Would an Andrus for Upton swap make sense, if they took back MY in the deal?

November 14, 2012 at 3:08 PM | Unregistered CommenterJ2

Why would Arizona want Young?

Bc they'd get Andrus. TX would be eating most of Young's salary. He's still serviceable, if used properly.

No.

And please direct all future _______ for ________? posts to: www.bleacherreport.com

Since they were reportedly willing to part with Upton for Simmons, I really don't think Andrus will be traded for Upton. I think JD will be able to sweet talk another trade that in the long run would amount to, as far as the Rangers are concerned, an Olt for Upton trade.

So is your thought then that by unloading Young we would re-use his $15M on another position? That makes some sense but I once again would have to agree with geo in that I don't see why the DBacks would do that. Young has little value in the AL... and absolutely zero value in the NL.
I'm not on the "I hate Michael Young" bandwagon like everyone else... he has single-handedly carried this team at times throughout his career and I'm eternally thankful .. but he's not that player anymore and nobody in their right mind would take on his $15M, even if it meant getting Elvis, or someone of his caliber, back in the deal (assuming there was a Justin Upton type player involved).

I think we're stuck with MichaelYoung my friend... it's the price you pay for haphazardly spending big bucks for a player in his 30's. I guarantee you that in the next 3-5 years the Tigers and Angels are BEGGING other teams to take on the contracts of Fielder and Pujols, respectively. As tempting as it is at the time, signing guys in their 30's (or fat guys in their late 20's) to long term contracts is bad business and thank the good Lord we have a GM that's learned from his mistakes.

BTW - screw Henchman and his comment about taking your fantasy trade scenarios to another website. Everyone on here loves to play GM and if they say they don't, they're lying... so keep em' coming and ignore the haters.

AZ will trade upton for andrus straight up.....we won't
I think its fair to say to them that we will do it if you take young also

This would be great

This sounds like a reasonable deal for both sides to me and would free up some money for us to sign a free agent position player.

I think it's more likely we see an Elvis/Olt/Grimm package for Upton/Bauer. Makes sense for both teams and players. We would then be left with a huge pitching talent pool to build/trade from:

Darvish
Greinke?
Harrison
Holland
Ogando
Bauer
Perez
Buckel

Mid-Season:
Lewis
Feliz

If you pencil in Greinke, then we pretty much have the ability to get whoever we want on the trade market.

In my estimation, Elvis + Young for Upton, makes sense for the Rangers ...in large part because that frees up about $11M in salary to help pay Greinke (or whoever).

But if Arizona sees Young as a pure waste of salary with no contributory value whatsoever, it's not a deal they'd ever make. And based on his age and his horrendous production (both on offense and defense) in 2012, they might see him that way.

@ P1

ARI already said they don't value Olt that highly as part of any package for Upton, probably because they already have a high-upside near-ready 3B prospect in Matt Davidson (ranked 33rd overall prospect by BA in '12 - 6th best 3B prospect), and are set for a long time at 1B with young Paul Goldschmidt and prospect Ryan Wheeler behind him. Unless a 3rd team that's looking for a 3B'man gets involved, Olt just isn't going to do that much to facilitate bringing Upton to TEX.

I'd pay for Young's plane ticket to make this happen but he has to approve the deal and unless Arizona promised him an unconditional release (which is quite possible) I don't think he would accept.

Another thought... probably way off-base but:
MIA gets Olt, Perez
ARZ gets Hechavarria, TEX prospect
TEX gets Upton

I feel like Andrelton Simmons is probably better than Hechavarria but it's the same idea.

"Bc they'd get Andrus."

Ok, fair enough. Why would Young waive his 10-and-5 rights to go to Arizona? And don't say "Bc they'd get Andrus."

....Yeah I don't think he's going to Arizona any time soon.

Elvis has become the real heart and soul of this team..........MY is a figure head!! Or bobble head???
