Forum > Shields vs Price

Am i the only guy who would rather shields and his off speed stuff pitching FOR us
And have David Price and his fastball pitching AGAINST us

???

Actually, part of me would rather have Shields because I think he won't require quite as much in trade. And it has occurred to me, we hit Price better than most other teams seem to, and also Shields is better at holding runners, a big part of the Rangers' game. Those things are significantly less important than the pitcher's performance as a whole, but Shields is arguably a TORP himself (in 2011 he was tied for 15th highest fWAR and in 2012 he was 17th) just like Price.

Really, wouldn't you take either one of them if it didn't cost us Profar?

Yes you probably are the only person that would rather have the inferior pitcher. Now if you're saying that you'd rather have Shields if his cost was less then I can agree with that. But you're talking about 2-3 games vs Shields a season, maybe 4 if we meet in the playoffs. Even if he completely skunks us its still a very tiny sample size.

and the primary reason you don't want Shields, he is homer prone. averages 1.28 hr/9 on the road vs .74 hr/9 at home. Shields playing half his games in the ball park is more likely looking like the later then the former. Are you ready to give up something to get someone who could look like Derek Holland?

Shields is noticeably better than Holland. And though he gave up more HRs than Price, he's still near the top of the ground ball percentage (13th this year, right behind Price).

Good grief! Shields over Price? THINK!

I would rather have shields because he will still give good value to the Rangers as a strong number two, and wouldn't cost near as much as Price. A trade for Price hinders our future, while a trade for Shields doesn't. No body wants shields over Price just straight up, but in what we would save by going for Shields instead it would be worth it.

I don't know if that hinders the future. I mean a 26 y/o ace (or at least close to it) would BE a BIG part of the future. Like everyone else here, I'd rather not give up Profar, but I would say every other prospect is replaceable in some form.

For what it's worth, someone asked him about Texas on twitter a few months back and his response was something along the lines of - I'm already skinny enough. - referring to the Texas heat making him skinnier. Wasn't sure what to make of it.

Id be intersted in seeing Price's numbers vs. Shield's when pitching in the ballpark
