Torii Hunter had seven hits yesterday. He has been a Rangers-killer throughout his career. He's in his free-agent season. Any interesting in making him part of the Rangers in 2013?

Sure, we will need a 38 year old outfielder next year.

That window closed. I love Torii, but if we're going to sign a FA outfielder it shoul be Upton or Swisher. I'd be ok with a Vlad-esque deal but he'll command more than that.

He also cant do the robot and I believe that it's essential for all of the OF to successfully perform the robot!
Torri Hunter does not compute!

Normally I'd say absolutely not. However, we do seem to have amazing luck finding former Angels and using them to destroy their old teams. So, I wouldnt be supper disappointed if we get him, but i'd put him way down on our priority list for this offseason.

Only for a couple years at best, though you could do worse as a stopgap until, hopefully, someone with power makes his way up through the farm. He wouldn't be my first choice, but you could do worse.

Except, where would you put him? Do you try to find a buyer for Murphy or Cruz? I don't think I'd want any of those 3 manning CF.

We also may call up Beiras next year, from what I've seen. So we don't want to clog up the OF pipeline with Bearas likely up next year, and Guzman and/or Mazara probably in 2014.

October 1, 2012 at 2:15 PM | Unregistered CommenterTxball

No way, Beras is only gonna be 18/19 and hasn't played a full year in organized ball.

October 1, 2012 at 2:32 PM | Unregistered CommenterDavid

Txball, I don't know if you entered the Twilight Zone, but there is no way Beras even sniffs AA next year and I'd say Guzman and Mazara are looking at September callups in 2014 at the absolute earliest. They aren't guys I'm worried about blocking right now.

Joey Butler is probably the only guy left on the AA and AAA rosters that has a legit chance of logging any time at the major league level next year and I use th eterm "legit" very loosely. Borbon is probably gone this year and let's hope Beltre gets back on track.

I like Hunter as a player, but I seem to remember him saying something about not wanting to play in Texas or for the Ranger's. I have a hard time seeing a place for him here at the contract price he'll probably get.

Guys i think the real question is can any of these prospects or possible free agents properly perform the robot in the outfield?

October 1, 2012 at 2:55 PM | Unregistered CommenterJoshiellarreal

I think we have some roster issues this off season. 1 starting OF under contract, though we probably go to arb with Murphy. I don't think we want to hand CF off to a Gentry/Martin platoon so I think we will go CF shopping. We need to get another catcher since Napoli is a FA and if someone offers him over 3 years I bet we let him go. Hamilton and Napoli leaving would put a huge dent into our offense. The other roster issue to my mind is we have to ditch Young to someone for nothing and pay some salary relief. IF we lose Hamilton our best bet for fielding a successful offense is to upgrade Young and split the offensive load between Hamilton's replacement and Young's.

I do think we're about one starting pitcher short. I don't think we can fix it all. I think we are dependent on at least one major young piece stepping up and making an impact.

We could move MY to OF to replace Josh's bat. Heck, I bet he could play catcher and would easily surpass Napoli, and not block Beiras too. That is the beauty of having a HOF caliber super utility player.

October 1, 2012 at 3:22 PM | Unregistered CommenterTxball

I know Torii lives in North Texas but as long as Young and Cruz are here (and I don't see either being traded), there is no place for him.

If Ham walks, grab BJ Upton and resign Napoli. I read JP Arencibia might be available via trade, if Nap walks.

It all boils down to whether or not Elvis is traded which I think would be very drastic and unlikely. So Kinsler moves to LF. Trade Murphy while his stock is high - maybe to Tampa with prospects in return for James Shields.

James Shields is a FA

Some good, thoughtful responses (as usual for this site), thanks. According to Fangraphs, Hunter is having a near-career season - offense, defense and baserunning - at age 37. And that play he made to kill Cruz at 2B in Frioday's game was a thing of beauty. If the Rangers move Nelly, I'd be comfortable going to war with Hunter in RF, as least some of the time. Just a thought.

October 1, 2012 at 5:59 PM | Unregistered CommenterNAWF

I'd say no possible way to Torii Hunter.

We already have Murphy, Gentry, Cruz and Leonys Martin, assuming Josh Hamilton walks. Combine that with with the possibility of Elvis Andrus getting moved for Josh Hamilton's replacement bat, and you're more likely to be moving one of the four above than adding to the list.

Also, for all the Mazarra/Guzman/Beras talk, those guys are all teenagers. Guzman and Mazarra played in the Arizona Rookie League this year, so even if you assume they'll start next year in full season low-A ball (Hickory), they probably won't be big-league ready until 2015-2016, at the earliest.

"James Shields is a FA"

Nope, he has $9M and $12M team options the next two years and Tampa would be stupid to decline the options when they KNOW he is a great trade piece (and a quality pitcher, btw). I really like Shields. It was reported the Rangers and Rays discussed a trade in July so maybe there is groundwork in place.

October 1, 2012 at 6:59 PM | Unregistered CommenterJondar

$9M is quite expensive for the Rays. I'm expecting them to move two of Shields/Price/Hellickson this offseason. Those three could reap a ton of value in return, and they will be in the market for some offense.

What's with this notion of moving Kins to leftfield? Is a .258 hitter really what you want in left? Who says he can even play the outfield? Good Grief

Might as well start the offseason talks now, season is over in 4 days

Shields' price continues to rise. Tonight vs. Orioles: CG, 2 H (infield single, solo homer by Chris Davis), 0 BB, 15 K, 106 pitches. Second 1-0 loss for him since the break (the other was against Yu, I was there). ERA at 1.99 since the trade deadline. Incredible.

October 2, 2012 at 8:48 PM | Unregistered CommenterJondar

JD. Don't lock any more of these dudes up. Kinsler-awful, Holland-undependable. The As are young and hungry. The Rangers are complacent. Unbelievable that we are playing for the division tomorrow.

October 2, 2012 at 11:47 PM | Unregistered Commenterranger1

Josh Hamilton's replacement bat should be fairly cheap.
Hell, there's probably 5 or 6 of them already in the dugout.
If he wouldn't throw the damn things into the stands, maybe he wouldn't need a replacement.

HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT IT?

October 3, 2012 at 12:47 AM | Unregistered CommenterTheNatural

They need to make Michael Young the bench coach, so he and Washington can hug on each other after each win in public! No you don't go out and get the washed up Torii Hunter. Some people have a short memory. He was to good to play here. He is a prick! We need to go out and make a block buster trade and bring in Carlos Gonzales of the Rockies!

Angels are reportedly planning on declining Santana and Haren's 2013 options to be able to resign Grienke... are we interested?
