Forum > What I'd tentatively like to see in 2013
--James Shields for TORP but I just hope Tampa will be reasonable about the Rangers' offer.
--Goodbye Hamilton, Goodbye FACE.
--I like Murphy but he's a sell-high guy to me.
--It sucks to lose Elvis but if you can get a TORP or Justin Upton I guess you gotta do it.
--Maybe call Minnesota about a Span/Burton package.
--Or just sign BJ Upton which would be simpler.
--I want Koji back. He's not a guy who relies on velocity so I think he'll age well.
--I wonder if Haren will take a low/short deal to prove he's healthy.
--The team should make a reasonable effort to sign Napoli, then Shoppach, in that order.

Has everyone forgotten Bourn? Anyhow, a few things I'd like to see:
At catcher, I feel 1 or 2 of the following will be on the roster next season: Napoli, Soto, Arrencibia, and Shoppach.
As for Elvis, if they do choose to trade him, I'd prefer it be to TB for Price or Shields, but I suppose Justin Upton is a possibility as well.
Even if they do trade for 1 of those pitchers, I would like to see them at least kick the Greinke tires if no other reason than to drive Anaheim's price up
I believe they will talk with Swisher, Hunter, BJ Upton as a short term solution to "beef up" OF numbers lost by Hamilton's departure. As much as I hate to say it, I would prefer Swisher since he can play1st as well.
As far as BP pitchers are concerned, they are a crap shoot every season, great one, bad the next. but at least try and bring Koji back as he sure was a stud down the end there.
But have no clue what they will actually do. the first couple of moves/signs we see will queue us in on whether they are approaching it from a retooling or rebuilding state.
But I agree with most everyone else here that 1 or both of Young and washington must be gone.
Who I feel will be gone for sure, but again, just guessing: Hamilton, Adams, and Young. If Cruz or Kinsler could bring back somethign decent in return, explore this for sure.
New players I see as a possibility: Price, Shields, 1 of the Upton bros, Bourn, Hunter, Swisher, Arrencibia, Shoppach, Greinke, Haren (low incentive type contract)....and many players Jedi daniels has in store.

@Joseph
I just think the Braves will splurge to keep Bourn. Huge contract upcoming. I do like Arencibia through trade, and Peter Gammons recently said the Rangers might pursue that. However I think Andrus may be too much to give up for Shields, and in 2015 when Andrus is a FA it's not like Tampa Bay will be able to keep him anyway. Kinda doubt they'd trade Price for just a few seasons of Elvis.

I'm not sure both Profar and Olt will be ready for the Opening Day roster. They might need everyday playing time in order to be effective, so I wouldn't be surprised if at least one of them starts the season at Round Rock. I don't know about Shoppach for our catcher; he's certainly above average, but I think the front office should do everything it can to re-sign Napoli. He's the best option out there in the free agent market. Even though 2012 was a down year for him, he still provided good power and production from the catching position that wasn't matched by many other teams.
Kinsler 2B
Andrus SS
Beltre 3B
Upton RF
Cruz DH
Murphy LF
Napoli C
Moreland 1B
Martin CF

A few months ago a rumor was floated that someone in the Rangers' office (I think Thad, but not sure) dreamed on an IF of Beltre, Ian, Elvis, and Profar. I suppose this entails Ian at 3B. This both concerns and intrigues me, but as it's basically hearsay there's no reason to think this is the direction they're headed in. Nevertheless, it's an interesting idea.
In any event, assuming the above doesn't happen (which I assume would include Beltre moving to 1B), I don't know that the Rangers have a long-term solution at 1B. Mitch has been inconsistent, and I think this was his potential breakout year. I'd like to see the Rangers explore options at 1B, in addition to figuring out the COF situation. I'd also like to see them go after Greinke, but I'm not holding my breath that they'll get him.

Andy:
What is interesting about moving the best defensive 3b in baseball to 1b?? And Kins numbers at 3b would be anemic.
Carlos
i want both upton's in rangers uniforms next year. i've seen both of there names kicked around in several places on the internets, but i imagine that their names have been discussed as a package within the organization. realistically, what would it take to make it happen? bj will take $$$ and justin seems to be available in trade, no? obviously this makes murph and cruz expendable. i picture the rest of the league having a big 'oh S' moment when its announced that the rangers have aquired both uptons to man the corners for the next 5+ seasons.
count me in the rather see kins go than elvis, but i am willing to trust the front office here when it comes to reading the long term tea leaves.
an additional catcher is obviously needed. i would be on board with a splash move for the catcher of the future (carlos santana, salvador perez) or the gap filling vet (shoppach)
darvish, holland, harry locked into the rotation
perez, ogando, robbie ross battling for the 4th and 5th spots or as trade chips.
neffy and colby as midseason additions (hopefully)
this leaves room for either a bonafide torp or a jd bounce back vet gamble, or both.
i think koji has gotten comfortable here and the front office will make a competitive bid for him. japanese endorsement opportunities might tip the scales in our favor.
ss - elvis
2b - profar
3b - beltre
rf - j upton
lf - bj upton
dh - david ortiz? nellie cruz? d murph?
1b - mitch / ???
c - soto / new guy
cf - gentry / martin
i really like this lineup everywhere but dh and 1b, but those should be the easiest positions to upgrade.
i'm kinda rambling now, but the gist of the post is why settle for one upton when we could have both!
ronald
Ronald, I almost went there on both Upton brothers, but backed off. Would be interesting for sure.

Can someone please give me a rational explanation as to why/how the Rangers would/could move Ian Kinsler and his 5-year/$75M extension?
Dude has almost no trade value coming off a down year, and with Elvis walking after 2014, Profar would be our only viable middle infielder. Take the future into account here, not just one bad season from Kinsler.
eric reining
@Carlos: I'm not sure Beltre will be the best defensive 3B in a couple years. I'm not saying that Ian is the answer at 3B, as he hasn't really played the position, but I could see Beltre at 1B in his last couple years. Maybe.
Andy
I understand giving Beltre some time at 1st since he's about to enter his 15th season at 3rd, but Olt is the only other guy I want over there. At least until Gallo and Juremi Profar are called up :)
I also like the idea of getting both Upton Bros. because I think Murphy is due for a regression and BJ is still only 28. From a personal angle they might keep each other engaged and motivated by playing together, since both have been accused of having that Hamilton-esque quality in the past.
Jondar
Reports on Gallo's defense are lukewarm. He may not last at 3B. But if he comes anywhere near his ceiling offensively, he could play anywhere.
Andy

Move Beltre to first, Elvis to third, let Profar play SS and keep Kinsler where he is at, with Martin, Cruz, Gentry and Murphy no need to sell the farm for outfeild bat. Swap morland for bullpen help, Ogando can start along with Darvish, Holland, Harrison four good young pitchers at relatively low salaries, use savings from hamilton and young and build the best bullpen money can buy and a true DH.
