous. Comparatively, that would be Jurickson Profar and Martin Perez, Cody Buckel, and another tier-2 prospect. That's a ton to give up for two years of Shields and two more of Wade Davis.
That said, the Rangers now have quite a bit of work to do. We're really using about $25M (or less) to make up for about 15 WAR. That will not be easy to do.
Why so much panic?? Everything in Ranger Nation is okay, don't let the media blind you with doubt. This clubhouse is deep, and just needs a bottom of the rotation kind of guy.Look for JD to pursue a sleeper candidate, and spend some money on a bat. They see the returning pitching in the middle of the year and are licking their chops. (even though the glorious return we are all hoping for could end up failing)
Greinke was Way too high, and Shields ended up being too much as well. Honestly, do you think the Rays would give one of their rivals a key piece for cheap? Try giving up Profar for Shields, we would be livid, then tar and feather JD.
This is okay! No need to panic.
David gaggle..... I really don't think the Rangers care in the slightest bit in driving greinkes price up. I only team left was LAD..WWho cares. JD thought he had greinke locked up and waited too long to pull the trigger. Just like shields. The problem now is the price in prospects just went wayyyy up bc the mets know that JD is cornered. Resign Hamilton now bc we'll need the offense with a bunch of no. 2-3 Starters.
Jake, when you say " JD thought he had Greinke locked up and waited too long to pull the trigger," what does that even mean? You think that somehow the Rangers were willing to go over $150 million but didn't tell him so, and he didn't ask, so they lost out? On just about every level imaginable, that simply makes no sense.
The Rangers never had Greinke ready and wanting to sign at their number. If they had, he'd be a Ranger.
I keep thinking the Greinke and Upton rumors were JD smokescreens while he was really working on a trade that would come out of left field and improve the club and make us forget about losing MY, Napoli, and Hamilton.
That's really the plan...right?
I had a gut feeling when I heard all the talk about how much Greinke liked our front office our prospects and such that it was just a ploy to get more money or more beneficial clauses out of the Dodgers. Who is to say we didn't offer him over what the Dodgers offered him but wouldn't agree to the opt out clause after three years. With how his contract is it is basically a 3 year $76 million dollar deal with a player option after year 3 for 3 years $71 Million dollars. I wouldn't agree to that kind of contract all of the risk in the contract is on the team and none of it is on the player. Greinke goes off and wins 2 Cy Young awards he will opt out to get more money and so forth. Greinke blows out his shoulder he doesn't opt out and collects checks for nothing. Now to match the trade for James Shield it would have to be something like Jurickson Profar Robbie Ross Martin Perez Luis Sardinas to match that trade is that something you would be willing to give up for 2 years of James Shield.
Everybody who thinks the sky is falling take a deep breath for crying out loud. Did anybody have us as favorites to go to the World Series when we did back to back? Who was our "Ace"? Let the offseason end first before you start bellyaching we haven't done anything. Let JD do his thing and let the season begin and then we'll see how baseball goes.
Shawn- Umm, what is JD's thing? Ryan Demster again? Damn stealthy. Oh wait, Kazmir is available! Ninja Jedi strikes. How many dead arm redo's are available for Spring Training this year? We'll definately win those bid wars. sighDon't forget the wonder benchs, built for the playpoffs 11' & 12'. That's JD's thing. Low Down - High Up dice roll.
Patience. The offseason is still young.
does anybody get the feeling that JD is pretty much Billy Beane with a little bit fatter wallet? i mean seriously...i get the feeling that the owners have given him an edict to go out and find lightning in a bottle. all these little piddly a$$ moves he's been making lately are getting old. go out and get an impact piece, ffs.
Why go to the Mavs for a comparison when you can simply go right back to the Rangers in almost every off-seasons. Last year, at this time Darvish's posting hadn't been announced and he wasn't signed until mid-January. The year before we didn't sign Beltre until early January. The Napoli trade was late January. Josh Hamilton was traded to the Rangers on Dec 22nd.
Joe Nathan is the only player I can find who has signed before this date. And Soria is a fairly close comparison.
So, everybody needs to hold off with the anxiety posts until February.
Your point is well taken, but in fairness none of those off seasons saw us lose our starting catcher, our franchise leader, both of our best set up guys, possibly the best player in the game, and our best long man/spot starter. That's a lot of production to replace...the moves your mentioned are only 1 guy moves. We have 3-4 holes that need to be filled and time is running out. While I'm not in full panic yet, I am getting nervous and can definitely understand why some people are hitting that panic button.
To me, this off season could go a long way in solidifying or destroying JDs rep. He's earned some stripes but how he handles this next step could affect how people view him down the road. Either way, it's been a fun ride and I'm sure there will be some moves that go down before the start of the season.
