Forum > can a team pay a player on a game-to-game basis?
I don't know the CBA/union rules, but I don't know why not. What I do know, is there is absolutely no chance in heaven or hell or anywhere in the middle that an agent would consider it for even a second. Agents want the most money guaranteed for the longest number of years regardless of performance. Incentivized deals have become limited in the new CBA (for instance, many of the perks Pujols got are not permissible now). Doing a game-by-game basis would be in the "ridiculous offer." category, and likely completely insult a player.
However, it would incentivize another 1+ WAR game from guys like Hamilton... I would love to see a contract year contract completely incentivized based on fWAR.

In my opinion, contracts like that would do more harm than good. We already know guys are likely to play through injuries... Moreland with his wrist, Kinsler with his ankle, Hamilton with his groin. Now imagine if they were paid only when they played.
No thanks.

How about a contract with a games played incentive. Not enough where Josh would would risk hurting his career, but enough to where he works hard at staying healthy.
For example: $18 million per year with $1 million bonuses at 130, 140, and 150 games played

it would make sense, especially for an injury-prone player like hamilton. could the rangers pay him 150,000 per game instead of 20 million to pay 80 games?
