Forum > 40 Man Roster Question

Any reason why Chris McGuiness wasn't added to the 40 Man Roster? He was the AFL MVP and had a nice season, but now he could be taken in the Rule 5?

I don't believe he's rule 5 eligible. He's been in the organization for less than 3 years.

Selection eligibility
Players are eligible for selection in the Rule 5 draft who are not on their major league organization's 40-man roster and:

– were signed at age 19 or older and have been in the organization for four years; or

– were signed at age 18 or younger and have been in the organization for five years.

I think McGuinness is eligible to be drafted. The Rangers may feel that he's unlikely to be taken, or feel that they have better prospects at his position.

He was eligible, just not someone the Rangers needed to add. His numbers may look pretty good on the surface, and it's great that he had such a nice AFL, but the team adding him would need to keep him on the roster for the entire season, and McGuinnes doesn't possess any special tools to warrant that type of risk.

He's not a big prospect or anything. Best case scenario is that he ends up as a bench/platoon bat.

Yeah, looks like you're right. Scott Lucas has him as eligible. Maybe it's 4 years in the minors, not with the organization.

Good rule of thumb: Any high schooler who was drafted in 2008 or earlier is eligible. Any college player who was drafted in 2009 or earlier is eligible. It doesn't matter what team drafted the player.

McGuiness was drafted in 2009 out of college, so he is eligible. He is just not much of a prospect. ALWAYS ALWAYS ignore Arizona Fall League numbers. You can't base anything on them. The pitching generally sucks because teams have shut down their best minor leaguers, and Arizona is a great place to hit anyway.
