What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
Just saw this over at mlbtraderumors.com:
An NL executive heard that the Rangers have interest in signing Prince Fielder and trading Mitch Moreland to the Rays for Wade Davis. A person with knowledge of Texas' plans say neither scenario is close to being done, however. The Rangers checked in with Scott Boras about Fielder during the winter meetings.
The Rangers also have interest in Casey McGehee of the Brewers to play first base, which would still allow them to make the Moreland-for-Davis swap.
How is Wade Davis an upgrade over anyone we currently have starting? I'm not seeing it.
And we've been linked to Prince a zillion times. I'm not saying that we definitely won't be pursuing him, but at this point I would be a little bit surprised if we did. Not that I'd complain, of course...who wouldn't want him at 1b in RBiA?
Pardon my skepticism about this, please, but this to me doesn't seem particularly likely.
I have no intrest in neither one. Never have been impressed with Wade Davis I would have to have a lot more for Moreland than him. Also I don't see the McGhee deal as anything that would happen but he can play either corner but how much would it take to get him Moreland is a lot cheaper option.
Either this is a 100% fabrication, which is likely, or JD is really working the poker face in this trade season. I wouldn't put it past him with the latter, but it seems like they'd get someone a little better than Wade Davis if they are going to trade Moreland (and sign Fielder). I figured they'd go hard after Danks or maybe Garza if they wanted to acquire a pitcher via trade.
I saw that too. Wade Davis does not move my needle at all, especially if that is our only pitching move and we miss out on Darvish. He was not a dominant ground ball pitcher to start with, like Shields is, and the last three seasons have seen many of his already mediocre stats decline - ERA, K/9, GB/FB, etc. The last thing we need is a marginally talented pitcher who is undergoing some mysterious regression to come in here and start giving up a bunch of fly balls and striking nobody out. Granted, he is 26, the same age as Moreland, but I would much rather see the Rangers give Moreland plus PTBNL for a 29 year old Shields, who had an awsome rebound year in 2011 and is a ground out machine with decent strikeout numbers to boot. Moreland should be worth more than Davis, at least to the Rangers.
Just throwing this thought out...if that trade is made, does that open up a potential trade for Garza with one of the current SP's? Maybe Harrison? Not interested in McGehee at all, would rather roll with Moreland.
I suppose the concept that we're shopping Moreland means the FIelder idea is still alive.
McGehee doesn't really fit since that leaes us without a lefty 1B, and I don't see him as an upgrade anyway vs. Moreland. With Davis, we might as well ask for a bag of balls instead. That's all but giving Moreland away.
IF.... IF we signed Fielder, I'd want to keep Moreland (A) To get work as a COF, because it's clear both Nelly and Josh aren't going to give us 162 games each, and (B) it gives Moreland (who's hopefully now healthy) a chance to raise his value with some good production.
These are nothing but speculation... Moreland for Davis, isn't necessarily an upgrade (RIGHT NOW) to the rotation. But Davis was definitely a top prospect coming up through the Rays system, and like our other young pitchers has the potential to be great. What a deal to land Davis does is provide depth. Something you can't ever have too much of, giving the Rangers and JD some flexibility to move someone if need be.
As far as Casey McGee, don't even waste your time worrying about that. I can't see that happening. If they were going down that route, I would rather seem them sign a veteran like Derek Lee who is getting a little older and wouldn't demand to play as often because remember Michael Young gets plenty of at-bats at 1st.
If Moreland is moved, I hope the Rangers wouldn't do that unless they were making a big push to land Fielder....
Moreland for Davis i doubt it.
If the Rangers sign Fielder then i would say Moreland, Olt and a pitching prospect could be moved for a major front line pitcher.
Seattle and Oakland have to look at the AL West and see that they will finish at least 20 games behind both the Rangers and Angels. Seattle has Felix Hernandez and Oakland has Gio Gonzalez. We all know Felix is a stud, but take a second and look at Gio's numbers he would have won over 20 games pitching for the Rangers.
If you're suggesting that Seattle and/or Oakland is going to trade Gio and/or Felix to the Rangers in a package, I'm not sure I'd agree with that... Both teams would be out of their minds to send those two pitchers to a team in the same division. Felix more than Gio.... But that would be a perfect scenario and I would love to see Felix in Ranger RED.
I wouldn't mind seeing Felix in a Ranger uniform either, even though it'd be too big on him and he wouldn't wear his shirt tucked in or his hat straight forward. But I heard he's off-limits.
First off, the Rangers contacted Boras in regards to Mike Gonzalez, not Fielder. The media makes much to do about nothing. 2nd, if what I hear is correct about the Rangers reservation on spending big bucks on a starting pitcher, much less a firstbaseman, due to upcoming contract negotiations already in works, then why would they take on the albatross that is Prince Fielder? While I think they may make a move or two, I do not foresee anything large. I think they will go into this Spring pretty much as is. But then again, this is Jon Daniels we are speaking about.
And keep in mind we will surpass the team record payroll of $105.3M in 2002, in which we did absolutely nothing. I think Jon Daniels learns from his predecessor's mistakes... actually, financial sins.
How is Fielder an "albatross"? He's 27 and one of the best hitters in baseball. The fact that he's good and a free agent doesn't make him an albatross.
The Rangers signed Beltre, who will be 33 in April, to a 6-year, $96 mil contract. Given that much of Beltre's value is on defense, I suspect that his contract will have more "albatross years" than an 8-year contract for Fielder would have. But I think the Beltre contract was still a good move. As would be a contract for Fielder if the Marlins don't drive his price into the stratosphere. Surplus years followed by albatross years is part of the deal.
Homer: Its reported that the Rangers did inquire about Fielder when they spoke with Boras, but it was preliminary... "The Rangers did talk with Fielder's agent, Scott Boras, at the Winter Meetings. There is always a possibility of getting involved with Fielder in the next few weeks. Boras can be quite persuasive." That quote is strait from the Texas Ranger website.
There is no reserve on money, simply because the Rangers have it. They are in the midst of a new TV deal with Fox and have the money to spend. Expect to see them as major players in the Yu Darvish sweepstakes. Although they do appear to put in a bid for Darvish, I wouldn't expect them to spend more that 30 million for negotiating rights.
You want to know why they would take on the "albatross" of Fielder? Well, Im not sure if you saw, but the Angels just signed a pretty good player... Fielder is certainly an upgrade for any team. But you're right about JD being unpredictable.
You need to understand that this is a completely different team than in 2002. And it may be ignorant to say that when the Rangers spend money it does absolutely nothing... I don't think the high payroll that the Angels just created is going to be a bad thing for them.
If we are trading Moreland it better be for James Shields if they are thinking of signing Fielder. We dont need an average starter we got plenty of those. We dont need Fielder either as I think Moreland will put servicable numbers at 1B. We need a #1 or #2 starter either pay big money for Darvish. Or give up the farm for Shields or Price. Martin Perez, Scheppers, Engel Beltre and Feldman if they insist for Moreland...well send him too. There are servicable 1st baseman left in Pena and Lee if we dont want to spend the big money on Fielder.Garza and Gonzalez would be in the second tier and would not include Perez for those 2.
I'm incredibly hesitant to move Perez, but would do so for Price if he became available. And who knows? The Rays make unexpected moves a lot.
Shields is not on that level for me. At all. I rank him below Gio Gonzalez and even Garza, who I'm not that high on to begin with. 5 years from now we will look at 2011 as the career year for Shields.
MLB 2k11 trade finder landed me either A)jed lowrie B)kendrys morales...if we land fielder id take either
Buck - The Rangers big TV deal doesn't start reaping that income until 2015, FYI.
I do think we are "sand bagging" on the Darvish issue via the media. I think we will be players, thus preserving the top 5 prospects that we so highly covet, while getting a TORP of the futurefor 5/$60M or so.
