Forum > The DBack/A's/Fish trade

I can understand this trade from the A's side. You mean we can get a useful player for a 22 year old 3b prospect that can't hit and a SS who is probably a utility infielder? I can understand it from the Marlins side, We can get rid of Heath Bell for less then half of his contract.

I just can't understand the DBacks side. We're trading Chris Young for Heath Bell and Cliff Pennington. I'd try and argue that Chris Young is worth more then both of them together plus a little bit. Young isn't great but Bell is an old RP with declining stats and stuff. Pennington is a UIF with a great glove and a bad bat for a UIF. To me it almost seems like you could get both of those off of the FA market cheap, unless the Dodgers go nuts again signing crappy journeymen to multiyear contracts. If you want a SS who can't hit I bet you could have gotten Brendan Ryan on the FA market for next to nothing. And for less then the DBacks are paying for Bell you probably could have gotten Koji or another good setup pitcher.

I just wonder why the DBacks basically look like they made two terrible trades today.

The rumor is that the Dbacks will try to flip Bell for A-Rod. Not sure I buy it. Mostly I don't think A-Rod would waive his NTC to go to Arizona unless he is more mad at Girardi than he is letting on. But the Dbacks are interested.

Bell to the Yankees? Wouldn't they rather re-sign Soriano (if he opts out)? They also may have Rivera coming back, and they still have Robertson, etc.

Meh, whatever. As long as A-Rod's jersey doesn't say "Texas" I guess I'm fine with wherever he is.

I highly doubt Soriano opts out of $14M. He won't be able to earn that much in one year on the open market, unless he'd rather get a couple more years of security at much less AAV.

Also don't know why the Yankees would be interested in Heath Bell. Dude doesn't exactly have projectable AL stuff.
