Forum > Elvis Andrus as trade chip

Let's say the Rangers are in fact actively shopping Elvis Andrus? What MLB players are worth an Elvis trade straight up? What combination of players might be enough for the Rangers to say, "Ok" to shipping off our SS? Just wanting to guage the BBTIA opinion of the value of Elvis.

I've got to be honest- without Elvis on the team, my incentive for watching goes down. I think Elvis is one of the top 2-3 SS in the game and is still improving.

I don't care who you're trading him for, whether it is straight up or bundled with prospects, I just don't see us getting equivalent value in return.

I still think Elvis will improve his offense and defense. If we trade him now, I feel we would be selling low, contract situation aside, as i think he could be the best SS over the next decade. We have him and I don't want to watch that growth happen somewhere else.

If we end up trading for him, I sure as hell don't want it to be for JUpton. Price or King Felix is another story, but I would just assume roll with him at SS until he's old or retired.

NOTE: I'm biased and love to watch him play for my Rangers.

Would you be willing to part with Elvis as part of a deal for Price or Shields? I would, and I love Elvis.

I think if we're going to deal Elvis, it won't be in response to another player being available and we're using Elvis to get him. Instead, it will be that Elvis is available and others come to us with what they have to offer.

Agree

Given the chance, Profar will give you plenty of incentives.

Some probably won't agree with me on this, but Elvis is similar to a young Michael Young (with better range) is he not? Nobody is still making the argument to keep him around.

Would you be willing to part with Elvis as part of a deal for Price or Shields
Yes, but we've seen reports that Price and Felix won't be traded so I'd prefer to end that speculation before it takes over the boards. For some reason I've never seen what everyone else sees in Shields. I just don't care for the guy.

Instead, it will be that Elvis is available...
JD said Elvis isn't available. Elvis is available.

After reading that Elvis's camp is looking for 18 Million over 7 yrs I'm thinking Do it now! In 2 yrs (with the way contracts are going) signing him now could end up being a steal!! I think that a 23 yr old SS and a 20 yr old second baseman would look awesome next yr and for yrs to come.
Any trade talk about either Elvis or Profar would be a huge mistake, if only for the watchablity of this team! Watching that Kid Flash that glove for the past 3 seasons has been AWESOME and I can imagin seeing him in another jersey. Lets face it Josh and his mammoth hr's are gone I doubt we will be chanting NAP-O-LY ever again, Cruz has 1 more yr and he's gone, MY if he's back next yr will be his last and hopefully he be guarding the phone and not actually playing. Sure Beltre will be here for a few more seasons but even he is getting older. To get rid of "our" Jeter/ Cal/ insert name here would be one of those moves that we would sit here for yrs to come talking about how stupid we all were and how great he looks for "X".
I've read all the reasons why we should trade Elvis now but with out him on this team who would we watch?

This guy is suggesting the Cubs trade Starlin Castro for Upton because they have a SS prospect waiting in the wings:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/ct-spt-1109-rogers-gm-meetings--20121109,0,3734225.column

Main differences between us and them are that Castro is signed for a few more years than Andrus and has a higher ceiling so he has way more trade value, and their replacement candidate SS prospect is maybe a couple of years away instead of being ready to go right now like Profar is. If they offer Castro for Upton, let them. That's an overpayment on their part and in no way should we try to top it. Upton isn't worth it. He reminds me of A. Soriano - lots of talent but not necessariliy passionate about the game. ARI owner Ken Kendrick called him an "enigma" and "inconsistent" and manager Kirk Gibson benched him twice in June:

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/bj-upton-justin-upton-phenoms-disappointments-now-what/

As far as Andrus is concerned, there's a difference between actively shopping a player vs. sitting back and listening to offers. In the former case, it's Daniels initiating trade talks by phoning other GM's while the latter would consist of other GM's initiating things by contacting him first. It just comes down do we want what they have to offer more than they want what we have to offer, and I think ARI wants Andrus more than JD wants Upton so the onus is on them to come up with the initial parameters of a deal. They have to make the first move.
