Forum > Catching Proposition

I've read a lot about the Rangers going after J.P. Arencebia. Not a bad idea at all, but what about trying for D'Arnaud instead. He should be ready for the Majors this year. The Jays are looking for young controllable pitching and 2nd base help. What about a Robbie Ross and Michael Young Deal. Back to the team that drafted FACE and a young left handed starter for Toronto that had a really good rookie campaign.

Hahaha, yeah right. Alex Anthopoulos isn't that dumb. Why would he trade for Young?

Seriously, good thought, but unless the Blue Jays consider themselves dark horses next year, they'll be looking for a better 2B, and besides, the Rangers would probably have to eat Young's salary to get anyone to take him. They will demand more than Young and Ross for him, as he's pretty highly touted.

I'd much rather resign Nap.

Face isn't going anywhere.

And D'Arnaud has been considered the top catching prospect the last 2 years. The conversation would probably have to start off with someone like Martin Perez and go from there.

That being said, I would love the Rangers to get him if reasonable.

D'Arnaud is probably a top 20 prospect right now. This wouldn't even be close to starting a deal.

If you want to trade a pitcher for D'Arnaud it will cost you Perez and probably more. Also, before we see too many more Ross trade proposals, why do you want to trade our only reliable LH bullpen arm? Remember when Arthur Rhoades and Darren Oliver filled that role?

Hench,

I agree that it will probably cost more than Perez, I was just saying that he is the guy that makes any deal plausible. Toronto wants young pitching and he's our best pitching prospect and basically MLB ready.

Why does everyone seem to think Anthopolous is some kind of Jedi? It doesn't seem he has done much to help the Jays. He has already shown he likes having a huge veteran presence in the clubhouse (Vizquel) and with enough salary relief from JD I think he might take FACE. Also, Robbie Ross is just a first choice, there doesn't seem to be room for Perez on the Big League club with Holland and Harrison already in the rotation, so I would fine with a Perez swap for D'Arnaud.

October 23, 2012 at 2:07 PM | Unregistered CommenterEODPhil

It's not that we all think Anthropolous is a Jedi as much as we know he is going to value his top prospect much more than a Ross/MICHAEL YOUNG package. I'd be fine with a Perez for D'Arnaud package as well, I just think it will take a couple more small pieces from us to get that done.

But really, none of us know how willing the Jays are to trade him, how highly our scouts view him, what the market value for Perez is right now, or if JD already has a better option at Catcher lines up. It's a pipe dream but given the option, I'd do that trade 7 days a week and twice when the Cowboys play. It fills a huge need in our upper farm system.

Michael Young lessens the value of Robbie Ross in a trade. Ross really only has much value if the team you are trading him to sees him as a potential starter. Bullpen arms that aren't elite really have very little value. We got Koji two years ago for a failing 1b and a #5 starter/long man in the bull pen. And Koji was a better arm then Ross at the time.

Perez is probably the starter there since they have Agro King at 3b. But I doubt we would give up as much as it would take to get him based on the fact that he is potentially a two way catcher and also that he has had some injuries the last couple of years. I like the idea though.

Yeah, im thinking that we have to go after Arencibia with Kinsler but i would want something else like Lyon in the deal. Luckily this would do two things, replace a BP arm AND get rid of our profar playing where? problem.

October 23, 2012 at 3:16 PM | Unregistered CommenterYusoserious

Arencibia is a very expendable player on the Jays, but he is A) Young B) Has power (Which would be even more in RBiA) In a full season at RBiA he could easily put up 30 HR he does struck out a bit, about once a game, but that wouldn't be anything new for the Rangers!

He is cheap, young, and wouldn't take a lot to get in a trade.

October 23, 2012 at 3:31 PM | Unregistered Commenterfajita

Read Brian McCann might be available, I know he is just coming off shoulder surgery but he would be a nice pickup.

He is cheap, young, and wouldn't take a lot to get in a trade.

Because he's "expendable"? We had this debate on these boards a couple of months ago. You don't trade a great player/prospect just because it's a currently deep position on your roster. The Jays are obviously going to be motivated to move one of these two guys and keep Mathis around to mentor the other, but don't expect them to be blown over by any team saying "well you've got _____ ready to step in, so you should do us both a favor and get rid of the other guy." It shouldn't work like that.

October 23, 2012 at 4:02 PM | Unregistered CommenterThe_Henchmen

It shouldn't work like that and it doesnt. Plain and simple though J.P is wouth less than D'Arnaud. He is going to cost less. This isnt a top tier catcher we are talking about. He is going to cost some prospects, but it wouldn't be a large hit in the prospect department. Him being expendable makes the team more willing to take less than if he wasn't. If they had to have this guy we would be fetching a lot more, but they don't. So they can take a chance and trade him for some lower level prospects who have potential.

He has never posted more than 1.4 WAR nor has he ever been a daily player. He won't be cheap just because he is expendable, he will be cheap because he has never really been very good. He doesn' hit for high average or OBP he can just knock the ball a little, thats why he will be cheap in a trade.

October 23, 2012 at 5:21 PM | Unregistered CommenterFajita

J.P. is basically Mike Napoli, but cheap, younger, and with more potential. I say yes every day to this guy. Especially if we want to go after Grienke this will be an easy way to cut come corners on payroll.

October 24, 2012 at 8:21 AM | Unregistered CommenterFajita

Arencebia for Profar and grimm. Satisfies our getting rid of our overstocking of the infield, we get a catcher who projects highly for the next 10 years. Grimm may turn out to be a good pitcher but we lose nothing if Arencebia pans out.

October 24, 2012 at 11:30 AM | Unregistered CommenterT.O.

Holy crap. Arencebia for Profar and Grimm? Are you sure we aren't going to have to throw in Yu and some cash also? Ate we talking fantasy baseball or real baseball here?

October 24, 2012 at 12:08 PM | Unregistered CommenterGod

Look around...good middle infielders are a dime a dozen. Good catchers? Not so common. We haven't had a good regular catcher since Pudge was here over a DECADE ago but we have infielders coming out of our ears. Your damn skippy, tell Grimm and Profar to start packing!

October 24, 2012 at 12:16 PM | Unregistered CommenterT.O.

T.O., did somebody forget to get your popcorn ready?

October 24, 2012 at 12:33 PM | Unregistered CommenterMike G.

T.O. is just trying to get a reaction. Nobody that reads this board is stupid enough to trade the # 1 prospect in baseball/ a guy that scouts have touted as a future MVP candidate AND Justin Grimm for some spare catcher. Grimm for Arencebia could be an even trade though.

October 24, 2012 at 1:35 PM | Unregistered CommenterATX

Grim for JP would be a deal i make 10/10 times.

October 24, 2012 at 4:08 PM | Unregistered CommenterFajita

Arencebia for me is just not that interesting. Players with a sub 300 OBP make me go meh, especially if we have to give up something of any value to get them. Maybe he pushes his walk rate by 50% and gets up to an over 300 OBP or has a very good BABIP season. I'm not that interested in keeping Soto around either, but at least the prospect cost for him has already been paid.

October 24, 2012 at 4:24 PM | Unregistered CommenterJKolar

JP is basically i younger cheaper version of Naps...with OBP just a little lower, but I would assume it would go up at RBiA, and maybe this new hitting coach will know what he is talking about too!

October 24, 2012 at 5:41 PM | Unregistered CommenterFajita

JP and Nap aren't a comparison. Napoli is twice the player Arencibia is. He takes walks and hits for more power.

October 24, 2012 at 7:12 PM | Unregistered Commentereric reining

The difference between 270 and 350 OBP is a huge deal.
