What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
I'm not saying I like this idea, but I like it better than trading Neil Ramirez and Mike Olt for a really good #3 pitcher.
I don't really want to trade either of them for Gio. His marginal increase in value over whoever starter #5 is right now, isn't worth it.
olney was saying that we would have to give up perez for sure to get him...and i dont know if thats a great idea...
The gio-love needs to tamper down a bit and realize his ERA is aritificially lowered quite a bit playing half his games in Oakland, with the deep park, cold air and spacious foul territory. Away gsmrd lasy year, he had a 3.62 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP.
Matt Harrison's away splits are 2.99 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP.
to me going after gio is just the FO way of saying "we F***ed up not going hard after cahill, who AZ basically got for nothing".
DC - I am still scratching my head over the Cahill deal. Billy Beane may not want to do business with Texas, but he would to benefit the farm. I advocated a trade for him, but yet we did nothing. That is one young, talented pitcher. But, everytime I want to just wail on J.D., I have to pull the reigns and realize who got us here, albeit unconventionally. Here we go again on the JD magic carpet.
not just that, you gotta look at intangibles. like ppl are saying about gio. look, gio is good, he's very good, and he's getting better. but he gets lit the F up at the ball park. Cahill, i swear to god pitched a near 1 hitter every time he pitched in arlington. One of my fave games 2 yrs ago was the epic Colby Cahill battle where they both almost went all the way (Cahill pulled in the 8th Colby pulled after the end of the 9th) won in 12 i believe.... good stuff.
Cahill is so young and so good. And went for little. You want a staff of young studs? He'd have completed it.for little. I am still pissed off about missing that option.
Gio is not worth what they want plain and simple. I would rather have ogondo in the rotation as I believe his ceiling is far higher anyway.
Holland; Lewis; Ogando; Harrison; Feliz............is Gio really going to be an upgrade over these guys? Feliz of course is a wild card as we don't know where he is going to be mentally. I would prefer Danks if we are going to try and trade for a SP........but I would not give up the farm to do so. Danks and Konerko would be a good one......Konerko may only have 2-3 years left but in the RBPIA he could drop some bombs.........make Moreland part of the trade and once Konerko is regulated to DH possibly make Mike Olt into a 1B man!!
I'm not sure Gio is a huge upgrade, but he is a good lefty, which is good for our park. It would also allow us to move Ogando to the pen and not lose any more prospects. That being said, I don't want to give up Perez unless it's for a bonafide ace. Not sure Gio is that.
Gio does not replace a number 5 starter (Lewis), because the current number 5 starter goes to the bullpen and replaces a WAR zero pitcher like Lowe (check his WAR) or Feldman (check his WAR). Hence his incremental value is more than when you compare him to our number 3 or 4 or 5 starter.
I thnk Cahill's going to be either a constant DL visitor his entirecareer, or his elbow is going to explode and he'll be just a memory.
someone mind explaining the angst over not getting Cahill and some of the love for Gio cause I'm still trying to see how they slots anywhere above Feldman in this rotation. Sure Cahill won 18 games in 2010 and had a sub 3 ERA but just looking at the rest of his stats seems to indicate he's mid to back end of the rotation candidate on most teams. His K/9 ratio is too low and BB/9 ratio too high and he has a career FIP over 4. Gio is a little better but to get him your trading high potential to get a guy who would probably be fighting with Harrison for the 4th spot in the rotation and I think I'd put my money on Harrison. Then if Feliz blossoms this year Gio falls behind him as well and drops completely out of the rotation.
I just don't see how trading away anyone from our farm system for that kind of production make this team better? Please someone tell me what I am missing here.
You're not missing anything, arp. We have easily one of the best farms in the world, and we shouldn't be blowing it up for guys that will add like 1 or 2 wins. That's not how the Rangers got to where they are now, and that's not how we're going to win the World Series.
arp - and Gio consistently walks 1 guy every 2 innings - this isn't a 1 season aberration - it's proven over his entire career. We don't need that - we already got one of those in Feliz lolz.
I agree and Gio has been pitching in that ridiculous Oakland ballpark, I feel he would be a launching pad in rbpia.
