Forum > Upton/Bauer

Blurb from earlier post repasted to see what pple think. Kind of got off track in earlier thread.

1. Would you be on board with the deal proposed below?

2. Would you do deal with either Olt or Perez?

3. Who would AZ want more: Olt/Perez? I'd think Olt, but would they do the deal if only Perez was on table?

4. Which team would be more likely to balk at the trade?

5. What would need to be included to make the team that declines the trade change their mind, if anything.

"I hope Texas & AZ revisit during the winter meetings and structure something around Upton/Bauer for Elvis, either Olt OR Perez + lesser prospect like Luke Jackson, Roman Mendez, Sardinas or Garcia. We would get the power bat to replace some of Hamilton's offense, would have a SS with surplus value for years to come (vs. having to worry about signing Elvis to a $125M+ deal), and would have a young pitcher with Ace potential. Just my 2 cents..."

1 Choice of
(a) sign Elvis to a monster deal
(b) trade him this off-season

It's not an either-or situation.

2
Hamilton may have scared away enough competition that he makes too much sense to let get away.

3
Is Bauer truly available?

4
Is he any more of a prospect than M Perez? Grass isn't always as green over yonder as it looks.

I think the Upton only trade is more likely to happen than the Upton plus Bauer trade. Kevin Towers has been talking about trading Upton for two years now. I think Olt plus Perez is probably the most we would offer. Towers wants an elite shortstop and I doubt he is going to be able to pry Simmons from Atlanta or Elvis from us, so he might be willing to settle for the offer. It's not like the Diamondbacks couldn't use a third baseman with Olt's potential impact.

There were reports that AZ has grown tired of Bauer, I guess for his quirkiness. He has a lot of untraditional routines and unusual delivery or something. Maybe an organization that challenges the status quo in regards to pitching would do him some good. It also doesn't hurt that he and Cody Buckel are best friends. Buckel did well in AA offer he got his feet wet and Bauer struggled when he got called up. Bauer will have time to develop a little bit more here (unless it all clicks in camp and he forces his way into rotation), especially if we end up w/Greinke. Maybe them being around each other would do both some good. If not, we create more competition for one of the young guys to win a rotation spot. Bauer is definitely a super talented, high upside guy, and I think he would give a lot more respect to an organization run by Nolan Ryan with the Maddux brothers as mentors.

I believe what AZ is asking for is both Andrus and Perez, the Rangers said no to that and offered both Olt and Perez and AZ said no to that. AZ is asking for too much - I really don't think the Rangers will make a deal with AZ.
