What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
From Jon Heyman, CBS (via Jamey Newberg, his own self): “[N]ot sure where it got started, but [the] Rangers aren’t trading Andrus this winter. They’ve had no Elvis talks and don’t plan to.”
Thanks for the note, NAWF. Thank you JD. This franchise is run by pitching and, yes, defense-minded people now. Kinsler's defense is beginning to scare them. Kinsler (and his still damp contract) has become the elephant in the room.
Elvis will be re-signed. It will be painful. But JD will get it done.
Thank you, baby Jesus!
I'd feel a lot better if the source was some other than Jon Hey(look at me)man.
Expect the unexpected. If you believe anything the media is telling you, you've fallen in to JD's trap.
He isn't going to be traded . . . unless he is. Right before the Rangers posted $50+ mil to negotiate with Darvish, one of the reporters (I can't remember if it was Heyman) reported that the Rangers were going to put in a low bid.
Do you really think JD is going to announce that he's desparate to part with Andrus?
Heyman is simply relaying what JD has said ...which is, they aren't discussing or considering trades of Andrus ....OR Kinsler ....OR Profar
(It's important to recognize that what JD said didn't distinguish any of the 3 over the others.)
Looks to me like the optimal time schedule would be to give Profar most or all of 2013, before they make a move, to allow him to adjust and make sure sure he's ready, before they figure out how to carve out room for him. And what they are doing seems to harbor that same thinking. But as for what might happen in 6 months or a year, they may not have decided yet..
All we know is, none of the three are being made available for now, and that would seem to indicate plans for all 3 to be in a Rangers uni in the spring.
...And RFan is right, they could alternately be masking their desire for a trade, we can't be sure.
Yet I believe they truly aren't going to trade any of the three this off-season, because I believe the timing is premature. But I admit, my sense of what they WILL do, is colored by my personal opinion of what I think they should do.
Yeah what The_Henchmen and RFan said.
@ David...the thing is, if you want to maximize Elvis value then you need to trade him sooner rather than later. If they wait a year to move him, they will be trading him for pennies on the dollar. I'm not for trading Elvis btw, just saying that now would be the best time to do it if you where on that side.
This quote was from a long time ago. This isn't breaking news, and it really doesn't mean anything.
An old news tidbit? I'll just retract my gratefulness to the newborn savior until I see Elvis on Opening Day at RBTiA.
JV "if you want to maximize Elvis value then you need to trade him sooner rather than later."
I don't think that's necessarily so.
1 - If a team gets Elvis in mid-season 2013, they get him for two stretch runs, two playoffs, and about a season-and-a-half of play. I'm not sure that keeping him from April to July will diminish the value all that much, and if someone is in dire need at that point with strong playoff chances, it might even make him more valuable than now.
2 - In addition, those few months allow a more reasonable assessment window for where Profar is on the readiness scale. If you wait, you may decide that Elvis is more valuable than whatever can be acquired.
3 - And it appears that JD thinks like I do on this matter. When it comes to assessing what waiting will do to trade value, he should know, and it doesn't appear he's in any hurry at all
I can believe they haven't had talks involving Elvis, but planning not to talk at all? I don't buy it. They'll at least talk about it to other teams and gauge their interest
David,I agree with you that trading Elvis at the deadline instead of now would definitely have its perks and might even field a better offer but if the Rangers are in contention, trading him midseason could do serious harm to the clubhouse and make for some awkward transitions as it would likely mean moving Kinsler back to 2nd base from the outfield and Profar over to short from 2nd (such a change preseason seems like the only way of getting Profar enough AB's to truly judge his readiness). I'm not saying it would be a season killer but JD seems like the kind of GM that would be pretty wary of moving one of his best ML players midseason and I just can't see him doing it. If Elvis is traded before the end of next season, I simply don't see a way it doesn't happen before spring training.
"Do you really think JD is going to announce that he's desparate to part with Andrus?"
I don't think JD is desperate to part with Andrus. I'm sure he knows Elvis could get something pretty good, but I see no reason why anyone would be desperate to get rid of one of the top shortstops in the league.
