Forum > Martin Perez?

Is he the front runner for the 5th spot in the rotation? I know he stunk it up the last few starts against the A's but I thought he was doing very well in the earlier part of the season. I know a lot of yall want to sign Greinke but does that mean yal no longer think Perez can do the job? My dad doesn't believe in him anymore but I keep backing him up and telling my dad he is going to be a good starter for us. What do yall think?

He's only 21. There were no qualifying starters this year that are younger than 22. He's several years out of his prime. It's way, way too early to call him a bust.

That said, I wouldn't have particularly high hopes for him if he's the 5th starter next year.

I don't think wanting Grienke means we don't believe Perez can do the job. It's like a Hamburger...I can get one from McDonald's and it will do the job, but it wouldn't be as good as one from a 5 star restaurant.

Perez needs more time. He's still only 21. I don't believe he's a future ace, but I think he'll be a good mid rotation innings eater.

He was the youngest starting pitcher in the bigs last year, and when he was with Round Rock earlier in the season he was the youngest pitcher at AAA-level. He has the equivalent of only one full season at AAA-level (176 IP). At 21, most pitchers are at AA-level at the highest. Developmentally he wasn't ready when we called him up which is why he didn't do that great. He was only called up out of desperation because our other alternatives for the #5 spot weren't working out. Basing his value on last season is just wrong.
