What is your opinion of the A.J. Pierzynski signing?
MJH on accountability
In these forums over the last week I have seen it suggested that we trade Jurickson Profar for Gio Gonzalez. And I have seen it suggested that we trade Elvis Andrus for Gio Gonzalez.
Now, I would trade either for the right starting pitcher. And a year from now, if Profar is developing on schedule, I would be all for actively shopping Elvis for a TORP while he still has 2-years of remaining arb.
What I don't get is the love for Gio Gonzalez.
Don't get me wrong- he's a nice player. A 26-yr-old established #3 SP is a valuable piece. But we're talking about a guy who is a 3-3.5 WAR pitcher- less than what Elvis put up this year. We're talking ab out a guy with a career ERA of 4-ish in a friendly ballpark, and a career FIP over 4. We're talking about a guy who issues lots of flyballs, and might get hammered in RBiA. We're talking about a guy with a career BB/9 of 4.44. That's really poor (of course, he does offset that with a really nice 8.59 K/9, but still).
Soon enough, this year or next, the time to trade one of those SSs will come. But the return should be better than Gio Gonzalez. We should be looking for a true TORP.
I agree. Don't blow your wad on Gio although he'd be nice. Elvis and Profar shouldn't be moved unless it's for a true TORP. I especially agree on the flyball point, which also scares me about Nathan incidentally. Isn't he a fly ball guy too?
If (when) Andrus goes, it will be in a couple years when Profar is ready. And even then, I would bet money that we don't use him as the centerpiece to bring in one really good player. I bet we trade him for a relief pitcher and a PTBNL or something like that.
Why will we need to trade Profar in a couple of years? Kinsler's a FA after '12 and we have a team option on him for '13 at which point he'll be 31 and starting to decline.. Isn't one of the reasons you develop prospects is so they can replace impending FA's if they get too expensive for you? Profar could be a four or five-tool guy like Kinsler is. Profar-Andrus would be an amazing DP duo.
I'm not going to suggest that we should dump Elvis or Ian just because Profar becomes available. But right now, I wouldn't trade any of them for Gio. Like Scooby said, Gio's a good pitcher. But we already have good pitchers. Lots of them. We don't have any (proven) aces, though. Gio has probably around the same potential to be an ace as a couple of our guys, but not being one right now, I see no reason to trade core players, or likely future core players, for yet another good-but-not-great pitcher.
