Forum > Rosenthal: Upton Will Be Traded
...thus, per your assessment, making him superior. Jim, buddy, shut the fuck up. I can't help but feed you, as everything you post is so hilariously stupid that it warrants some ridiculing.
I don't necessarily want to see Elvis go, but you absolutely have to extract as much value as possible given the situation. It's just not a wise business decision to hold onto Elvis through his prime "trade value years" with the hope that he may happen to choose to stay in Texas once FA hits. There is so much more that goes on behind the scenes than any of us could ever hope to know; surely no one thinks that JD & Co. haven't given Elvis/Boras a proposal for a pre-FA extension. As many have previously guessed, that likely went down prior to the Kinsler extension.
If you can move Elvis for someone to help fill the Hamilton-sized void in the 3-hole, you do it. Furthermore, if you can accurately interpret statistics and not literally pull shit out of your ass, you see that Upton does just that.

Pretty much this. 100%.
I think we can all agree Elvis > Kinsler. And I also think we can all agree that Ian @5/$70M > Elvis @8+/$150M+.
You have to believe that if Elvis had accepted the proposed extension JD offered, that Ian Kinsler would be finding a new home. It's pretty basic math. Profar would have to have learned how to play 2nd base, pure and simple. Because Profar as a 2nd baseman would have been better than Kinsler as a 2nd baseman. But since that didn't happen, the franchise must move forward. It just so happens that the franchise's timeline has brought us to the point where Josh Hamilton is leaving at the same time.
We all love Elvis. Most of us probably love Elvis more than Ian. I'm not one of those people, but I understand why the majority feel that way. This is strictly business. It's all mathematics.

Seriously I hope we sign Upton. His 17 HRs and 67 RBI will go a long way to replace Josh. But his defense sux--Oh that's ok-just sign him. JOIN THE UPTON LICKFEST. Not a good guy in the clubhouse-no problem-throw a contract extension at him. We know how that worked for Kins.
P.S. BTW, no truth to thr rumor that Kins uses a 9 iron in batting practice to help flatten out his swing.

Is "lickfest" really a thing now?

I love how people actually question why I'm not congenial to this fucking idiot.

YWhy trade a quality, like Andrus, when signing his older brother as a free agent is an easier fix with nearly equal talent. All this is based on Hamilton not returning, which is not a sure thing. A better temp fit if Hamilton does leave is Tori Hunter, which would be cost effective without loss of talent.
les
Justin Upton and BJ Upton are not "nearly equal talents." Justin Upton is younger and has been much, much better up to this point in his career. Hunter is 38. He had a great 2012 but I seriously doubt he repeats that in 2013.
Not sure why I'm wasting my time, but Jim wrote: "Seriously I hope we sign Upton. ... just sign him ...throw a contract extension at him."
Thank you for further highlighting your lack of knowledge as it relates to Upton. Texas wouldn't need to "sign" Upton or "throw a contract extension at him" b/c Upton is already under control for multiple years.
Jim wrote: Murphy is "...equal to [Upton] on all stats PLUS Murphy is better on defense..."
Murphy's career OPS (at age 31) : .801 and career wRC+ of 108 (while primarily a platoon OFer);
Upton's career OPS (at age 25): .832 and career wRC+ of 116 (while hitting both LHPs and RHPs).
And Upton has been consistently rated as an above-average defender;
But don't let the facts get in the way of a good rant.

Upton LED the MAJORS in ERRORS in 2010 with 10. T-E-N

Jim - So you are comfortable calling Elvis a below average defensive SS based on error totals right? Tied for sixth worst in the league among qualified SS.

bUT Upton LED THE MAJORS. They also play different positions-thought you would have known that.

Outfielders are a dime a dozen. Shortstops? Not so much. I wouldn't trade elvis for upton straight up. Ridiculous trade scenarios being proposed. Unless of course the Baseball anti christ, scott boras, holds out for a significant above market contract for elvis. Then get what you can.
bagofrocks
OH-but we need Upton. Afterall he had 17 Hrs last year and thats not all. He had 67 RBI in only 554 Plate Appearences. And if thats not enough-he led the MAJORS in errors [10] in 2019. Timely hitting-surefire defensense-clubhouse angel--WTF are we waiting on.??? With him and 'the Kins' on the corners we are SET.

I've got headshots lined up on Jim and Tex Baseball as we speak.
Can someone give me the go ahead?

I hope JD signs Upton soon. World Series here we come if he does.

Hi, so I'm new to this board. I like baseball. But I'm new to how baseball and business work together. I've learned a lot in my 2+ years as a Rangers fan. But I have a few questions. Like why does Ron Washington continue to bat Ian Kinsler leadoff? Hasn't he noticed his low batting average? And seriously, all he does is try to hit home runs every at bat, which usually end up as pop outs. He sucks. Michael Young though, he's good. He's had a good batting average basically his entire career. This last year he had a bad season, but he'll bounce back. He's too good not to make the adjustments. Plus he's such a leader. We need him badly or the clubhouse will collapse and the Rangers will find themselves at the bottom of the division.
We need to trade Ian Kinsler. Maybe Seattle would be willing to give us Felix Hernandez for Kins straight up? Elvis Andrus is good. He only has two years left on his contract? Why won't the front office just sign him to a longterm deal? Even though Scott Boras is his agent, you know he'd accept it. He smiles so much, which means he'd take a below market offer to stay in Arlington.
And what's this Justin Upton talk? I hear everywhere that he's a clubhouse cancer and that he doesn't try hard. Surely fans know a lot more about what goes on in the clubhouse than the actual players and front office people within the industry. I mean, I know he's produced 16.4 fWAR over the last 4 years, but this last year he had a low batting average and didn't have many RBI and made a lot of errors, which means he sucks. You have to be some kind of idiot to want that type of player on the Rangers.
How about Derek Holland? He's inconsistent. We should dump him. I know he had that stomach virus which sapped a month worth of pitching, and probably had something to do with why he was so erratic down the stretch, but he's way too immature to ever turn into a good starter. We should trade him to Colorado for Carlos Gonzalez.
Also, we need to fire Ron Washington. He's lost the clubhouse. The players hate him. He's the reason why we lost all those games down the stretch. I remember when I started becoming a fan when they went to the World Series in 2010, and then the next year when I tuned in during the World Series I saw the Rangers were playing, but that was just his players that took him there. Since the Rangers collapsed this year that has to mean it wasn't any of the players' faults; it has to be his fault.
This team sucks. We need to re-sign Josh Hamilton, trade Kins for King Felix, sign Zach Greinke, trade Holland for Cargo, maybe see if the Giants would give up Posey for Nelson Cruz? We should try that. Oh, and let's trade Justin Grimm for David Price, and then try to pursue Cliff Lee. Do you think they'd accept a guy like Engel Beltre?

Get some rest son. You seem tired.
Tex Baseball
eric you are making my head hurt. If JD pulled off any of that he would be the MV Executive for the next 4-5 years. Kins is likely gone because he is talented and he has a contract. When MY is dumped Kins is going to cry. Time to move him and avoid that problem all together.
upton is a talent and would benefit by playing in the AL and arlington. After the Oakland trade though no way I trade Elvis for him. diamondbacks have a history of trading for less than market value.
rainag
Eric,
That was priceless. Had me going until I reached the signature.

OK... I'm really concerned here... We're talking about XheadcaseX Upton (your choice) to replace Josh, but we keep comparing, in this case, Justin, to Murphy?
I've reread the thread, but I can't get your 2+2 to equal your 4,297,218,275 you get for Upton. I still get a big negative number whenever an Upton is plugged into the equation.
Ed Looney

Didn't say he was superior--just equal to him on all stats PLUS Murphy is better on defense.
