Saw something on NBC Sports about Granderson ($15mm) being on the market. With A-Rod needing hip surgery, Yanks could use 3B help. Potential fit to move Olt + for Granderson, then we have CF pop, put Murph and Cruz at the corners for a year. Would this work? Would it take too much besides Olt to get CG? Would the Yanks even deal with Texas?

Granderson has no business playing CF. His defense out there now is worse than Josh. I do not want him playing CF for us. He hits a lot of HRs, but he doesn't get on base enough for $15m. If it weren't for that salary, he'd fit right in in Oakland (HRs at the expense of OBP).

I know there were a few times when we could have used a few more HRs this year, but I'm not sure that's the best answer to getting better. Our defense took a nosedive this year, going from 6th highest team UZR in 2011 (28.1) to 12th (7.1). Replacing Josh with Granderson would probably make that number drop even more, even if we get a bounce-back from Ian.

Granderson's a FA after the year too. Think we're trying to use Olt to get someone who'll be here longer and who's younger, e.g. Upton.

WASHBALL... ReDo WeDo~
Call me crazy, but I'm still seeing Defense + Pitching,
with focus on speed & manufac runs, via timely
hits/moving runners, bunts and patient @plate.
Granderson is a NoFit for me.
Strength Up the Middle.
Now where is our catcher and TORP?

Olt would be too much for a one year rental.

I just want to see Gentry and Martin finally get some playing time. Is that too much to ask?

Agreed with Henchman. Gentry and Martin have earned the CF duties. I really believe their combined WAR will easily crack the top 10 in the MLB and possibly top 5. They compliment each other extremely well.

@P1 Stefen: did you mean top 10 among CFs, or top 10 overall? Because I don't see the latter happening. The former might. Maybe.

OK, so Grandy can't play Center...is he sufficient to replace Hamilton at a COF spot if a deal doesn't get done, while still running either Murph or Cruz into the other COF spot and platooning Gentry \ Martin in Center? I get that people don't want to move Olt for something with only one year, but maybe the deal gets bigger and it becomes Olt + for Granderson +. Would the front office (not the armchair GM) have any interest in that?

nope.

It almost looks like Hambone will be staying in Texas for a few more years. I don't thnik any OF trades need to be made till he is figured out. If we re-sign hamilton we can then focus our trade baits to aquiring a catcher and maybe a TORP.

I'm confused. Why wouldn't the Yankees deal with us?

December 4, 2012 at 4:36 PM | Unregistered CommenterMarktown

This is all, of course, contingent upon not re-signing Hamilton. Thanks for the in depth response, Txball.

I would trade Young straight up for Granderson, if for no other reason than Grandy has more trade value than Young and could be flipped for something of value (whereas Young has zero trade value and if the Yanks/Phils are desperate enough to want him the Rangers must make the deal at all costs).

However I don't think the Yankees would do that. If they think Granderson is more of a sunk cost than Young (they're wrong but) maybe that's a red flag.

@ Jondar

Could the Rangers package a prospect (Grimm?) with MY for Granderson? I wonder what MYs feelings would be about going to NY and whether he would put the negs on it...

@ Andy
CF, definitely not MLB. I would be high on some crazy stuff if I believed that.

@Hart To me that all depends on what we could flip Granderson for. I'm really not all that interested in Granderson as a Ranger but if the Yankees want to turn $15M of Grandy into $16M of Young for 2013 then I'd do it if I'm the Rangers and then flip Grandy to another team. I would include a prospect to make the Yankees bite but probably not Grimm, he seems too valuable. Maybe Tepesch or N Ramirez (who I admittedly know little about).

A-Rod might miss the entire season and the Yankees are still the Yankees. Young and his agent realize that there is playing time to be had there. He would surely choose playing everyday for NYY over riding the pine for TEX (assuming the Rangers frame it that way to him).
