Forum > Wil Myers

I Read Wil Myers from the Royals would be available for front line pitching. What do you think it would take to get him into a Rangers uniform? He batted .314 with 37 homers and 109 RBIs in 134 games at Omaha and Class AA Northwest Arkansas and is coming off as the 2012 Minor league player of the year.

Myers is considered one of the top prospects in all baseball, as we all know. His numbers are practically off the charts. The Royals are most likely looking for a TORP or at least a #2 with several years of control, and probably at a reasonable price (i.e. not signed to a career-making contract). The Rangers probably don't have a pitcher that fits that bill. I think even Harrison probably isn't quite as good as they'd want, and Yu's contract is good enough to provide lots of surplus value even though it's not terribly cheap, but you know the Rangers aren't trading Yu for a prospect, no matter how promising he is.

TL;DR: I don't foresee a good fit.

Well, bored, you state that the Royals want frontline pitching for Myers, then ask what it would take to get him to the Rangers. Who do the Rangers have that constitutes "frontline pitching?" You win points if you say Darvish. If you say any other names, you lose points. So does that answer your question?

Instead of Myers, I've always been keen on Eric Hosmer. He's only 23, left handed, cheap, and could thrive in Arlington. His down year last year makes the price to get him rather small as well. Maybe Perez?

Don't give up front line pitching for a prospect...next question.

November 26, 2012 at 11:04 AM | Unregistered CommenterFajita

I was thinking maybe Holland Perez and Grimm might get the job done. Holland's team friendly contract and a proven #2 or # 3 starter. Perez, a lefty who is still only 21 with alot of upside and Grimm a power right hander with a good curveball. . Wil Myers is a top prospect but at the end of the day he still is a prospect. Then again I have never been good with these hypothetical trade situations. Thanks for the input from everyone though.

Don't think so, bored. Granted he's "just a prospect," but he's one of the best in baseball, and therefore one of the most untouchable. Look at it this wasy: Would you trade Profar for Holland, Perez, and Grimm?

November 26, 2012 at 11:43 AM | Unregistered Commentergeo

Myers is in the same class as Profar and Tavares from the Cardinals. I heard the Royals wanted Matt Moore for him. So that's the class of player they want for him.

The Rangers have a lot of pitching, but not on the level of the Rays. I don't think we're a very good match for KC.

Gotcha.

Well one can only wish then.

Myers is a monster. A Matt Moore/Wil Myers trade would be interesting to see go down, but one of those that each GM would probably have trouble pulling the trigger.

I suspect the Rangers are trying to add to their better pitching, not trade it away. And that is reportedly what the Royals are expecting in trade if you want Myers, so this sounds like a nonstarter.

November 26, 2012 at 2:09 PM | Unregistered Commenteransel

Yeah I don't see the Rangers chiseling into that deal and turning it into a three-way. KC needs a TORP - preferably young and cheap because they're a small-market team, and TB needs hitting - preferably young and cheap because they're a small-market team. It's a perfect deal without getting anyone else involved.

Right on target, Kristen. MLBTR is reporting the Royals are looking to trade Meyers for Shields or Lester. Lester makes no sense to me and even Shields seems lacking in sufficient value. But the Rays have a lot of pitchers to sweeten the pot. So if the Royals are right to move Meyers, a big if, then does it make sense for the Rangers to likewise seek pitching with Profar?

November 26, 2012 at 8:02 PM | Unregistered Commenterprimi timpano

If they will take Lester, I have to think a package around Harrison would do it. I'd do that.

November 26, 2012 at 9:55 PM | Unregistered Commenteraggiecurt05

Aggie: ditto

November 26, 2012 at 10:49 PM | Unregistered Commenterprimi timpano

Is this for real? per MLBTR:
"8:51pm: A Major League source confirmed to WEEI's Rob Bradford that the two teams have indeed discusseda trade that would center around Lester and Myers. According to Bradford, the talks also included the possibility of Boston sending outfield help to Kansas City with some pitching heading back to the Red Sox. He echoes that nothing is close."

I mean why not just trade Harrison and prospects for Meyers, then make a package for Shields around Olt/Perez? Wouldn't that save a ton of money moving forward? You could ship Murph or Cruz for prospects to save even more money to sign whoever. Having a roster built around Meyers and Profar would be a dream...and probably is just that.

Why not start a play @ Butler/KC, then MY gets pizzed and we ship him off to (accepted) Seattle...
We give Butler a Key to the City, as we wave bye bye in a Big Pkg trade to Tampa for a TORP.

November 26, 2012 at 11:36 PM | Unregistered CommenterNubZ

@Nubz- the rumor surrounding Myers is that KC supposedly is interested in competing now and would prefer to use prospects to fill current rotation spots than current starters.

I reaffirm that I would give Harrison for Myers, but the KC concept is an interesting one. It tells me (if it's true) that they think the scales of value have tipped too far toward prospects who have accomplished exactly nothing at the major league level, so why not capitalize on this market inefficiency?

November 27, 2012 at 12:12 PM | Unregistered Commenteraggiecurt05

You hit the head on the nail aggie, teams are going for prospects instead of MLB player slike i havent really seen before, instead of several prospects for an mlb player we are having several mlb players for prospects deals being thrown out, what happens if you trade away two proven guys for an unproven one and he busts...then what? Everyone is looking for the next Trout/Harper.

Here's my dream:

Profar
Andrus
Heyward
Beltre
Myers
Martin
d'Arnaud
Moreland
Kinsler dh

Price
Darvish
Harrison
Holland
Whoever? Feliz/Lewis when healthy

Who cares about the farm 6+ years with this lineup.

November 29, 2012 at 12:03 AM | Unregistered Commentergtownfan

I love to dream just like the rest of us, but I can't even remotely put together the pieces that could land all of the following while retaining those you included. With that, I'll play along. If you want these players, who says no?

Jason Heyward (Olt plus Cruz and E Beltre)
David Price (Andrus plus Perez and Sardinas)
Wil Myers (Harrison plus Cody Buckel)
Travis D'Arnaud (Kinsler plus Murphy and Alfaro)

Who says no?

November 29, 2012 at 4:04 PM | Unregistered Commenteraggiecurt05

- Braves say no; Cruz is only for 1 year and costs a lot.
- I'm inclined to say Rays say no, but this one seems most feasible.
- Royals say no; they almost certainly aren't trading Myers, at least not for anything less than an ace.
- Blue Jays don't even let you get to Murphy. As soon as you say "D'Arnaud" and "Kinsler", Alex hangs up. Ian is now very difficult to trade with his contract. They would probably want someone that could have Ian's impact, but not his contract, for D'Arnaud, if they're willing to trade him at all.

November 29, 2012 at 4:53 PM | Unregistered CommenterAndy

I'm pretty interested to see if a package centered around Harrison would be enough to get KC to listen. If they are actually reportedly interested in Lester, then why not Harrison? Has Harrison not overtaken Lester as far as value on the market today? Certainly the Rangers would be interested in that too right?

November 29, 2012 at 5:34 PM | Unregistered CommenterKyle

After Harrison's great year last year I thought it stock would be pretty high. Maybe a Harrison and L. Martin get the job done?

November 29, 2012 at 7:51 PM | Unregistered CommenterBored@work

Think of it like this:

Myers has 6 years. If he's as good as he's projected to be, he'll produce between 18.0-24.0 WAR (3.0-4.0 WAR/year) before he hits free agency. And that's on the low end.

If you traded two years of Matt Harrison, that's at most 8.0 WAR. Are you confident in Leonys Martin making up for that extra 10.0-20.0 WAR? Because, even though us as Rangers fans are confident in his ability to be a pretty sturdy 2.5-3.0 WAR player annually, he's still a huge question mark.
