What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
I'm ok with Toronto getting Darvish. Right now, at least, Toronto is not a threat to the Rangers' position as two-time defending American League champs. Think how worse it would be if LAA, NYY, Boston, or Detroit landed Darvish. Such an addition (if he pans out) would pose a clear and immediate threat to the Rangers. So, all things considered, I'm fine if Toronto gets Darvish. It could be worse....
It ain't over 'til it's over. But if they do get him and beat us with him in the ALCS in 2012, I bet your opinion will be vastly different.
No doubt. But what if the other teams got him. I'm not sure we're even playing in the ALCS.
I don't know guys it really seems like all the other teams are getting better and the rangers are just stayng pat.
Mike & Chooserer,
As it stands, I'd be inclined to agree. However, I think Jon got us here by adhering to a set of ideals and principles. Now, if the organization did not feel like C.J. was worth pursuing? Then I accept that. Hell, I actually agree with them. Apparently they feel that it just might be "addition by subtraction". I personally am content to roll "as is". I think a bad financial decision just to make a move, could cripple this franchise from making "the right move" when the opportunity presents itself. Roll as is. If we are in the mix in August? Make a move for the right, soon to be FA pitcher and / or bat to put us over the top.
We are still head and shoulders more talented than every team in the AL, so even if one of LAA, NYY, BOS, or DET got Darvish I wouldn't be too concerned. We just need to concentrate on how to beat inferior NL opponents in the Series and winning the All Star game this year.
I'd prefer if the Angels didn't get him. That would make me a sad panda.
If/when Toronto gets Darvish it is a direct threat to the Rangers or the best location for him outside of Texas because of the change in CBA. Explanation: Now 5 playoff slots, that could now go to Toronto over the Rangers for a wild card slot or, here where it gets interesting, Yu is total success and keeps Boston, New York or Tampa from making the playoffs over the Rangers due to Yu's success over those three teams which Toronto faces about 1/4 their schedule. That is about as positive a spin you can put on not getting Darvish; the enemy of my enemies is my friend.
Update Sunday 12.18.11: 4 teams bid. The Cubs make a low ball bid just in case no one else bids because everyone beliefs it would be high. New York makes a realistic but not overwhelming bid. Toronto goes all out and makes a bid in the high 40s. Now it is reported that the final bid is over 51 mil. Under the belief Yu was/is headed from the Far East to the Far North, it now DOES NOT ADD UP. Knowing hoe tight lip ed JD is, all these 4 factors: NY, Cubs, Jays bids did not top 49 mil ( although the Jays bid may be under stated ) that leaves only 1 BIDDER STANDING, guess who?
Question. How does Toronto go high on Darvish bid when a few years back they didn't spend the money on Halladay. They traded him off because they couldn't pay him? Why not make that commitment on the best pitcher in the game? Now theyre gambling huge money on an unknown????
I agree Bubbav. Doc wasn't exactly an unknown quantity. He was great in Toronto. Perhaps that is what is driving the "reported" high bid from Toronto. Doubling down and trying to make up for Doc.
Because it is 2 seasons ago a better budget and LAA cleared 20+ mil for Toronto. They have the budget space, which was reported back in early November. The Rangers, especially if they want to sign several long extensions did not. But because Toronto wanted to clear that budget, the Rangers have Napoli. So another rational is if Toronto wanted that space, knowing like the Rangers did, Yu would be available for 2012, the Rangers gained Nap. An excellent trade off if you ask me. We will know though by Tuesday anyway what truly was the bid and who has Yu. It was also reported that Toronto would gain a #1 or #2 pitcher. In that same report, it was reported that the Rangers would gain the most in obtaining Yu, but ironically would also lose the least if they did not obtain Darvish.
I'm just ready for the Darvish thing to be over with so we can move on with our off season. If we get him, great! I'll be enthused. If we don't, that's fine too. We can figure it out another way. But I'm just tired of everything being on hold to wait and see who wins the bid.
I beliive Halladay told Toronto he would not resign with them. That's why he was dealt.
