Forum > Rangers pick up a pitcher via minor trade ...

Cory Burns from San Diego

For cash or PTBNL

Great stats in the minors, flopped when called up by SD, could be a candidate for Rangers pen or could land in the minors for more development.

Probably a deal that happened because Rangers had room on 40-man, but the fact the Rangers are willing to invest one of their open 40-man spots on him means they might see some value here.

Jamey Newberg's notes on Burns:

* RHP
* Drafted by Cleveland in the eighth round in 2009 out of the University of Arizona
* Has pitched exclusively out of the bullpen
* In his first full pro season (2010), Burns was named the Carolina League’s Best Reliever (BA survey)
* In 2011, he was named the Eastern League’s Best Reliever, leading all of minor league baseball with 35 saves.
* In 2012, was named the Pacific Coast League’s Best Reliever, and possessor of the league’s best changeup.
* In his four years on the farm, Burns has a 2.36 ERA and 91 saves in 99 opportunities
* Minor league opponents have hit .204/.260/.292 (with right-handed hitters faring consistently worse than lefties)
* Opponents have gone deep only eight times in his 213.1 innings of work
* Opponents have grounded out twice as often as they’ve gotten out in the air.
* 266 minor league K's (11.22 per nine innings)
* Only 47 unintentional walks (1.98 per nine).

Taken one pick before Paul Goldshmidt. That means he's better, right?

Put the champagne on ice guys, we pretty much just clinched the 2013 World Series.

Carolina League's best reliever. Eastern League's best reliever. Led a league in saves once. Yep, you can pretty much kiss Joe Nathan goodbye.

Some people just wanna see the world Burns.

"Some people just wanna see the world Burns."

I see what you did there.

The big question I have about this, naturally, is: Will Chuck Morgan also play Johnny Cash when Cory Burns comes into the game in addition to when the opponent's relievers are being taken out?

"...and it Burns, Burns, Burns, the Ring of Fire.."

I'd rather he played "Fire Water Burn", but that probably wouldn't happen.

really for what I assume is going to be next to nothing cost with 2-3 options left and great minor league numbers this could end up being a great move(really at best this year hes going to be trusted to the mark lowe role 7inning/blowout reliever) at worst he gets bombed a bit in the big leagues and weve lost nothing.

This is the kind of blockbuster move i was expecting for JD to make. Very Very pleased.

Fangraphs has an interesting article on Wilton Lopez.

He isn't expensive and had a favorable ground out ratio. Makes you wonder why Philly bailed.

Seriously though, if & when Burns makes it to Arlington, can we make boo-urns cheers a thing?

Pitched the entire season (AAA and Big League) with an injured finger. Couldnt throw his fastball, or curve ball due to the injury. Fixed this off season. He can pitch.
