Forum > Schoenfeld on ESPN

I've never cared much for his writing, but Schoenfeld wrote a little something that caught my eye today. He has an article about "five crazy ideas" for teams to pursue in free agency. He suggests the Rangers should pursue Melky Cabrera. Make of that whatever you will (I'm actually for it if the price is right on a one or two year deal), but here's what actually caught my eye...

Schoenfeld called MY "The Veteran Formerly Known As Michael Young". It's refreshing to see a national writer actually calling out Young for being washed up. Normally the ESPN writers and national media guys are too busy fawning over him for his leadership, grit, and hustle.

Yeah, really the only guys that call Young what he is are of the SABR variety. Schoenfield is about as tepid as they come, as he's the WAR bridge between ESPN and individuals who know nothing about WAR. If you subscribe to the free "Baseball Today" podcast with Eric Karabell and Keith Law, they rag on Michael Young like there's no tomorrow, which is actually pretty hilarious, because the truth often times is.

As for the Melky Cabrera situation, I also wouldn't be against bringing him on such that his contract isn't too expensive (maybe $8M-$9M AAV), but I'd also need to see a guy like Nelson Cruz move into the full-time DH role to facilitate such a move.
